How much wacky unrealistic shit can you get away with in a novel if you play it right?
I want to write a novel that rigidly follows The Hero's Journey and takes place in a realistic representation of the modern world, yet I also want the characters to resemble fantasy archetypes as much as possible within the bounds of (pseudo-)reality.
thats called low fantasy, Lovecraft was a low fantasy genius, in basically writte fantastic situations on a realistic base, just don't fall on the "explanantions meme" you don't have to explain the fantasy to make it looking realistic, thats reatarded, fantasy has no logic or explanantion

Nah, the thing is, I want to stick to High Fantasy tropes without there being any actual fantasy whatsoever. Not low fantasy, not anything. The world is completely mundane. It can be unrealistic, but no fantastically so.
Do you kind of get what I'm saying? There's still a quest after something etc, except it's in the modern world and without any magic or whatever.
