Which is the best line in the book.

Two black guys are sitting with them at the table. Both sport faded jeans, T-shirts, and leather jackets. One has reflector sunglasses on, the other has a shaved head. Both are glaring at me. I stick out my hand at a crooked angle, trying to mimic a rapper. “Hey,” I say. “I’m fresh. The freshest, y’know… like, uh, def… the deffest.” I take a sip of champagne. “You know… def.”

To prove this I spot a black guy with dreadlocks and I walk up to him and exclaim “Rasta Man!” and hold out my hand, anticipating a high-five. But the nigger just stands there.

“I mean”—I cough—“Mon,” and then, with less enthusiasm, “We be, uh, jamming..”

HA!

I loved how he tried so hard to debase authentic Jews (the scene where he was refused a cheeseburger in the kosher deli) and to sell himself to authentic black people (the scene you described) and was rebuffed. I like that there were pockets of resistance to American consumerism/capitalism.

The book was, to me, a relatively nuanced allegory. I very much enjoyed it.

Nobody has mentioned the expected role of the male in society?

Bateman is specifically living a life of what he thinks he's supposed to be, the main thing being the "ideal man". He's successful, rich, primarily associates with other men socially, has an expensive and attractive girlfriend, has an attractive mistress who is dating a friend of his (securing the sharks in the water role on top of the virile male does not need monogamy role), buys sex, plays a detached and narcissistic role in the sexual act, rejects homosexual advances, etc etc

I know this is a fucking trigger phrase here but American Psycho is, on one level, a demonstrative critique of the male gender role.
