Work for a consultancy in renewables, so work varies hugely
Physics was okay, I had a passing interest in it and everything else was boring to me so did it at uni. Loved my MSc.
Would consider switching to academia in a few years time, don't find my work intellectually stimulating or challenging. Don't wanna be a poor peasant though.

I love what I am studying (will graduate in 2019). It is very technically intensive, intellectually enriching and gives me a lot of hope for the future. It is impossible for me to tell what I will be even doing in 5 years and in the mean time I can have some good clean fun reading dense books.

kek, I'm stealing this

Where at in IN? I just moved from Indianapolis (born there) to Seattle about a year ago. I made enough out here on minimum wage that I was able to start studying engineering.

midwest now living on the west coast

Chemistry / Materials engineering

im a grad student so i guess I TA and do research

about $29000 / annum

I synthesize many different kinds of electrolytes to be used in Lithium, Sodium, Magnesium, and sometimes even calcium batteries. After I perform a synthesis (which could take weeks) I test the electrolytes to see if they actually work. I measure their efficiency, conductive properties, etc. I fabricate cells and study the properties of these electrolytes against different cathode materials including Molybdenum sulfide and sulfur, which I also synthesize. My ultimate goal is to make multivalent ion batteries a commerical reality. Am I close? dont even ask me. its a dream shared by the electrochemical engineering community and it will be a long time before these batteries are actually scalable to be put anywhere near you. yes, the batteries work, but only for a limited number of charge/discharge cycles.

I was the exact opposite of what you described. I went to grad school mostly because there is no money in earning a BSc chemistry degree and I sorta liked research. Now I absolutely love what I specialize in and it even makes me forget about the dwindling job opportunities for PhDs...sometimes.

>would I switch to something else [if i could go back 6 years]?
I may have done chemical engineering. i dont know. long story short, I wouldnt be in grad school if I thought I could make a good living with my BSc degree.

overall I would say it turned out much better than expected. I have more money than Ive ever had before and I get to do research on fucking awesome stuff. I get to see a completely new place, meet new friends, experience completely new things all around. Major downside is there is an extreme amount of pressure to produce results and until you pass your qualifying exams you are scared you will be kicked out. its actually incredible how much of a journey its been. very happy.

I'm scared man. What do you plan on doing afterwards? What chem specializations do you think show promise in the future?

use your supposedly smart brain and figure that one out

Im a rare case in that I work in both an engineering and a chemistry lab with no formal engineering training as of yet. from mock job searches I have done for my field specifically that is highly desired. I could get a position as a materials scientist, materials engineer, or materials chemist. they are all basically the same thing. its just a title. it seems like it pays well relative to the other chemistry disciplines.

chem specializations that show promise:
Materials
Polymer chemistry / engineering (same thing basically)
Biochemistry
Analytical*
Physical**

Specializations to stay far away from and never return to:
Organic
computational (unless you know you are not going to do chemistry after school)
Analytical*
Physical**

* analytical desired because theres a lot of jobs. stay away because it takes a special kind of person to do that work without shooting themselves in the head out of boredom.

** Physical in both categories because theory is useless. Do something applied and you could end up being qualified for chemE PhD positions.

materials has been pretty reliable no matter what you do. particularly materials applied to biochemical systems and pharmaceuticals. that field is a cash cow on the job market right now.

avoid the organic glut. I dont care how bad you want to make drugs like walter white. organic labs are known for working their students fingers to the bone. there are a lot of jobs, but there are also a lot of people who are thinking exactly like you. everyone wants to do organic for some reason. to avoid math and just play with electron pushing all day(?)

final note: these are current trends. whatever you do, I HIGHLY recommend finding something you really think you would enjoy first, then doing mock job searches as if you have completed your degree in that field. do you have good work opportunities? do you have a salary that you are content with? how do other people on the internet feel about the profession?

sounds pretty real to me, easily done as well, depending on the country

I don't know, I like programming but I can already tell I'd hate doing it for a job, at least in corporations such as this one. Really thinking about going back to study physics or something. This specialist degree is a waste of money anyways, but I need to be a student to keep this job so I guess I'll just stick with it for another year and a half.
Was kinda sad I didn't go study EE but oh well

life's tough, my 2 friends don't have jobs either and they don't bother looking for one until they finish their 'specialist' degree. I don't blame them though, we all keep getting fed the same shit about having to go to college and getting degrees so we can get jobs easily later, as if they just fall from the sky

Not to mention the nepotism happening in the open and bs like getting robbed from A grade just because the professor is buthurt that day about something.

I recon social networks (including Veeky Forums) and work on a military AI. I input data into a big knowledge base used by the military AI and work on the algorithms.
Sometimes depending on the AI's output I shitpost and then feed the results back into the machine monster alongside my own conclusions.

I'm between a beta tester and a developer, it's just easier to do the information gathering by myself. It leads to better conclusions. I have a good team too. Properly doing the social media recon stuff gives me more money than just simply working on the algorithms. It took me some time and effort to get the job though.

>>Do you even like what you studied? Would you switch to something else?
Yes.
Not really. Maybe I should have done something other than security engineering for my second masters.
I occasionally do some other stuff dealing with hw/sw security and deploy-ability of technology in certain environments. I want to do this type of shit more often, but AI is fun too.

Also you said you have no formal experience in engineering so no bachelors? Would I be less desirable to employers if I don't have an undergraduate degree in engineering?

Is computational really bad? I was thinking of minoring in cs because it seems like a useful skill to have.

By materials applied to biochemical systems does that include synthetic biology?

Finally if you have time, could you tell me what sort of skills or experiences you are gaining that you feel would be valuable to an employer?

When you get to the PhD level only about 25% or less of the jobs ask what you did for your undergraduate degree. Graduate school teaches you a skill set. Even though I am doing a chemistry PhD I could be a "materials engineer" as long as the job covers my skillset. All it is is a name. That said, some of the jobs I have looked at that I would like to do ask for a Bachelor in engineering. On the inside I am kind of regretful that I dont have an engineering degree because Im doing that work now anyway and engineers have more opportunities to live in cities (which I really want to do when Im finished with school).

there's nothing wrong with minoring in CS. I would even suggest majoring in it. It is by far the most booming field currently. I know many people in CS and software engineering that are paid VERY well for having only a bachelors degree. there are jobs everywhere for CS people. computational chemistry is bad because there are next to zero computational chemistry jobs. even the comp labs here are more coding and programming centered than chemistry. I hear many computational chemists go on to be data analysts or something which is $$$. but you most likely will not be a chemist ever again if you go that route.

it depends on the project. if you really want a good reading of the market, go on a job hunt right now. before you go to grad school is the time to do this obsessively. read the job market and compare it to the work done by different labs at universities you want to go to. this will help you develop a sort of bullshit detector for labs that arent going to do anything for your career outside of academia, and something that will get you a job in industry. so to answer your question frankly; sometimes.

Would you mind saying which Uni you study at? I too study Biomed with Honours and would be v interesting to see if we're at the same place

it's a tough balance; fucking and fapping

3 part answer:

Instrumentation. Learn to be comfortable with as many machines relevant to your work as possible. these can also be checked off a list from job postings.

doing an applied project in research is important as well. that is: work that could be easily translated or is directly relevant to industrial application. get out of the ivory tower of academia if you dont plan on staying there. you need to learn how industry works before you get there. it can be challenging to sell yourself to an employer as a good employee when you have been a student for 8 - 10 years.

lastly, find a professor with connections to industry who can find you jobs when you are close to graduating. find a professor who encourages you to do internships over the summer. some dont. they are self serving and should be avoided.

Thank you so much user. wish you the best

>Where you are from
A third world shithole
>Your major
A mix of engineering with CS
>Do you have a job
Yes
>How much do you earn
Very little, but I only work 4 hours a day.
>What do you do
I'm a developer at a tiny company (mostly web and mobile) and working on my MSc thesis in robotics.
>Do you even like what you studied? Would you switch to something else?
Yeah I really enjoy it. Can't really think of something else that I would like more but also be good at.

Administration at university
>How much do you earn
11k a year
>What do you do
Make things work out as they should in administration
>Do you even like what you studied? Would you switch to something else?
Yes i like what i studied, however i would have enjoyed to study programming languages

>Where you are from
Ireland
>Your major
Pharmaceutical Chemistry
>Do you have a job
No, I'm at college to not have to work.
>How much do you earn
12k a year including rent paid by parents.
>What do you do
Take amphetamines and opiates and read a lot. A LOT.
>Do you even like what you studied?
Many people told me as a teenager that I had a remarkable gift for the English language and I feel sometimes like I abandoned a true and fate-ordained vocation by not pursuing a career as a writer of literature and poetry. I feel that weakness of character and desire for comfort and security caused me to miss the developmental moment that would have allowed me to shatter every expectation of myself and become greater than a man.
Would you switch to something else?
Then I solve a saucy mechanism and nail some spectra to get that dopamine hit and it's all good.

>Where you are from
New Jersey

>Your major
Ecology

>Do you have a job
Nope, currently desperately looking for part time work in my college town to pay rent.

>How much do you earn
0

>What do you do
panic daily about my future and career

>Do you even like what you studied? Would you switch to something else?
Yeah I fucking love it. I wish I knew about the major before I was halfway done with college, otherwise I might actually have had a lab or job by now.

Kill yourself my man you don't know what you're talking about

To anyone reading, do Orgo if you love it.

>Where from?
Depends on what you mean.

>Major
Mathematics and Computer Science.
Wish I could officially major in Physics (as a third) as well.

>Job?
nop. Unless you count being a student.

>Earnings?
A negative amount.

>What do you do?
Quite a lot. Eat occasionally. Read CVE. Listen to loud music during ridiculous times at night while reading Arxiv. Take apart old electronics to harvest breadboarding components. Listen to HAM-ies. Read useless, semi-outdated material on phreaking. Get mad at Arch for being an asshole. Spend ridiculous amounts of time on public transportation. Do coursework. Daydream about one day having my own lab to conduct my own research instead of having to be a yes monkey for old, cranky men.

>Like? Switch?
I do like what I'm studying. If something happened and for some reason I couldn't do Computer Science, I would definitely go for a program in Physics and Mathematics.

I love weather and all, but it is getting stale. swiching to be an engineer, double major in Mechatronics and Robotics and Coputer Engineering
>I'm just curious about how it turned out for you guys
Turned out well, but just lucky. Transitioning to engineering to get more skills and do more cool things... And maybe get a raise
