where do gen y, millenials and z start and finish? Not that relevant to lit but anyway
Where do gen y, millenials and z start and finish? Not that relevant to lit but anyway
they don't. those categories are imaginary and can't be tied to any specific date.
Sort of true but also misses the point.
The categories aren't imaginary, only arbitrary. They aren't intended to refer to dates but rather to the unique influences of media under which these generations grew up. So in fact they can be tied to dates but the endpoints are debatable.
Anyone whose first search engine was google is a millennial. What the fuck is generation z?
They came after millennials.
Millennials grew up in this weird interregnum period when the internet was just getting started but hadn't yet achieved its full form. Most Millennials probably have memories of a childhood without internet, and then only dial-up. They probably remember having a house phone and having to specifically ask for who you wanted to talk to when you called someone's house.
Generation z meanwhile grew up with smart phones, social media, the whole shebang. The pleb perception of this is that there's only an incremental difference between the two, but it really doesn't take much strength of mind to imagine the impact of such things from a young age in comparison to a millennial childhood.
Millennials had the innocent internet, they had to be introduced to it in school with google. Generation Z had digital autonomy from like age 4.
Well I was born in 97 and I had dial-up for my childhood, browsed newgrounds, ebaumsworld etc. I didn't have a smart phone until I was 14 or so. While I was still young when web 2.0 started and gained significance I still remember the internet before that period. Am I Gen Z?
you're a fucking idiot. get off Veeky Forums
Did I trigger you, my friend?
You're generation reddit
Never browsed it. I actually first started lurking on Veeky Forums when I was 14 as well, 2011 newfag here.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD
Yeah. You're a "digital native." I didn't have cellphone until I was 16. This is the exact one I had, it was actually state of the art back then and my friends were envious.
I actually had that exact model as well when I was 12 or so.
>tfw I had a Crzr at 16 and it was cool as fuck
Tbh I didn't look closely enough at the picture, it was actually this one. I feel like my dad, he was trying to show me which calculator he used in college and he googled a million of them before he was sure which one it was.
>I didn't have a smart phone until I was 14 or so.
gen x: 1975-1980
millennials / gen y: 1985-1992
gen z: 1995-2001
gen gay: 2002-now
-- gen derfluid tranny queers: 2011-now
I'm born in 1993 so according to you I don't fit in any of the generations, feelsgoodman
The internet is far from having achieved "its full form" yet.+
fuck off
there is a transition phase between each generation which is why there are gaps between one and the next. you're either a young millennial or an old gen z cunt.
i think i should shorten or eliminate gen z because in truth gen gay started when current college students were born, so ~1998. probably earlier. maybe gen z is gen gay, and now old gen gay is gen derqueers.
Wait i'm not following you, so am I gay or am I ok? I grew up with dial-up internet and newgrounds
to reddit, and don't come back.
my first search engine was gopher. what does that make me?
> an old fart
what came before gen x? or don't the neanderthals count in your scheme?
>tfw 82
What the fuck is your problem?
Judging by the posts I see on Veeky Forums, a millenial is everyone younger than you whom you don't like.
There is no real classification since those categories are mindsets, which in turn are dependant on the family they are raised in.
>I inherited my dads lego and listened to old cassetes to help me sleep. I remember watching movies which had commercials for the brand new DVD disk before the actual movie started. All I knew about computers was old ass CD-ROM games, like pic related or Warcraft. My first phone was a Nokia 6310.
Am I a millenial?
>Who else /should-be-gen-z-digital-native-but-grew-up-in-Luddite-family-so-didn't-get-to-use-the-Internet-and-social-media-till-they-were-much-older-so-now-they're-alienated-from-technology-and-don't-know-how-to-use-it-so-are-basically-millennials/ here
Feels bad man. All my friends were using msn and talking to people online, so they all have these like online social skills that you need to have been using the Internet from a young age to have
As a professional sociologist I always ask categorical deviants to kill themselves so as to protect investigation.
When does one species transition to another?
>online social skills
come the fuck on m8
Dude it's real shit.
Messaging comes so naturally to them but I get screaming terrors if I have to talk to someone over text. And I know it's specifically a lack of online social skills because I don't have this problem face to face with people. I'm generally pretty confident or at least capable. But trying to work out meaning through like messenger or something, or when someone's joking if I don't have concrete interpersonal cues, kills me man.
If it's not this, then why is it so easy for them and difficult for me?
You don't imagine, or maybe are just incapable of perceiving, the power facebook has on at least european countries. It's like it monopolised gossip. Anyone who doesn't engage frequently in facebook gossip is automatically a [sociotechnological] dissociated autist
Not really though. No one's going to immediately disregard you for not having a Facebook.
It's just that if you're already a dumb autist, not having a Facebook just builds on that.
t. antisocial autist who still uses facebook for minimum friendship maintenance inbetween actually meeting them
kek
>Should be digital native
Veeky Forums has an age limit
Shut the fuck up gramps. Digital native just means being born like post-'96.
Digital native just means being born like post-'96.
That's fucking bullshit. I'm just above legal (98) and not me nor any of my friends are so-called digital natives
a reminder that the most popular gen z teen subcultures involve a) being a neo-nazi b) being transgender c) jerking off to cartoon animals d) 'dank memes'
'Millennial' is a pejorative adopted by baby boomers to describe the age old phenomenon of 'KIDS THESE DAYS' and can be applied to basically anyone born between 1980 and 2016. Completely meaningless term from a demographic perspective. Gen Y cuts off around the mid 90s IIRC.
My personal understanding is that anyone who was not old enough to remember what they were doing when on December 31st, 1999 is a member of gen Z. The baby boom ended in 1965 so split the period between 1965 and 1995 or so into two equally sized chunks, the earlier one is gen X and the later one is gen Y.
also, "drops"
>Implying the Transgender Furry Neonazis aren't going to lead us into a golden age of transhumanism
>remember what they were doing when on December 31st, 1999
i was in my room playing tony hawk's pro skater with my cousin.
I'm '98 too and I'd consider most of my friends to be digital natives. On the cusp but still.
Dude I don't remember what I was doing December 31st last year. How do you remember shit like that?
