But if you are deliberately trying to be 'authentic' you reify authenticity, destroying it. Upper middle 'creative'/media classes (a race in themselves) realize their life is boring and fake, so they look to an idealized 'authentic' other, in the process instrumentalizing this other and turning it into a reflection of their own neuroses. As a result the world ends up more boring and fake than before.

Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye is great. Albert Murray's Train Whistle Guitar is phenomenal if you've ever wondered what Joycean word play would look like in the context of Alabama. My Name is Red by Orhan Pamuk is an ingenious postmodern whodunit set in 16th century Istanbul and featuring a cast of nutty miniaturists. I've never read any Murakami but Kafka On the Shore is pretty well received if you wanted to start with him.

I live in urban Texas. None of us really have a problem with rural areas being conservative. You should come hang out in one of the cities sometime, they're all pretty great.
