legit bums me out that I'm the only person I know that reads, let alone writes.

>me on the right

Same.

Even my smart colleagues read crap.

>30s people
>Whitman
>Ginsberg

I remember going through a long conversation with an intelligent and successful stage actress and eventually she said she doesn't know who Joyce is.

I don't even blame her, the bar out there is low, real fucking low

The only legit literary person I know is a youth friend of my dad, the guy writes poetry but he sucks desu, but at least he knows the canon and had a really crazy fucked up life, tons of fun stories

>tfw the closest you'll come to having a literary squad is a room mate who read the book thief

Why do women have such shit taste?

I would be in your guys squad desu. Just go easy on me cause I am late to the party in terms of literature and still a dilettante

>that ugly-ass verlaine dumping sweet boijuice in rimbaud's boipucci
why even live

i can't imagine participating in a mutual admiration society

and yet i can imagine participating in an anonymous mutual 'self-contempt' society like this entire website

yeah i run into this problem a lot. i work in a factory, bottom level. the other bottom level people, even the smartest ones, are savages. then there are the technicians and maintenance guys. they are 1000x smarter and more pleasant to deal with, but they use that intelligence to shoot guns and work on cars in their free time. my smartest family member, my cousin, used to dominate me socially and hold me to a higher standard, but then he stayed on the computer in grandma's basement and stagnated. my best friend was comparatively smarter than everyone else we had to deal with, we used to talk about reading, but that was before i got in so deep. he just likes lord of the rings because his parents read it to him. gets hurt when i say it's not so special. can't read war and peace because it's boring. couldn't read dubliners or portrait because it was boring. couldn't even finish 3 body problem.
>dark souls though, no problems there

I'm an ESL student surrounded by pseuds who think they're hot shit because they read Orwell and Ayn Rand at 20.

Very few people bothered reading entry-level books like Robinson Crusoe or Gulliver's Travels, dismissing them as "boring, hard, and stupid".

>have a few friends that are into literature
>they're all that type who always talks about reading but rarely actually reads

>have a couple friends from my university who actually read some decent stuff and invited me to a bookclub they were planning on starting
>don't live nearby anymore since I graduated

>the only "lit" scene I know of in my city is populated by 80% fat tumblrwhales (very vocal ones at that) and a few resident betas who cater to their whims, that and steampunk enthusiasts

I've settled for talking with those friends that don't actually read, at least those show some sort of enthusiasm and like to hear what I have to say about books they want to read even though they actually won't.

This kinda sucks man.

>they're all that type who always talks about reading but rarely actually reads

Why do people do this?

They probably dont much else to talk about and are Internet addicts, they are literally me

Their interest in books is genuine, at least it seems so to me, but I think the main reason is that they all have various interests. For some it's videogames, for others movies, etc. Reading, not being their main hobby, is not prioritized when they choose how to allocate their already scarce free time (since most of these people I am talking about have jobs and shit). Also they aren't used to reading regularly, so to them picking up a book is something that requires some effort since they have that inertia to overcome, I also feel that way often so I can't judge.

Because socialising is fun and intelligent people like talking about a range of subjects including books?

O-oh. I'm sorry to hear that.
Heh, good thing l'm not like that.

Fuck off, you sperg faggot.

>you will never be part of the Infrarealists

>you will never buy Joyce a pint

>tfw no literary groupies

Can you imagine how much PUSS the Beat Faggots got?

I am pretty sure Verlaine was on the receiving end.

>mfw no sense of modern community

I wonder what it was like living your life in tight knit communities if likeminded people? Nowadays life is so transient that when you meet someone new, they'll probably end up moving away in a few years

>mfw when everyone else got this k-12, but because my parents are fucking idiots I never stayed at a single school more than 3 years
>mfw too late to develop the social skills everyone else got just from existing

Literal talentless bums
Bolaño is such an overrated hack

I know who Joyce is. Am I Veeky Forums?

phony as fuck. they try to make a remake that people dont care about.

stop being a beta. you can develop social skills whenever you want. go out and talk to people. youl probably sound like a fucking retard the first thousand times but who cares youl never see them again.

>you will never be a member of the Rhymers' Club, produce one or three truly masterful short poems, and die of alcoholism at the age of 24 with vague premonitions that an entirely new kind of art was afoot
>you will never be immortalized in the obscure corner of a poem by your one truly great contemporary, to be drudged up only 80 years later by academics
>you will never be forgotten by the million and celebrated by the few for what might have been

Anyone else have this very specific literary feel?

Only overrated hacks call others overrated hacks

By average person standards yes, you're pratcially Joyce himself.

By patrician standards, not even babby tier

user...

that looks disgusting

>you will NEVER attend the University of Berlin, take in mind-blowing lectures from Hegel, and get shitfaced with Bauer, Engels, Marx, Stirner, &c. and IRL shitpost about philosophy, literature, and revolution in some dive-bar

Who are the babes?

The only thing worst than that is ywn hang out with plato, diogenes and the rest of the qt greek boys on the agora

I have this problem, and I'm female...My friends all read John Green tier crap. Due to my family also really liking literature, I've been exposed to Veeky Forums books from a young age and have read them since I was a young teenager (barring a few forays into YA lit to attempt to connect with friends. A complete waste of time).

pls be in Spain

at least you can discuss literature with your parents. when i was young i thought my mom had great taste in literature but she just reads romance novels and has a stack of unread jane austen novels. my grandmother was patrician, read LOTR to me but she did 12 years ago. i have no one to discuss literature with

>mfw I have a good friend of equally good literary taste, who writes for fun like me, and we collaborate on literary idea making (sometimes on acid).

Additional bonus: my family have shelves and shelves of good books. I hardly ever have to buy classics when I want to read them, because its in some tucked away nook in a bookshelf. However, aside from my parents, I really don't have anyone my own age to talk to about books I'm reading.

m-maybe if i become a good writer, Lana del Rey will be my groupie.

>user, she's engaged
;_; fuck off

>tfw literary squad
>tfw the Henry Miller to her Anais Nïn

What would one have to do to marry you?

Reading Jane Austen when I was younger (12-ish) put me off marriage a bit desu. All the adult relationships outside of the heroines in them are severely dysfunctional.

>tfw intellectual class is dead

My uni squad is an Italian dude specializing in Dante, poetics, and space, and a Hegelian Marxist who is the most well read person I've ever met. Another is a nice man studying Husserl and Lispector. I am a virile, young man with wonderful companions and I pity you for not having what I have. This is what you get for falling for the STEM meme and not studying what you truly love.

I will be your night in shining amore, give this star a crossing shoot

No wonder all you autists are stuck being the faggot that everyone hates in community college philosophy class lmao

>tfw small tribe of manly literate homofriends
>tfw one of us got a few of his paintings exhibited last week
>tfw everything is gin, Fassbinder movies, haussmannian interiors and improvising phony organ preludes
>tfw healthy competition and comradery

tfw the literary squad is only accessible through a world wide web.

literally 0 of my friends read. I even have a couple that study eng lit but fail to move beyond GRRM and cringy YA shit.

Damn. You will never feature to in that famous sketch of stirner

Or hang out with Epicurus in his garden in sweet ataraxia

>ynw be such a generation

These literary squads you are talking about. Are not places where people will talk about books. They are groups where people share their idea's and debate them. You will never be part of a group because you think you are an erodite who is better then his fellowman.

>tfw you'll never be the humble writer in a group of various artists

I just want to be the "go-to Literature" guy that the painter, musician, and photographer turn to. And in turn, I want sculpture friends and ballet lovers. I want us all to get drunk in seedy bars, discussing money.

>tfw your life will never be La Vie de Bohème

>no literary squad
>make a fresh pot of coffee
>put on a jazz record
>smoke a cigarette while i read Veeky Forums
>get into some cheeky banter
>feel like i have a literary squad

>eng lit

>GRRM

How does this even happen?

it is something I think I want but would probably hate if I found one.

english lit is one of those degrees that people just pick if they can't decide. Heck, i guess that describes most people who pick any degree in general. Few actually have much interest in their chosen subject.

Why don´t you all just make a mumble or something?

yep, this. my friends in english lit can discuss course material with a good degree of interest and insight but you ask about what theyre reading for fun and they just look confused. english lit is strictly school for a lot of people.

That'd be one of my biggest wishes.
My only friend that likes reading doesn´t even read that much. He´s obssesed with Camus because muh "life is meaningful but i don´t care because i´m too cool", have only read the Plague and just romanticizes his image. I didn´t even like him that much before getting into literature.

My other friend only finds books useful when they have "mindblowing" but eventually useless facts or just weird or surprising in some way.

My other friends just don´t read at all outside the summaries of books they had to read in high school.

I enjoy hanging out with them a lot, don´t get me wrong, but i would want someone to have a meaningful discussion of literature. And that is hard to get here. I blame the illiterate culture of this country.

This is true enough. It would never live up to expectation, and you'd just drop out when you found out everyone in it was a shitty person.

Just watch Rent and get over yourself

>tfw you will never try out automatic writing with your wife

I remember reading "the authorities examined Verlaine and found evidence of homosexual practice" somewhere -maybe the introduction of the bilingual complete Rimbaud- and thinking, how the fuck could they tell?

He had "Propriété de Rimbaud" tattooed on his ass

i can't remember what that test is called but i think it's the one that got disproven when some doctors went overboard on it during the US Satanic Panic in the 80s-90s. it's sometimes an indicator, and i think there's other evidence for rimbaud being a top i can't recall now either.

>tfw friend with masters in English lit moved to the opposite coast

>tfw no sculptor friends
>tfw only photography friends are girls taking shitty black and white pictures of flowers in rain
At least I have a conductor friend

If Joyce isn't a patrician standard, then what is?
>inb4 Gass

You didn't understand what he wrote at all. Try again

Wew that's a lot of projection there lad.

Didn't read who he replied to. No need to be a cunt about it though

Don't some African States use in intrusive anal probing to determine homosexuality? Complete bullshit of course

>Have just one friend that reads
>Only reads fantasy and YA

Reeeeeeee
I'm trying to bring him slowly into the Veeky Forums world
