My grandad sent me a challenge maths question from an engineering magazine

Pick a 3 digit number, reverse the digits to get a new number. Subtract the smaller of these two numbers to get a new number X. Reverse the digits of X to get a new number Y. No matter how you start X + Y is always the same number, why?

Not too tough and kinda fun

Let's say theoretically our number is 485. We reverse the digits which gives us 584. We subtract the smaller which gives us X = 99. We reverse 99 to get Y = 99.

Our question is essentially just this; why do we get 99 for X and Y? You have 1 hour, Veeky Forums.

X is always 99 because 584 - 485 is always 99

When you get X = 99 you're supposed to write it as 099, I also forgot to mention that obviously the first and last digit can't be the same

We get X+Y=198 instead of 1089 because, in the notes, it is implicitly assumed that X has 3 digits when in this case has only two. So the number Y chosen is 990 instead of the correct 99.
