First time ever using Latex last semester and it is so goddamn miserable to write a simple paper with it compared to Microsoft Word. Our professor only accepted Latex and we didn't even use equations in the lab reports it was just to write about our electronics projects.

I've got a course that gives bonus points to assignment typed in latex. Where's a good place I can learn it from scratch?

Google and just do all your shit in [math]\TeX[/math]

The first result on youtube will give you a nice tutorial if you search for "LaTeX tutorial" covers all the basic equations and their commands. Everything else you can just google and the first result should be from someone else asking on tex.stackexchange with the same question and a dozen people giving answers. Also there are plenty of LaTeX command reference sheets you can download and then search.

Could Veeky Forums support tikz?

i know
[math]$n_0000000000000000000000^(-1)$[/math]

Can I ask this here? What tex packages should I install if I want to use LyX? I installed 'texlive-basic', 'texlive-generic-recommended', 'texlive-latex-recommended', and 'texlive-plain-extra', but still I get loads of error messages when I work with downloaded template files. I don't want to install those huge complete 16gb tex packages.

If you're getting errors can't you read them and see what you're missing?
I'd just install the complete package and avoid the headache desu.

Veeky Forums hasn't had support for matrices until quite recently; I've seen some incredibly tedious workarounds using \rlap's and \strut's.

Hacking the matrix environment to make graphs is trivial by comparison.

[eqn]\begin{matrix}
& & \ast & & \\
& \swarrow & \Downarrow & \searrow & \\
A & \gets & A\times B & \to & B
\end{matrix}
[/eqn]

Tikz can do way more than that though.

\begin{matrix} & & \ast & & \\ & \swarrow & \Downarrow & \searrow & \\ A & \gets & A\times B & \to & B \end{matrix}

But TikZ relies on some underlying driver like Postscript oir PDF. If there was some kind of SVG or even HTML/CSS driver you could render it online.

IS there any youtube dude who teaches this. Not the mainstream but in-dept. I really don't have time for self teaching myself.

Pure math grad here. I graduated with a shit GPA, I never became proficient in any programming language of any kind, and would you like fries with that.

My self-deprecation comes with a point: I DO punch up [math] \LaTeX [/math] documents on a regular basis, and in my experience it is really really fucking easy to figure things out on your own initiative once you actually want to write something. [math] \LaTeX [/math] solutions are commonly bundled with autistic, if imperfect and sometimes dated, help files, and then of course there's always the internet. 99% of the time, if you have a difficulty, you can search an answer, bash something together and keep going within the next 1-20 minutes depending on how elaborate the issue is.

If you know what file extensions are and how to zip and unzip folders and browse the internet and all that basic use-a-computer shit, then you can figure out [math] \LaTeX [/math]. There's really no excuse if it's something you actually want to do. Basically, if I can figure it out on my own, then you can too.

I find that setting yourself a project of some kind is great because it forces you to get the answers you need.

Just cargo cult it with some templates, the things you use regularly you'll remember how to do.
That's assuming you just want to be able to type up math and write a homework or simple document.

If you actually want to understand all the typesetting nitty gritty it'd be harder but that's a waste of time imo.
