Because education systems in most countries got ultraneoliberal in the last 10-20 years. Leaving forever the humanistic/classical approach to literature.

YA/genre fiction is as toxic to the young brain as porn. One of the differences being reading is socially aceptable while masturbating/playing vidya 4 hours everyday day is not

YA can harbor people into literature as much as it contains them to one genre, if not more. this 'cancerous' trend of watering people down with John Green affects only the people who see it as an issue and the people who will go about pursuing low brow things in other mediums of art/entertainment. stop blaming authors who create things you don't like as part of an issue, for instance JKR. if you don't think she had something going for her in her work you are the same person who thinks starting with the Greeks is the only way to understand any and all prose.

Women and young people are the main audience for harry potter and their rating scale is either 4/5 it was bad-ok and 5/5 it was good. Males use the scale correctly more.
