The only thing that should excite you that is calculus related is when Wildberger invents calculus without reals. How hard would it have been to do the C/D explanation? The fact that Ancient Egyptians used simple methods to discover a constant ration existed between the two using nothing more than rope and sticks.

But either way, fairly well done. This should be how it's taught in high schools anways. My Math teacher spent time going over these concepts back then instead of just reiterating formulas to memorize.

But that's literally what pi is defined as: the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. When he says "That's just what pi is," it sounds pretty hand-wavey, but that's really as fundamental as it gets.

You guys realize that these are introductory videos right? If you're already familiar with the concepts, maybe you can gain some insight by seeing the animations, but these "essence of" series are meant for brainlets like me who never actually got to learn this stuff, or had such a poor quality introduction in school that the math is essentially useless.

these videos are meant to offer a different and perhaps unique perspective to look at the subject from, so that you might gain some deeper knowledge and intuition about it

I wondered the same thing the first time I took analysis. The problem is that the set of rationals is not complete. You can take a limit of rational numbers and end up with an irrational. So you can't take arbitrary limits safely, and analysis doesn't even get off the ground.

Definitely. Regardless he is one of, if not, the best presenters of mathematics on youtube.

That said this series is definitely dumbed down compared to his other videos.

I get that. But he should have took a moment to talk about the history. It wouldn't have taken much, and he could have led off with it before getting into the "heavier" material. I think it's neat that the most basic tools, rope and stakes, were used to determine close approximations of pi back in the times of Ancient Egypt, or maybe before.

To the contrary, I think most people who watch the video didn't really get it.

Try measuring the circumference of a circle with just a straight edge and compass. You will find "calculus" there before you try finding the area.

Faggot, what he's saying makes perfect sense. To see change, you have to see at least a period of evolution of the *insert here what you're observing*. In an instant, nothing happens. There are better ways to say what a derivative is, and maybe it's not a very simple concept after all.
