I don't get this whole question. IF you define gender as your sexual identity beyond your biological sex then it's completely subjective so how is this even a scientific question? If you define it as your biological sex then there's nothing to talk about either.

There is evidence that the brain is gendered and there is an area which creates the feeling of belonging to your biological sex. Neurologically you can have conflicting gender to sex or have an agendered sensation about your sex. Basically the brain creates the gender identity.

As for biological sex there is XY, XX, XXY genders so there are at least 3 sexes if you consider a unique chromosomal set a sex.
