Why does Veeky Forums hate contemporary lit?

Why does Veeky Forums automatically write off "new" books, best sellers or contemporary literature? There has to be some really good stuff coming out that i'm missing.

A lot of contemporary lit is cliched navel-gazing filled with bromides to make those living in bicoastal cities think they're intellectuals. It is the con-man of literature. It offers nothing, but seems to.

Because best sellers are like normie top 40 music. If you like it, good for you. Chances are, it is not anything groundbreaking

Brief History is decent. Could have been great if it wasn't so bloated.

The prose is just dull, dull, dull. There is nothing wondrous about the language used by any contemporary writer I know of. I'd rather reread one of Faulkner's masterpieces than slog through some minimalist tome that never elevates itself beyond what's simply necessary to propel itself into the next scene. Language should be rapturous - that seamless weaving of simile, metaphor, vocabulary, insight...not the garbage peddled by people like Jonathan Franzen that reads like its own Sparknotes summary.

I think this is what you're looking for.

It ain't brief. The patois does get tedious, although it seems to be a little easier to follow after a few hundred pages.

This is one of the best books I've read, and I just picked it up last year. Would suggest.

Because Veeky Forums is a bunch of pseudo-intellectuals who won't sat they like a book unless it has an established critical reputation and it will make them look smart to list it as their favorite. Claiming to love a book written last year that doesn't have a high reputation would expose them to the risk of having to actually explain what made it good. Much better to say that Don Quixote is your favorite book and if someone criticizes it you can just go

I'm not a regular around here, so I don't know the inside jokes or possible hivemind the board has. In my case, I find it hard to keep up with contemporary books, especially fiction; for me it's just easier to work on my backlog, which is mostly "well known classics" or essential reading (the wiki page is very good).

I try to read at least one contemporary work each month, but it's reserved to non fiction/essay/critiques.

Characterization of most of these books aren't even able to surpass some of the characters in a short story of Chekhov. They think they cam get over this either with trite experimentalism or faux poetic prose, but ultimately there is a lack of a anything that you can humanly grab on to.

In book form he feels so bloated and overwrought. Bela Tarr's version is more visceral.

I think our culture is too self-absorbed and narcissistic to produce good writers. The characters that don't represent the author are always so inhumane, and the themes so selfish and naive. The people smart enough to actually produce something worth reading are always so far up their own ass with self-indulgent page counts, ostentatious language and unnecessary structure. Either that or they're just plain boring people writing boring fiction.

The novel-writing community is also completely infected by this idea of the novel as a zeitgeist-setting cultural rosetta stone, thanks to the lies peddled by academics trying to justify or otherwise salvage the dignity of their discipline that's become a diploma mill in recent days. This concept of ambition also satisfies the ego of the modern writer in our social media culture.

What I don't understand is, why hasn't a good writer emerged in this age of huge populations and universal literacy? Why have I rolled my eyes at everything I've read in the past 30 years?

See As soon as I read that post I thought of this book. I don't think he makes it past the first page before he mentions global warming. He has good lyrical instincts! I'll give him that. But this books reads like the wet dream of a New York Times editorial writer.

Hating on contemporary novels is just one more way for the pseuds on here to assert their intellectual superiority.

Of course there are great novels being published. Anyone who says some ahistorical bullshit about the banality of our time is most likely teenager.

There's reasonable criticisms to make but that novel is not YA.

My point was that it is the kind of book that is easily dismissed on this board, but is actually quite good.

Here's more good contemporary lit.

—Because he didn’t speak Dutch – well, no more than inescapables like Prima! and Jan Lul and Kut!, and wonders like waar, which means both where and true – Lincoln didn’t tune in to Netherlands radio and TV. In fact, he said he developed a mistrust for Dutch media: they seemed to be speaking more than one language that was not his. So he would divert himself playing taggers and football in the Amstelveldt, or visiting the unadvertised not-quite-zoo toward the rear of Vondelpark: an unkempt, ratty-grassed, fenced-in enclave where an odd ark of animals – roosters, bison, even llamas – would be deposited for a few weeks, then silently withdrawn. He would just have given a colt a name, he said, and come to recognize its markings, when the grazer would not be there any more…
By his first December in Amsterdam, Lincoln had learned to skate, and it quickly became his soul’s sparkler. As many as four afternoons a week, he would make his way to a cavernous rink in a converted municipal-pool building a quick step from the Museumplein, where he would lace up his ankle-immobilizing Bally Patiners and start to oval, usually to piped-in Lehár waltzes. He would continue until eighteen minutes before his family’s 6:30 dinner, milking every moment, adoring the overdriving, hellbent forward mobility that came from reducing his resistance to one narrowest line of contact. And the side-benefits!: the whistling air chilling the middle of his lips, the intense timelessness, the finespray of snow as he rounded turns or changed gears…

But his greatest fun in Holland, he said, was the Elfstedentocht, a midwinter ice-skating marathon that ran for over 200 kilometers up north in Friesland. Starting in Leeuwarden, the course cut through frozen canals and rivers and lakes, past hundreds of thousands of vapor-seeping spectators in Sneek and Stavoren and Hindeloopen and Dokkum and other Friesian villages, before looping back to Leeuwarden. It was, he said, stunning fun: Lincoln and his folks, bundled in down and woolen hats and unending grins, would pack into their car and runabout from town to town, catching blurry glimpses. Maybe 17,000 bladers would slit by, every one skittering into checkpoints to have passcards stamped – in each town! And by hand! And along the way: brass bands, and thousand-voiced singalongs, and frostbite doctors ready to treat fingers – and worse – tested by the unrelenting twenty below…
The strongest skaters clocked in at around seven or eight hours, but the event didn’t offer much of a prize – beyond finding your correct shoes among the mountain of 34,000 at finish – and many people did it just to do it, not in competition. It had always been like that: the race had its origins, Lincoln learned, in a centuries-old local tradition of the journey. It began to be codified in the 1890s, and the first official Elfstedentocht was run in 1909, in a contest won by the daughter of the country’s largest manufacturer of skates. Thrillingly, the race took place during the first two Februaries that Lincoln spent in the Netherlands – hail van Benthem, victor eternal! And then it stopped. The race disappeared. The reward of the winter was gone. There were no trips up north. The rumble car stayed in its slot. The regional council said the ice wasn’t thick enough. Someone had determined that, for safety reasons, the course had to maintain a minimum thickness of fifteen cm throughout, and for year after year it just didn’t. Some folks tried filling the holes in the ice, others even performed what they called ice transplants. And while a regionful of people waited week after week for good news, winter after winter, Lincoln worked on his own skating at an indoor rink in Amsterdam.

—Y’know, I mean, Lincoln – he says he likes, he really appreciates something about the Dutch – y’know he speaks freely about this stuff, about his background, it’s like nostalgic, it’s like he’s living it all over again, for the first time – and one thing he says he likes is Dutch directness, this like no-beating-around-the-mulberry-bush quality they have. Because the Current Year publishing philosophy of muh minorities, muh queers, muh womyn, muh underrepresented "voices" makes finding anything worth reading among contemporary fiction a massive chore. Literary agents and editors literally say things like they care more about who an author is than what their writing is like. I don't care about an author's identity unless they write something so good it makes me want to know more about them so this emphasis on identity over ability is cancer. Maybe a handful of decent writers still manage to get published but digging through all the shit to find them feels like a waste of time.

Authors are also expected to have a "social media presence" nowadays as well. The coasts should be purged.
