Veeky Forums, I need to make nitric acid from scratch. That's right, from SCRATCH. I need a method that I can still use to produce nitric acid even if the world goes to hell.

Just use the plasma arc from high voltage and blow air through it.
Ideally you want higher O2 concentrations present. and Bubble it through water.
That's pretty much as basic as you're gonna get.
HNO3 and HNO2 are gonna be the main results. But you can purify further.

user, may I ask what you are doing with nitric acid?
it is a great oxidizer, for this reason (just in case my fire burns out) i can add nitric acid to the put out fire and it com-busts again. this can be really useful in survival.
I'm gonna warn you, it's fairly extensive as for setting it up and getting good yields.
When I did it way back in the day, I could only get concentrations around 30-40% by weight. And that was left on overnight, using an air mattress blower.
Not very efficient though. A Jacob's ladder would probably be where to start. Do some more research. There is some stuff already out there.
i figure 30-40% would be fine for the uses i need for it. setting it up just takes a lot of planning, which i have no problem with.

Fields that have been left fallow for a while should haves lot of nitrates in them from bacterial activity, how you extract is is beyond me
