He did that in order to simplify his language.
He knew he was far too influenced by Joyce. He could never beat Joyce at his own game, which he attempted in one of his first works, Murphy, a "Joycean" novel.
He switched to French to distance himself from that.
And what an amazing outcome it had.
Beckett is far beyond your shitty memery.
No mortal man is beyond memery
Douglas Hofstadter wrote a wonderful book on literary translation titled 'Le Ton beau de Marot'.
what's the meaning behind the play on words
what horror it must have been as a writer with joyce looming over you
ton beau / tombeau (= tomb)
the meaning behind it you mong
obviously if i asked you about it I'm already aware of the play on words
And what a pleasure for Nora
>the letters
Over and under.
not him but
>le ton beau

your beautiful (beau means darling/boyfriend, not just beautiful so this is also "your darling")
>tombeau
is a tomb but it's also a musical eulogy.

So when you guys want to read great Russian literature to you guys read it in Russian?? I don\t get this board
I wish I could read russian, but I'm not there yet. The translations I read are ok.
no they're not
as much as it applies to anyone
They might convey the ideas and narratives somewhat decently, but those prose is different. Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky are so fucking terrible in my language. Myabe their writings in Russian are good but the translations make for a crap book
"tombeau" also has a meaning close to elegy or epitaph in this context, so the punny reading is still a relevant title.
pynchon is better
gravitys rainbow has rendered ulysses utterly irrelevant
how complicated is Gravity's Rainbow in comparision to Ulysses on a scale from 1 to 10
in terms of PROSE? 3
