This is cool as hell. Should I buy these? I didn't know that the game of thrones had such a cool collection of books like this. Do I buy it or not?

Hate to break it to you, but that's not actually the complete series.

No. I'd never suggest anyone read A Song of Ice and Fire. But if you really want to read them that badly, hold off on any fancy collections until the series is actually over. Pick up used copies of the paperbacks or borrow them from the library. They might seem long but they're easy reads.

Ive never read the books before, are they really that bad?

they have over 8,000 reviews on amazon giving them 5 stars lol

What was achieved?
A television series on HBO.

Most of the historically critically acclaimed poetic epics can fit inside one of those books.

The books are great, it's just Martin will never finish it.

Stick with the show which has actually overtaken the books. Really shitty adaptation points aside (the entire Dorne segment? Not in the books), the show will at least have an ending.

i fucking hope he doesn't watch the show so his writing doesn't gets corrupted or fall to the demand of the vultures asking him to quickly crap book that going to probably be shit if he is pressured into doing it.

He writes for the show.

That's what's kickstarted this whole thing. He got a shitload of fame and dosh or the show, which is doing the lion's share for him, so he doesn't want to finish writing.

Just yesterday he said he wished a meteorite would wipe out mankind so people would stop asking about the book (so he could forget about it).

you could have read infinite jest 3 times instead

you're just encouraging him to read asoiaf

Honestly it's a good series, the problem is you're getting invested in a series that will never be finished.

Really the only thing I have against the books (and you can probably add the show to this as well) is that it's effectively set the course of fantasy on a path of "everyone is a shitbag it's all grimdark the world sucks balls."

...

whoever designed that graphic should be put to death

there was another (presumably maybe by an user) but i couldn't find it anywhere

The first three books are pretty fun stories. There's no real literary depth to anything, but it has drama, and good characters, and a decent story.

The 4th book takes a weird direction and kind of abandons a lot of what the first three books were talking about. It's still the same general story, and some of the main characters are around, but it's missing some pretty important characters for some reason.

The 5th book is just dogshit. Very evident that GRRM was full of himself when he was writing this, and didn't actually put any effort into making an enjoyable book.

What Dorne Segment? That was in the books, the kingdom of Dorne, them kidnapping Myrcella and all that.

Yeah but the books don't have the Sand Snakes going around kinslaying, murdering Doran & Trystane (all to avenge Oberyn and his FAMILY), killing Myrcella, or "you want a bad girl but you need a bad PUSSAAAAAYYYYYYYYY" and so on

>you want a bad girl but you need a bad PUSSAAAAAYYYYYYYYY

Is that said in the tv show? That sounds awful. My brother's obsessed with the show, I appeased him a little by reading the books, but he still wants me to watch the show. I don't think I want to familia.

See for yourself.

Eww

can i assume the whole series is just low quality softcore porn fantasy?

Season 1 starts off with a high (sticks to books with Sean Bean as Ned to cap it off) and it slowly goes downhill from there.

That being said, Peter Dinklage (Tyrion) is a fantastic actor and his scenes with Charles Dance (Tywin) are some of the best in the show by far.

Why would you buy a boxed set from an incomplete series? Seriously. Why???

:^)

The golden days of Veeky Forums, right 'ere. rip derp&envy

This, OP. Not only are the length of the books a concern, most who read and reviewed it are only doing it because of the show. You can get through several classics that are worth infinitely more of your time than this series. I would only read if you truly have nothing better to read.

These editions are awful. Shit quality paperbacks. The illustrated edition of the first book is the nicest version available for a reasonable price. Hopefully they do the rest of the series like that.

Got 3 books from my brother yesterday, he was gonna give them to a used bookstore so I took them instead, unfortunately its book 2-4 so I would have to go buy book 1.

So you all would recommend me to skip them?

I do have a bunch of other books that need to be read. Just finished Lolita and before that, The Trial so I was thinking it was time to read some "epic" styled books.(read: action packed)

Maybe I should just do what he intended, give them to a used book store.

If you're interested then try them. If they're no good for you then trade them in.
