I doubt there's any causal effect between being smart and voting for the left. Typically people who live in cities vote more on the left, and typically these people are more educated. It shouldn't be surprising then that there is a correlation between voting on the left and having a slightly higher IQ, since you're likely to come from an urban area and have had a higher education.
