They've produced a handful of interesting philosophers over the past few decades, so it's not hopeless.

I really liked Malouf's An Imaginary Life

Stop posting Simpsons references you cuck.

>being this much of a hot head

wew

It's too hot to think.

Yeah, there's a philosophical novel called Diary of a Shitposter that is pretty good.

Deserves Nobel prize

Shitposting is literature.
Our posts are on another level.

Over 30 years ago too.

Andy Griffiths is true literary kino
we have a lot of poetry and colonial out bush shit but it's probably not very interesting

The Secret River was pretty good. There's a high quality two part TV movie created based on the book.

*blocks your path*

*BRRAAPP*
OH excuse me

>escapes from gravitational pull of a brown hole by farting
QUITE PUNGENT MY DEAR

I really liked this one

...

Yeah
Their /pol/ shitposting is a fucking noteworthy literature

Patrick White is enormously underrated, Voss is a fucking weird peyote-in-the-desert journey of a book.

weird how much these books contributed to a self-formulation of myself as 'australian' and not 'not-australian'

Try nick cave

i wish we were forced to study more aus poetry beyond The Man from Snowy River. I'm reading some Henry Lawson now and this shit is good. It fucking riles you up and makes you so proud to be aussie. Doesn't this rile you up?

"Australia's a big country

An' Freedom's humping bluey,

An' Freedom's on the wallaby

Oh! don't you hear 'er cooey?

She's just begun to boomerang,

She'll knock the tyrants silly,

She's goin' to light another fire

And boil another billy.

"Our fathers toiled for bitter bread

While loafers thrived beside 'em,

But food to eat and clothes to wear,

Their native land denied 'em.

An' so they left their native land

In spite of their devotion,

An' so they came, or if they stole,

Were sent across the ocean.

"Then Freedom couldn't stand the glare

O' Royalty's regalia,

She left the loafers where they were,

An' came out to Australia.

But now across the mighty main

The chains have come ter bind her –

She little thought to see again

The wrongs she left behind her.

"Our parents toil'd to make a home

Hard grubbin 'twas an' clearin'

They wasn't crowded much with lords

When they was pioneering.

But now that we have made the land

A garden full of promise,

Old Greed must crook 'is dirty hand

And come ter take it from us.

So we must fly a rebel flag,

As others did before us,

And we must sing a rebel song

And join in rebel chorus.

We'll make the tyrants feel the sting

O' those that they would throttle;

They needn't say the fault is ours

If blood should stain the wattle!"

As an american I enjoyed Arthur Upfield's stuff.

Patrick White?

Peter Temple (The Broken Shore)

Neville Shute

>tfw Australians are Mersault

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_Cronulla_riots

Why can't all poetry have nice rhyming schemes like this instead of all this modernist wasteland crap.
>land
>hand
>promise
>take-from-us

>it's another surf life savers think they own the beach episode

Australia is a strange place.

It has produced nothing of value yet is one of the main trial destinations used by companies.

Patrick White.

>Their /pol/ shitposting is a fucking noteworthy literature

this

Loads of metal
We're tested on because our population consists of retarded, docile normies and also we're a white country

gay

I'm in my 20s and I don't think I've read an Australian book since Tomorrow When The War Began, which was when I was 13ish

Henry lawson goes alright

I will be the next Great Australian of literature. I'll send you guys a postcard ;)

Shantaram was really good.

heh

i like how David Malouf tries to skate around being as gay as fuck, but ends up writing about a young boy brought up by wolves meeting an old exiled roman poet known for his pornographic writing.

The whole Bulletin Debate between Lawson and Patterson is pretty fucking great to be honest. That fact that it's in poetry gives it this hyped up rap-battle vibe.

Ah read his novel "And the Ass Saw the Angel" and ah could not stop talkin' like that for MONTHS, boy. Ah had to reckon with talkin' like a suthun baptist lay preacher who fucks every woman in TOWN an' then escapes, and ah could not STOP. fuck nick cave.

In 1899, Henry Lawson declared that any talented Australian writer would be well-advised "to study elementary anatomy, especially as applies to the cranium, and then shoot himself carefully with the aid of a looking glass".

J. M. Coetzee

No one has mentioned Helen Garner. Quite good stuff. (Monkey Grip especially.)

Inland changed my life desu

It really is. I have been reading The Myth of Sisyphus for over a week now. All I can do at home is swim and watch TV.

>Shitposting

I'd like to see an academic study of why Australia is such fertile ground for shitposting. There must be a way to apply such mastery of banter to actual novels, right?

Reading's for fags.

>why Australia is such fertile ground for shitposting
a culture that rewards ironic detachment and cuntiness

Both world wars meant entire portions of small communities could be removed and never seen again. Instead of growing closer as a community, they just became more detached and cynical. This attitude eventually poisoned the cities and thus entire portions of society fell to nihilist abandon and joyless shitposting.

New Zealand drives literary circles around Australia.

I think it's an influence of Americanism but a certain removal from it. I'm a quality shitposter and I'm from New Zealand, but it's much the same for me.

>I'd like to see an academic study of why Australia is such fertile ground for shitposting.

It has a lot to do with our national attitude of larrikinism. We live for banter and shit-stirring, but it's rarely out of a deeply emotional place. The problem with Yank banter (though it's often good) is that a lot of Yanks are too quick to get emotional. That isn't what banter is about. The UK lads would tell you the same. You need to have an emotional remove from it.

Most foreigners mistake this emotional remove in our case for irony because they don't understand larrikinism and how it has shaped our capacity to do this sort of thing.

We have a natural affinity for it, so it really is kind of effortless for most of us compared to a lot of the world. It's hard to explain.

Nah cunt it stems from the larrikin culture of our young men which is in part a reaction to cultural imperialism

Brazilian here and can confirm.

>That chapter in "The boomerang that didnt come back" when the guys didgeridoo gets kicked apart by kangaroos and he has to glue it back together with vegemite

No true Australian would use vegimite as a glue

clearly

>using a delicacy as a glue

Fucking hell this article is great, every quote has me fucking laughing.
>Just a reminder that Cronulla's 1st wog bashing day is still on this Sunday. Chinks bashing day is on the 27th and the Jews are booked for early January

>True History of the Kelly Gang
>It's not the true history of the Kelly gang

pretty difficult to write a book when you are fighting off drop bears with a stick but seriously it is much easier to go to burgerland and get your shit published

no, they're doing the Haka.

We have a poet on our money

>Chalmers
>analytic
>interesting
kek

It's because we don't give a fuck about anything and generally enjoy and encourage jovial cuntish behaviour.

Yes, it did.

>Neurotransmitter chemicals are actually vegemite
Was hoping it would be good up until then

I love how dismissive Veeky Forums is about actual, serious academic philosophy by one of the world's leading authorities on philosophy of mind. I've talked about Chalmers for hours with my phil. of mind professor, discussing how it compares with theories of Dennett, Ryle, Kripke, etc., which of his arguments are strong and which need to be abandoned, and all you can say is "he's bad".

wow who knew an australian couldnt handle the banter?

I'm European.

You're a peein'. I'm not that bloke you replied to but i'm Australian myself.

no one gives a shit cunt

>no one gives a shit cunt
I'll bite your face cunt!

A few scenes in Lord of the Rings were filmed not that far from Australia.
