Hey dudes so I'm a paper fetishist but finally thinking of buying one of these satanic devices, because can't afford all the books I want, and can't even get most of them as I need to read in foreign languages as well.

So here's my question: do I need to do anything with it after the purchase, in order to read books I pirated from the Internet? Because I don't want to pay "ayemason" for 2 MB of zeroes and ones if you know what I mean.

No you don't. Except if you're dumb enough to buy an amazon-type one.
I'd recommend the cybook ocean, it's perfect to read pdf, which is extremely useful (you don't find everything in epub).

>Swindle Paperweight
Most books are in epub format. You're going to have to convert them to azw3 if you want to read them on your kindle.

There's literally no reason not to get the Kobo Aura One unless you're a filthy subhuman poorfag.

Nah dude. You might have to set up your profile or some shit but that's about it. You don't even have to get online with it ever. I never took my Paperwhite online until after owning it about five months.

Unless What he said. .txt documents will read fine, PDFs will work (though I don't like reading them on my Kindle). Any epubs you have will need to be converted with Calibre. Just download it and it's pretty easy.

>There's literally no reason not to get the Kobo Aura One unless you're a filthy subhuman poorfag.
not OP but this thing has been out of stock for like 4 months

goddamnit kobo hurry up

ps: calibre conversion takes like 2 seconds

How is the epub converting? It's true that pdf is popular, haven't really thought about that

I was looking at the kindle paperwhite because its got good reviews

I am a filthy subhuman poorfag that's why I need a reader in the first place, and the paperwhite is only 110 quid

>dont like reading them on my kindle

why?

On my paperwhite specifically, since it's kinda small, and I can't change the font size or reflow text on a PDF, and some books are formatted in fancy ways and pinching and zooming is cumbersome. It feels like I'm hindering my speed and comfort reading because I'm always swiping around to move around, instead of just relaxing and tapping my finger to turn a page.

I woudn't buy kindle ones if I were you. Can only read MOBI, when they decide to fuck you over and make it impossible to convert you'll have to pay to read. Most books are PDF files, so it's very useful to have a 8" screen. Epub converting from pdf is very, very random. The cybook ocean has its own integrated system to read PDFs (it's named smart reader or whatever), and has yet to fail me. Epub to MOBI seems to be fine with Calibre, but idk why you'd pain yourself doing that when you can just buy an universal ereader for the same price.

Cant you convert pdfs to something else?

You are supposed to be able to convert a PDF into epub and mobi format but any time I've tried it came out all fucked up; random line breaks, etc. Problem is exacerbated if there are sidebars.

>Most books are PDF files
What the fuck? Is everyone on Veeky Forums just retarded when it comes to pirating books or something?

It's easier to find EPUBs of most books than PDFs.

It depends. Classics are mostly in epub. But specialized books are only in PDF format. Most recents philosophy books are, by example.

Textbooks are pretty much the only thing that's difficult to find in anything other and PDF.

Why is PDF still a thing if ereaders are also a thing, and they don't support it? Weird

The Paperwhite is fine. It's a reliable and easy to use e-reader. The thing is that for the same price you can a very similar device that has most of the features but with a lot of more freedom.

Kindles are sort of the iPhones of e-readers minus the severely overpriced part.

Idk, find me "Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming Into Existence" in epub format and I'll agree. 80% of the books I read are PDF-only.

Good question. Maybe because people read mostly popular things, easy to find in epub, and not specialist books like people here.

Im reading a review of this cybook reader and it looks pretty nice, I have to say

Which is a shame because I was already confident in my paperwhite purchase, and now I have to reavaluate it

OP here I have this cioran book as well, but I just hate reading on the PC so its waiting for my ereader phase.

Now that I think about it, I want to read stuff like occult textbooks and some obscure italian novels, so maybe I did a mistake by not considering this PDF problem

With non-fiction and things that have a lot of sidebars, graphs, figures, pictures, etc., it just becomes difficult and more cumbersome to read on a barebones ereader than it would on just a tablet or something. It's not so much that e-readers don't support PDF, it's just not the same experience as reading a device-specified format.

It's not from Cioran, eheh. It's from David Benatar. If you like Cioran and his "De l'inconvénient d'être né" (idk the english title), I'd recommend it a lot.
If you want to know if a PDF reader will be useful in your case, just go to bookzz.org, check some titles, and see if there's an epub version.

I've got a kindle paperwhite. Thing is awesome. I used to torrent books and use Calibre for conversions and management on an older Nook. I'm not poor so I don't mind buying electronic copies of the books I read. I also dont have a lot of room for physical books at the moment anyway.

the kindle is so called because it is a device for virtual book burning.

I recommend the Kobo Aura H2O, it's waterproof and lets you read Epubs, PDFs, word documents, and even DRM stripped mobis. It also allows for micro-SD memory expansion. I recommend picking up Calibre for the PC and getting the extensions that allow you to strip DRM from books, then get a Kindle Unlimited subscription. Download the books from your library and Kindle Unlimited, strip the DRM, put it on the Kobo. Done.

How is its pdf reading

It's pretty good. It's black and white, but it reads like paper which is good. My only issue with it is that it doesn't add PDFs to your library unless you put them on a "Shelf," and even then it's by file name. But I like its performance and have over 400 books on it.

Just get Calibre and convert all your epubs to mobis. Its really not difficult.

Most pirated books are either PDF or ePub. Converting ePub to mobi is as simple as drag-n-drop into KindleGen.

smile.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?docId=1000765211

PDF is much harder. You have to download K2pdfopt and fuck around with the options until you get a PDF file that is formatted for the Kindle's screen size.

willus.com/k2pdfopt/

Either way, once you have the file you just connect the Kindle to your computer and drag-n-drop like a USB drive.

Physical ALWAYS beats digital.

You don't get the point of the ereader at all. The physical book It's more impressive to own sure. And I intend to own the books I read on the ereader, for decoration.

ebook is easier to use and more convenient, and if you only read easily available books then what's the point of this talk

I need the ereader because I can't find the physical books that I want to read, or those are very expensive. In the future when I'll have lotsamoney I'll hunt down those books and display them proudly on a shelf

...

The paperwhite is pretty decent. The text is clear and the backlight is surprisingly useful sometimes, but can be turned completely off too. As for getting books, epubs are easy to find and Calibre converts them to mobi without fucking the formatting 99% of the time.
Also private trackers like myan tend to have the mobi version of most books.

It's not about the books you own, it's about the books you pretend to have read.

This, mostly. Though I like reading physical just fine, and if you are seriously finding yourself unable to enjoy reading while holding the heft of a book and turning pages with small print and the aide of a reading light, then you might have some issues. But an e-reader is handy to take on the go, especially if you are reading a hefty book. Also keeps them safe. When I happened to take my reading to a poolside, I took it in the form of an e-reader. Would never take a book I care about where a kid could splash it.

It's a genuinely good tracker for ebooks and the like.
I don't have an invite though so hope that registrations are up

>>Idk, find me "Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming Into Existence" in epub format and I'll agree. 80% of the books I read are PDF-only.
It's on my preferred torrent website in epub.

I just watched a bunch of reviews of the Kobo Aura One. Looks like the only downside is it's extremely unresponsive sometimes, whereas the kindles are much snappier.

I also heard there's a modding community. Do you know if someone developed a snappier ROM? That would fix the problem.

BUY BOOKS SUPPORT AUTHORS STOP STEALING

Nah.

But user, they're dead.

Calibre autoconverts to azw3 flawlessly, poor reasoning here.

The real reason to hate kindles are the bizarre interactions between pirated books and amazon account as far as advertising if you choose to update the firmware.
