Did I just buy a meme guys?

Did I just buy a meme guys?

Norwegian Wood is a great song. I listened to it earlier and thought about my ex-girlfriend. It helped revive me from my malaise, even if just for more sadness. The book has the opposite effect.

it's too bland to be a meme. Although, you probably just spent 10 bucks and 7 hours for a couple boners.

I haven't read Norwegian Wood but I have read a fair bit of Murakami. He's a bit of a meme but an enjoyable one, like wojak.

Nothing out of the ordinary then.

it's his weakest novel. start with hard-boiled wonderland and the end of the world honestly

i always assumed i would have enjoyed murakami if i had never been in love with other living humans for periods of time

open to the possibility of being wrong, but fuck that shit sounds trite

ok, i'm going to be hated but this one is one of my favorite. I red it 3 times I think and I don't really know why. The first time I red it,I was a fresh student and I could easyly identify myself with the protagonist so this is maybe because i liked it.
However all books from Murakami are a mix of sexual content and disturbed characters,

One of my favorites too
Naoko a best

I read some of that and it seemed way too quirky, in an annoying unaware sort of way. Was I missing some sort of irony or satire?

yeah it was somewhat self aware. if you found the quirkiness annoying though, murakami is probably not for you.

or maybe try his less quirky books. I actually really like south of the border, west of the sun

...

Is the book as good as the movie?

Is the movie as good as the book ?

That's the only Murakami book that has any literary value.

The movie is like listening to a long blameless scream getting louder in the back of your mind. Quite enjoyable

It's all right. Made feel some feely feels.

It's literally his worst book. Although, I didn't read anything beyond After Dark.

iq84 was a drudge too. I really liked colorless tsukuru tazaki though, imo one of his stronger novels

Different user,

I have only read south of the border

It was interesting, but the deadpan softporn scenes were so off-putting that I don't think I will ever pick up a book by this nip again.

Naoko a shit.
Midori was better.
Reiko was best.

Honestly, the ending should've just been Toru running away with Reiko doing whatever, instead of the "I don't know where I am Midori" garbage ending.

I was surprised but the movie is actually pretty strong. Directed by some Vietnamese guy.

Whoops, didn't realise who you were responding to.

Holy bait

>weakest novel
>not colorless tsukuru

Hard-Boiled is my favorite novel of his, if only because the end made me yell "NO!" unlike most of his novels where I finish and go "huh."

Seconded.

Hard-Boiled has an excellent structure, as well as interesting imagery and metaphor. It is one of his stronger novels. Due to it's structure, the themes are easily discernible, but they aren't so obvious or trite as to be boring.

Granted, I read that novel at 16, 12 years ago now. Were I to read it again, my opinion might change.

I definitively agree, but I also read it a couple years ago and it was my first murakami book so I might be a little biased.

I think Dance Dance Dance is his strongest tho. It's like a better version of the wind up bird chronicle imo, at least in a thematic/emotionally resonant kind of way. It's not as widely read tho cuz it pretty much requires reading A Wild Sheep Chase (which is also great)

Murakami is a meme and he has kind of an annoying pseud fanbase but damn if I don't fucking gobble his books up

>he has kind of an annoying pseud fanbase but damn if I don't fucking gobble his books up
Lol, too true.

His works are popular because of their accessibility, somewhat Noir-like strangeness, and how well they translate into English. Unfortunately, this is a recipe for pseuds in droves who give little thought to critical thematic analysis of his works, and are too unfamiliar with Japanese culture to genuinely unravel their themes.

I haven't read Dance, Dance, Dance yet (skipped that one), but I've considered a return to Murakami recently, and I may have to pick it up on your recommendation.

So i'm reading Kafka on the Shore right now, and it's sort of annoying how all the characters on the library side of the story are pretty much these perfect, beautiful, intelligent and morally infallable people. It sort of takes me out of the book sometimes, it's like the authors ideal fantasy friends. I mean i expect this stuff from blockbuster movies but this guy is a praised writer
I enjoy the book overall though

It's honestly on par with A Walk to Remember

>I do anal sex and have never used my vagina for sex

Would you describe Murakami as all style, no substance?

It's supposed to resonate with you.

You're supposed to detest the main character because he reflects parts of you that you don't enjoy seeing. And a powerful argument against adultery.

is that supposed to be a case against his intelligence or morals or what?

Tumblr core as fuck

I just find it strange that you took Oshima and Saeki as 'perfect' people when they struggle with rather tangible problems. Sure they appear pleasant on the outside but there's a lot going on inside.

All the music shit seemed extraneous to me though

I unironically really liked colorless tsukuru tazaki. dunno why it garned the poor(er) reception that it did.

>tfw you will never retire to finland with a qt jap wife and two daughters and live out your days making comfy pottery

Hope you enjoy it OP.
