Why has it jumped to #1 on amazon?

1984 is many people's first 'real book'

what is lit's thoughts

What a fucking horrible cover

yeah but it got you in my thread

1984 has been referenced a lot in the United States recently to compare parallels in trumps administration.

this is in response to your question in the header btw.

its not a bad first 'real book' it is most peoples high school lit book anyway and reason is p much summed up by the only thing that worries me is shitty ignorant but politically charged retards fumbling around misquoting it and basing their entire life around the sparknotes analysis while the trend lasts

>that cover
Literally propaganda.

>>the only thing that worries me is shitty ignorant but politically charged retards fumbling around misquoting it and basing their entire life around the sparknotes analysis while the trend lasts
This has already been happening for the last like 4 years. I don't even know how it could get any worse at this point.

just curious, what did you two glean from the book?

>be Orwell
>write 1984
>still become a spy for the British government and rat out non-violent crypto-commies you knew of

He's scum.

>non-violent
>commies
Revolutionary politics are inherently violent.

1984 and/or Animal Farm have to be read in conjunction with Homage to Catalonia as to not misinterpret Orwell as some faggy liberal.

>the only thing that worries me is shitty ignorant but politically charged retards fumbling around misquoting it and basing their entire life around the sparknotes analysis while the trend lasts
It might be a slight improvement over the JK Rowling corpus

there is nothing wrong with jailing leftists

>why has it jumped to #1 on amazon?
Because Uncle Donald himself personally controls all the media, the entire economy, the statistical and historical records, the academies, and the publishers of dictionaries, and he is trying to reform the English language according to a political agenda.

the liberal side of the world is more 1984-esque as far as censorship of language is concerned. .. but time has proven that our world is unraveling into a Brave New World.
-sex
-drugs
-distractions
-ignorance
-modified humans

>this is nto what happened

It's better than the film cover I've got.

This

I've thought for some time now that Amazon manipulates the top sellers list.

Come on, does anybody believe people actually bought John Lewis' books after the Trump thing?

Please prove if I'm wrong, I'm not one of those people who believe in alternative facts, but the generation born after the 90's is actually the one who consumes less drugs and has less sex, right? I've read that somewhere.

Distractions are certainly an issue, but not all of them, but the ones that are actually in midst of all the information being passed do the hard task of actually making people more ignorant or blind-deaf to reality.

Genetic engineering is not an issue already.

The method of simplifying vocabulary and grammar to eliminate critical thinking and political resistance is actually the most terrifying thing that I have ever read.

Why is there a thread for this book on two boards?

I took soma more as an equivalent to pharmacy-type drugs to than street stuff. It seems like everyone I know is on an anxiety or depression drug.

Conservatives did the buying 1984 meme during Obama's NSA scandal and Democrats have been itching to try it ever since

>scum for ratting out commies
what.

Someone's too young to remember the Patriot Act.

People are interested in this new trend of police state. But I thought Huxley did a better job at this.

It's pretty accessible in terms of the writing, and the reader is naturally inclined to associate with Winston so it makes them feel like a badass revolutionary while they read it.

With regards to its actual merits, it's alright. Orwell isn't a great writer and the story is basically a glorified YA novel.

One thing I really loved, though, was the realistic portrayal of the efficacy of torture. The fact that they sold each other out rather than the romanticized ideal of enduring torture for the sake of someone you love.

I hope this is satire because it's not trump doing this but the left

>'the' left
Rojava is leftist. Orwell was a leftist.
Hillary and liberals are right wingers, it's just that the overton window in the USA is fucking shit.

What is the modern day American main stream left then if you want specificity instead of some ghost like term like "the left"

Reality isn't real. The book is more about metaphysics than corrupt government.

Animal Farm is anti-leftist.... that's just people failing to understand satire.

>'real book'

Poor man's Brave New World.

You're also forgetting about sugar and video games. These are addictions.

Not what happened. You are scum for getting a simple story wrong.

Poor mans 'We'

more like Poor Man's Demons/The Possessed

orwell is a talent-less hack but people like you are whats wrong with this country we need another kent state.

>controls all the media

it's INSANE how many people I know who are on some sort of anxiety or depression medication. this is a major problem, and literally no one talks about it

Literally an imaginative critique of Stalinist USSR.

all art is propaganda, laddie

>le orange populist is LITERALLY an insane socialist dictator!!!!!! i read it in the book 1488 it must be real!!!!!!!!!!!!

It blows my mind that such a significant portion of the population actually thinks like this.

What. A socialist dictator? The one candidate that could have benn accused of that lost the primaries i'm afraid.

Where will you be when the acid hits

It's not real art then laddie

Anyone else observe the swarm of retards talking about how this book describes the political present AGAIN
read another fucking book, normies
and then some fuck always chimes in and says "actually Brave New World"
and then some third fuck always says "it's more like a combination of the two"
good lord!

climate change dude... burning books. people need to wake up and accept reality.

>Animal Farm is anti-leftist....

It is not anti-leftist, it is anti-Stalinist, as is all of Orwell's work. His whole life and work was a struggle against authoritianism, in favor of democratic and unionist socialism.

Controlled opposition.

1984 is pushed forward as a way to hide the real totalitarian tactics of a Brave New World.

Reminder that the CIA was behind Animal Farm which is as a fascist as you can get.

Kids are literally taught CIA propaganda.

Orwell is the literal definition of a cognac communist, he supported unionist socialism where it benefited him. Privately the guy was a authoritarian conservative and refused to drink, eat or touch anything that wasn't English.

>confusing real liberals and modern leftists

>Wow! 1984! It's so relevant now!
>A cautionary tale!
>It changed my entire perspective in life!
Any forum that doesn't ban discussion of both Orwell and Huxley are forever doomed to be bombarded with people who haven't read a book since high-school.

All three of those statements are correct.

I hate it when a book I have on the back-burner spikes in popularity, then I ether read it now and feel like a sheep, or later and be a late-fag

Okay, I admit it, I laughed

brave new world is the better book. would love to live as an alpha and take soma

And then an even bigger retard says "It's just like Farenheit 451!"

This. The majority of people dont understand why they're unhappy, and just take pills thinking that will solve things. Meanwhile they're still unhappy and now also wasting money on pills and therapy that wont change anything because they're being lazy and apathetic even when it comes to their wellbeing as a person.

If you were to go off the hierarchy of needs, everyone stunted at the social tier and never figured out how to fulfill it. Instead they point fingers outwards and try to change everything else instead of changing their own self. They do this to themselves.

>and refused to drink, eat or touch anything that wasn't English.
didn't he work in a restaurant in paris for a while?

Modern life presents massive barriers to self-actualization, better people be on meds than overthrow society or just killing themselves

In the book, Winston Smith is a character working for the “Ministry of Truth,” the ironically named branch of government responsible for fixing the media to be always in Big Brother’s favor. If Big Brother says something which turns out to be wrong, the MoT edits it. If the offending news item was so incorrect as to be ludicrous, sometimes Smith replaces that day’s statement with complete fabrication, such as awarding a metal to a non-existent war hero. Records of items the MoT wants to purge go down the “memory hole,” implied to be an incinerator.

In this government, slogans are enforced, including "War is peace", "Freedom is slavery", and "Ignorance is strength." At one point the government switches its alliance from the countries of Eurasia to Eastasia and a speaker in mid-rant against one is handed a note and corrects himself to immediately continue ranting against the other as if the entire speech had been about that. A motif frequently cited in the book is “Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past.”

This shows a fundamental method of the dystopia: The absolute control of media and attempt to control the thinking of every individual through brute force. At no point does the government worry that its subjects will jump up and go “Wait a minute, you just told us we were at war with Eurasia! I remember it, it just happened!” Whenever anybody does, off they go to the “Ministry of Love” where they get tortured until they see it Big Brother’s way. But most people don’t. Most people show an eerie, cow-like ability to be led, against everything a logical mind would expect.

Trump has demonstrated an uncanny, almost unbelievable ability to just bend the past however he wants. And you can protest all you want; nobody is really stopping him. We all get shocked in the moment - How could he have the unmitigated gall to say this shocking thing? But he delivers these shocks so regularly that nobody has time to fully process them. If a scandal blows up for more than two days, Trump will just do something else outrageous and the former story will be dropped to cover the new one. Trump is exploiting the media’s goldfish attention span. He’s overloading the news, giving them so much scandal that they don’t even have time to cover it all.

And his gall has extended to stunts like telling the intelligence community, to their faces, that all the bad things he said about them only weeks ago simply did not happen. How about the border wall with Mexico and deporting the Muslims, what about those campaign promises? If he accomplishes them, he’s crow about it, but if he doesn’t, he’ll deny he ever made them. It doesn’t matter how many printed copies of the truth you have. It doesn’tmatter how many videos you have incriminating him. Trump doesn’t even need a memory hole. His method counts on the American people to be really THAT stupid - and apparently, he’s right. How can a man brag about sexual assault, make cruel fun of handicapped people, and refuse to release his tax returns over and over, yet still make it this far? Isn’t it amazing? Well, he’ll keep doing it while everyone else is too stunned to know how to react.

Trump can’t lose, guys! Get used to it. He can just sculpt whatever reality he wants, and the truth will die off while the lies get screamed over and over until everybody believes them - just like his smear job against his opponent. He’s not quite the same as any politician you’ve heard of before. He’s evolved past a Nixon or a Bush. A prototype had to evolve out of the ooze sooner or later, and it’s shocking that it even took this long.

But yes, politicians have lied before, politicians have had scandals before. But Trump is simply dispensing with all the foreplay and sugar-coating. Other politicians have to spin the media and put on a good face to try to appease their way out of their scandals. Trump literally bragged he could “shoot somebody and not lose voters.” He’s right, he could. And he’s not covering it up, he is pissing directly in your face and telling you it’s raining, and you’re going to believe it tomorrow or next week if you don’t believe it now. Other politicians bother to concoct some slippery lie when a reporter confronts them. Trump can just yell, “I’m not going to give you a question, you are fake news!” AND. IT. WORKED! If Trump had told that reporter “You’re a frog,” there is no doubt in my mind that that reporter would have poofed into a frog and hopped away croaking.

That’s what Orwell’s point with media was. Being able to out-debate the truth or hide the truth or P.R. your way out of the truth isn’t enough. You just erase the truth, magically in the public’s minds. Wasting your brain trying to fight it with logic is just how this strategy works against you.

That’s the key, people. Keep doing what you’re doing, and nobody will stop him. He doesn’t play by any rules written before.

Niggas talking about 1984 because of Trump when It Can't Happen Here is closer to an analogy

It Couldn't Happen Here is mostly slander against Huey Long though

>#1 on amazon
totally organic
