If you want to understand contemporary theory of gender you are required to read at least one book by Judith Butler or you won't know what anyone is talking about. People usually recommend gender trouble but this is because they're behind the times. What you should do instead is read the shorter (and earlier) essay "Performative Acts and Gender Constitution" and then read Bodies that Matter.

Let me start by saying that faggot e-celebs like Sargon don't interest me at all, so I'm not shilling here. But from what I understand Sargon is basically a jokey partisan pundit, and from what little I've heard of him talking about feminism (mostly from that Jontron thing), he's basically just giving the standard SJW caricature of it. Which is that it's reductvist and detached from reality in its postmodern hermeneutic of universal suspicion and structural overdeterminations.

This is basically true. "Academic feminists" are almost entirely nutjobs with shitty epistemologies that they blindly follow, whether it's psychoanalysis or some mutilated version of Foucault. They are dogmatists within tiny little narrow areas of stereotyped theory, that can't even be approached or read by theorists of the source theory more generally.

There are three types of academic feminists I've encountered:

1. Ordinary scholars who happen to do scholarship with decent epistemological frameworks but for feminist reasons. This is mostly an older generation of historians and such, e.g. someone who does more histories of ordinary women's lives because she feels traditional history has been written from a male elite perspective. Joan Wallace Scott is a good example. Many of these still use theory, like cultural anthro or Foucault, but it will be in the way that any scholar of their field uses theory, as subordinate to the general inquiry.

2. Theorywhores like Butler who aren't even good at theory, but parcel out little areas of scholarship where they can at least lord over their fellow incompetent women. Butler is a fucking hack cultist and no one will ever study her outside of her cult.

3. Gender studies types. They aren't real scholars, so they don't do #1, and they are too stupid or immune to cults to be #2, so they just get a BA in Queer Theory and then get a 9-5 job. They still use jargon but it's stuff that can be safely learned by mediocre students from textbooks. Nothing complex.

#2 is the only one that would apply to this thread, really, and I can assure you it's just about as bad as Sargon lets on. And I say this as someone fundamentally sympathetic to statements like "HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED THAT THE INSTITUTION OF PAVED ROADS IS ACTUALLY A FORM OF RAPE?" because I like grandiose structural theories of how everything sucks.

Don't get me wrong, the thrust of what #2 is saying is often correct on some irrecoverable architectonic level. But nearly every single one of them is just a Kristeva-worshiping fraud. Academic feminism is a quarantined daycare centre for crazy crying bitches, and it actually smothers the possibility of good feminist philosophy.
