Have you condsidered that forgiveness is a fundamental psychological trait in humans? You can ask from forgiveness from real people and from yourself not just God. But for any forgiveness to happen, you must admit your wrong doings. Dostoyevsky was an existentialist primarily, so when he writes about things like forgiveness, you have to remember hes writing directly about the thinking, feeling, human subject. Hes not writing about super natural phenomenon. Forgiveness is a real achievable thing, even for the most abhorrent of crimes, whether you belive that internal self forgiveness comes from god or comes simply from chemical reactions in your brain is irrelevant, the point is that its real.
