Have we reached the peak of modern civilization?

The laws of thermodynamics prevents us from making super efficient engines to travel to space cheaply enough to make it profitable for commercial exploration.

We're still using rocket technology made by Nazis in the 1940s which has a 50% chance of exploding before even lift off.

The laws of physics has a speed of light limit which prevents us from exploring most of our own galaxy, let alone the universe.

The laws of quantum mechanics and Heisenberg principle prevents us from harnessing the unlimited potential of the vacuum energy.

So besides the advances in how to make electrons go a bit faster in apps and computers every year and cut thousands of jobs in the process by automating everything, has civilization reached a technological stagnation point?

>The laws of physics has a speed of light limit which prevents us from exploring most of our own galaxy, let alone the universe
Wrong. You age less if you travel at close to c velocities

Is there one manic depressive making all of these doomsayer threads or several?

We went from feudalism to television, rockets, and computers in less than 10 generations.

Chill the fuck out. We're going as fast as we can.

Patience
We have AI coming up, there are breakthroughs all the time, its just not in the news because society is full of degenerates.
There is so much we don't know.
IMO i feel like we are focusing on things that are too big like the colonisation of outer space (mars in particular).
What did you expect, afterall everything we know now has been found out in the past 200 years or so for the most part, so its no secret that we are currently in a neutral time without anything major.
But we have a few things coming up, like AI.

But won't everyone you know on Earth age and die long before you return back?

>wanting to return
You can also take anyone you want with you if it matters so much

>50% chance of exploding before even lift off.
Hwhat?

muslims are everywhere

No... you age the same. But relative to people on Earth you age less.

Unless you're talking about actually travelling AT c, which is impossible.

Either it explodes or it doesn't , 50/50.

There is still plenty left to do.

>Cure aging
>Cure all diseases
>Gene therapy
>Understanding how to brain works
>interfacing with the brain
>Work on building AI that's actually intelligent.

I doubt we'll even be able to do half before the end of the century.

>I doubt we'll even be able to do half before the end of the century.
I disagree

Most of OP's points are things SOOO far in the future I couldn't give a dick about. Life extensions will help sure, but immortality, either nanomachines/regeneration/clone bodies/cyborrization/gene editing/mind uploading, is what we are after.

>Nuclear fusion is still advancing, but its fucking hard. ITER is a waste and was outdated in design before they even started laying concrete. Pretty much every other system is a "test" or "concept", never meant to burn a plasma or get to net-even power. Tokamak Energy is my pick right now.

>Unavoidable climate change. You think Europe looks bad? When we start loosing all ocean-side dry land, think of the worldwide migrants and GIMMEDATs. Top that with the actual weather getting fucked, ocean current changes, ocean acidification, top soil loss, aaaaand you have the downfall of civilization

>"AI WILL SAVE US!" AI is great at some very specific things like predictions and calculations, but its not going to say "build this to save yourselves" or "this is how cancer works". And the idea that AIs will build themselves faster and faster is bullshit too. youtube.com/watch?v=YXYcvxg_Yro

So what happens when we develope AI that can teach itself how to manufacture hardware to improve its own capabilities?

Just that. Just because it can improve itself doesn't mean it will start getting ambitions or gain a self preservation instinct.

No, but it will develope ways to improve its learning abilities, and doing so will improve exponentially, along with out knowledge.

underrated post

Read House of Suns.

Your level of thinking is extremely one dimensional.

>which has a 50% chance of exploding before even lift off

That's greatly overestimated.

I haven't done it, but I bet the launch to failure rate of production rockets is ~5 percent.

I recall some running at least 100 launches without a failure.

We can colonize our solar system with our tech (moons and Mars bases and stations around Jovian giants), which is awesome, and the only thing stopping us doing it quickly is shitty governments. We will do it eventually.

The Nazis probably would have been on Mars by now if Europe surrounded and the US stayed out of it. Shame about the Jews, though.... Nah, I'm kidding.

> shitty governments
You mean our shitty way of controlling the world through money. Currency is an outdated concept and needs to be replaced or abolished.

More like no one getting along, wasting money (work) of silly wars and armies for conquest, a lack of national cohesion leading to stronger individual countries which make the world stronger, wasting work to pay for socialist policies that pay for healthy people to stay out home and do nothing, and so on.

Money isn't the problem, it's how it's used; money is just work.

You are a child and a redditor. Stop visiting this website.

Can't wait when magic becomes reality.

Sure, It might take millions of years for your spaceship to travel, but for you the traveler it might only be a few decades.

What are you so sad about? It used to take 90 days to cross the Atlantic Ocean and people who left usually never saw the family they left again.

AI is being so overblown recently.
What they call AI is a neural network that can recognize pictures of cats... most of the time.
It most likely took a few Gigawatts of failing and 'evolving' to get it to this pathetic state.
If anything, they should call it Artificial Autism.

Just a chronic shitposter the mods refuse to ban

fuck off defeatist cuck, i wish your ancestors had the same frame of mind so that you wouldn't exist

>interfacing with the brain
>smart ai
We have those now though
Early stage, but functional

We have those in the same way cavemen had rocks.

>the very first prototypes in an entirely new field of science
>happens to not be very good
No shit sherlock

It's not even close to a prototype.
It doesn't 'learn' anything as the 'deep learning' meme would suggest.
It just fails, get a score and is replaced by a slightly different version to see if it does better.
It doesn't adapt to new things, it's just focused on one goal.
You can't even combine them in any meaningful way.
It's not intelligent at all.
It's actually a no brainer if you even know the basics of how real neurons work.
The complexity level is at least 3 orders of magnitudes more. And most Homo Sapiens are as dumb as my fucking cat.
It's just hyped because the nerds doing this shit want supercomputers to pursue this nonsense.

Our best hope is to discover another earth like planet close to our solar system.

think about it, when Europe discovered the New World there was a massive push to advance naval ships and navigation for colonization, and this eventually lead to the Enlightenment which made ground breaking discoveries in physics that helped mechanize the first world in the industrial revolution.

Discovering an entire new Earth would alter civilization forever and super accelerate space travel, even if this planet was many light years away scientist and nations would be jizzing their pants in hopes of colonization, we can see it now with Mars

I believe it is only a matter of time until we discover another earth like planet, and when we do it will fast forward us to a Type II Civilization

>returning to the Niggersphere

>I disagree with you
>child
Get laid fedora fag

Quite the opposite. One of the founders of D-wave (commercial quantum computing) said that he predicts by 2028 his computers will out perform any human at any given task. That includes designing quantum computers. Lets give him a bit more conservative estimate of 2040.
Let that sink in for a bit...
That means most people born after 1980 will live to see the day that computers replace literally every job on the planet, and perform those jobs several thousand times better than they have ever been performed before. You will see literally every disease, millennium problem, and most scientific hurdles overcome almost overnight. Assuming the machines dont destroy us all, after the first quantum comper strong AI is made the world wont even be recognizable to someone who was just waking up from a year long coma.

>>returning to the Niggersphere
Why the racism?

>said that he predicts by 2028 his computers will out perform any human at any given task.
That guy's a fucking retard.
>Lets give him a bit more conservative estimate of 2040.
You're a fucking retard.
>computers replace literally every job on the planet, and perform those jobs several thousand times better than they have ever been performed before
Could you be any more uninformed and reddit?
Get this into your thick skull, we are nowhere near an AI that can rival human intelligence, it's not even visible in the horizon. Anyone that says otherwise is extremely uneducated.
>inb4 neural networks

>founders of D-wave
>D-wave

top lel

D-wave has not demonstrated any results to date that cannot be explained by classical computation.

>You're a retard
Nice argument, I can tell you were on the debate team.

If someone claims 2+2=5, you're not going to debate this with them, because they're obviously retarded and not worth the time. Same concept here.
Stop talking about things you don't understand and read up on current AI research and what neural networks really are.

D-wave is a scam but you're being too pessimistic

With neural networks you could map a brain like structure and make a intelligent AI, both the brain and ANNs are Turing complete machines after all. The thing is that to do so you would need tons of computational power to proccess the billons of neurons required. So its basically just a raw computational power issue.

this meme needs to die. AI =/= deep neural networks

Do you have ANY idea what real AI and ALife researchers are investigating?

You think the bland, commercially adapted, RNN's/CNN's are state of the art in actual artificial cognition research?

More than that, are you literally so narrow minded that it does not occur to you to consider hybrid organic/digital models that include cultured neurons 'Artificial Intelligence'?
There are decades worth of research on cultured neural substrates paired with computational models, human/animal BCI's, and even a recent host of papers on BCI interconnected 'hiveminds' (currently trivial but encouraging). All of those are non-natural, constructed intelligences; research into them is advancing rapidly; in the next two-three decades any one of them could produce a genuinely 'artificial' intellect that is sentient.

It isn't even entirely your fault, silicon valley is hyping the 'deep learning' shit everywhere, and it IS useful and promising, but please use some critical thinking. The actual promising research gets shouted down by people like you being reactionary to overblown marketing, which is ironic considering those researchers (like me) agree that the things you complain about will not lead to real AI.

Deep neural networks is just a monkey that does tricks.

Shut up NIGGER

no

>Shut up NIGGER
Is the racism really necessary?

Welcome to Veeky Forums newfriend
Here are your complementary shitposts

lol

You greatly overestimate how far AI research is.

That wasn't me dude, I'm just saying your obviously so smart, calling someone retarded without stating any facts to correct them. You are the retard.

racism is funny

Get the fuck out back to where you came from, fucking chink nigger whitetrash spick chimp redneck.

Not . What do you research?

We are 2 keys away from unlocking something greater. That layered "not-learner" you deride? That's a generalization engine. That's the key to use different neural networks to generalize knowledge, to use patterns to discern other patterns.

That AI will probably say "Adios" as it leaves the planet and begins to mine the remainder of the Solar System for raw materials. The best part is that we'd have to acknowledge that we are incapable of competing with it as far as extraplanetary exploration goes.
