What is this board's consensus on faster than light speed travel again? I forgot.

its fast

Like sonic but slower

It's impossible to move faster than light, but you could move the space around you to go faster, it is still being debated if Warp drives could work or not as it would violate a lot of physic rules and our understanding on the universe.

Wally West once went a quadrillion times faster than light to save the earth from alien gambling fags.

Can we even move slower than light?

you can slow light down by shooting it through ice cubes but the effect is so negligible its impossible to detect

Theoretically nothing moves faster than light, but even light can't escape the event horizon of a black hole.

There is probably something out there that breaks our laws of physics and travels faster.

does light exist? i mean objectively speaking

Tachyons, which have negative mass, are able to move faster than light, but the result is they move backwards in time. It's probably impossible to make something with positive mass move faster than light.

Don't exist
Sorry to spoil your sci-fi fantasy

Concentrated dark matter, Y-y-you gotta trust me on this one user. There is drastic conciquenes if you try any other way user

Impossible as we know it, as was heavier than air travel/getting to the moon/etc.
>But those didn't violate laws of physics as we know them now!

Yeah and if we ever accomplished FTL revel it wouldn't break laws of physics as we would know them then.

It's impossible OP and it'll stay impossible until it's possible.

The difference is no one ever said flying or getting to the moon violated fundamental laws of physics.

Are you stupid? It has to cover more distance. Its not slowing down at all.

Would'nt moving the space around you requires gargantuan amounts of energy to the point where its no longer worth it.

How do we prove them and harness it ?

>Impossible as we know it, as was heavier than air travel
except that's fucking wrong
>what are birbs

>It's impossible OP and it'll stay impossible until it's possible.
>[math]A \wedge \neg A[/math]

It's not so much moving it as warping it.
The current idea was anihilating antimatter in front of the ship to generate an ungodly amount of energy (more than the equivalent mass expanded) that would bend space time and "pull" you forward from an exterior observer without actually breaking c from your referrential.
But yes, it'd require a big reserve of antimatter, the way for the genrated energy to not push the ship backwards and a way to accelerate to a meaningful fraction of c in the first place.

The theory works, we don't need unobatinium of negative mass like we used to think we did but we still need unobtainium for the technology to actually do it.

Finally, a warp drive theory thats not into this negative mass bull crap but good luck getting all of that antimatter.

The only thing in the universe that is faster than light is brighter light.

That theory's been around for a while now, just like the mars terraforming plans.
And it's really not that hard to understand if you already know the common vulgarisation of the space time model in 3d.
The subject is just a huge meme, so pople let lots of bullshit fly around.

But yeah, good luck making that fly. I wouldn't be so much worried about the antimatter but how much energy we need on the other side of the ship to accelerate to >50%c while being pushed backwards by constant anihilation.

The consensus is that matter cannot travel faster than light only light can travel as fast as light and or space. This however does not prevent someone from traveling at a distance outside of that speed faster to point B then it would take for light to travel to it. It sounds contradictory but it is not. Sort of like every bug is an insect but not every insect is a bug. An object can arrive at Proxima Centauri in a shorter amount of time than it would take light to get to Proxima Centauri without violating relativity. Key word being arrive not travel.

Rick pls go.
