Phrasing

Actually laughed

I'm curious because I never actually read that book. Is it genuinely racist or does it just have an unfortunate title? The Wikipedia article makes it seem like the latter.

There's certainly a racial dimension, but it's Conrad.
it's race-as-a-device-to-examine-man-and-the-world-of-men sort of proto-existentialism.
it starts off seemingly racist then perceptively turns into something larger and deeper

Despite what a certain African novelist might tell you, Conrad isn’t actually racist. Neither is Agatha Christie, despite the fact that she named her best-selling novel Ten Little Niggers.

I'd say it depends on your definition of racism. Today, the word nigger has a different meaning than it did in the late 1800s - it's used as an insult, while in Conrad's time, it was perfectly acceptable - so the book and others containing the word shouldn't be dismissed as racist just because of it.

Regardless, some of Conrad's books do touch upon racial issues which would raise eyebrows today, but l still wouldn't call them racist. There are plenty of those issues in his writings, but they never take center stage. He does write about race, but it's usually a stepping stone to something else.

You're talking about Achebe, right? I've never read him, but l keep hearing he had beef with Conrad. Can l get the lowdown on what his deal is?

saying cringe is the actual cringe

my teen sister and her friends use it all the time, it's horrible to hear. i think it replaced "awk sauce" that they were using for a while there

It's horrible to hear because it makes you realize you're a loser who posts reddit memes.
