The thing about literature is that history gradually throws the shit out and keeps the good stuff. So good books are constantly being released, but reading them rather than older stuff puts you at a much bigger risk of wasting time on shit.
So I'm thankful to you for sifting through the bullshit for the future generations, but I'd honestly rather not.

But the "pre-sifting" is often done for you, either by journals, or awards, or reviews. If you have ideological concerns you can pick and choose from a variety of literary sources. The experience of finding new "good" books is exhilarating.
