Why do Americans pay for college?

why do Americans pay for college?

I don't know. My country offers scholarships to damn near everyone and the quality of the education is about as shitty as it gets. Because apparently the way to create domestic advanced industries is to increase the number of STEM graduates by letting standards fall through the floor. I literally knew a guy who was in 2nd year mech E and didn't have a clue what a fucking cosine is. Just some shit to plug and chug.

Rich daddy shouldn't be a factor if it comes to education. The same amount of applicant will get in, nothing's gonna be watered down, and those smart enough to get into top tier schools but poor families will not have to settle for cheaper/free options. If anything, quality of students would improve if tuition wasn't a thing.

Colleges are expensive but we can't pay for them by taxing the wealthy (jerb creators) because then the wealthy won't have the money to create jobs and anyway why should anyone who isn't interested in going to college be paying for other people's kids to go? That ain't American, friend.

TLDR: Americans pay for college because America won't.

and how much would each american be paying?

im assuming youre a libertarian. you would argue the same applies for kids schools right? people without kids shouldnt be paying for other peoples kids.

desu i think if that education is free. if people have an attitude to education being free being right, then university should be free too within constraints.

>Germany
It's Why there are no a German version of "Ivy League". All German universities have roughly the same level & prestige.
>France
That's why the level of the French Grandes Écoles has declined over the years.
>East Europe.
Since the fall of Soviet Union/Warsaw Pact most of scientists fled to USA. The level declined since then.
>UK
Paid in UK, partially covered by tuition.
>Overall
Except UK & Switzerland most of Europe universities can't even compete with USA.
How can Europe even compete?

...

in uk its not partially covered, its all student loans that everyones eligible for and the majority of the loan never really gets paid back.

should also note that before 1997 it was free

Someone's gotta pay those humanities and liberal arts professors.

There's a more-graduates-than-jobs issue anyway so university should be made more exclusive

I wish I was an Amerifat

>wealth being the criterium
uh, no

you get what you pay for

Because rich people cannot stand to see their children go to a lesser school or god forbid, a polytechnic. So the rich people, who we all know, have all the power in the US, made universities pay to play.

because they not socialistic fuck

Public universities in the US are on the (very) slow path to becoming free. However private schools have too much power and nobody wants to cap their tuition.
Just imagine if the U.S. government says they will now foot the bill for all private uni tuition. Any dean worth their salt would respond with skyrocketing their school's cost of attendence.

Why do taxpayers pay for other people's higher education in Europe?

Because they live in the same country.

I'm starting to think that America is made up of all the autistic people from Europe that couldn't live together with other people. That's why they left. Because they were in search of a place were they could be 100% alone because they such serious assburgers that they cannot ever function properly in a civilized manner with other people.

Also explains why American kids have such high rates of assburgers.

Reason to pay for other people's investment "Because they live in the same country".

That is no reason for forcing people at gun point to give money up to the government to give random people a free higher "education" degree.

I'm not even American, I'm Australian. I do agree though that the government should give loans for people to pay University tuition.

It's just an extension of the same reason why per-tertiary education is free.

>why do Americans pay for college?
because the population was brainwashed into thinking tax money is better spent bombing goat farmers in third world shit holes.

>That is no reason for forcing people at gun point to give money up to the government to give random people a free higher "education" degree.
>"education"

I think this is the modern problem with free education, not only in the US but everywhere in the world. A lot of taxpayers simply do not value education and that is part their fault and part the fault of the government and universities.

It is your fault because I think everyone has to be able to see the value in having your country not run out of doctors, engineers, scientists, teachers, and experts in other areas.

But it is the fault of the government that free education also would entail giving people free money to get degrees in inter dimensional gender studies, and I think no one can see the value in that shit.

Where I come from the public universities are completely subsidized by the government. You can see the salaries online because of transparency and professors earn a lot of money. The president of the university earns literally almost as much as the united states president. Yet, tuition is literally 20 dollars per semester. Obviously all that money is coming from taxpayers.

Anyways, obviously I am happy that I get to study mathematics basically for free here but then I see the other side of the coin: the humanities department. Here every humanities professor is a fucking communist in disguise. I know because even I have to take certain classes in their department to graduate and the entire class was about how imperialism is bad and how the united states and capitalism are disgusting pigs. Basically, they taught socialism and communism was the best. And this would be harmless but the thing is that because professors have so many students, these students do protests all the fucking time. Violent protests, I mean like throwing rocks to police and shit. This happens all the fucking time. A bunch of communist students protesting against the government that pays their tuition.

Why don't we just get the le segret bolice to force professors to work in gulags?

that's one theory, another theory is that it was all the people who rejected the established system and strived to mold their own destiny

What's really sad is that there's not much in college that just can't be taught in high school. Obviously there are way too many majors to fit into a normal high school but think about this - high school goes to age 18 in America while other countries often graduate at 16. We also send our kids to school early. Usually around six while some countries it's around age nine. And yet while other countries have kids learning two+ foreign languages and a legit world history and calculus, most universities are still working on teaching kids algebra for the first time at age 19-20. The first two years are basically high school if not all four. Meanwhile there are plenty of kids who can do way better. I had all but one social and half a science credit after only two years but I was still forced to go all four years of high school.

I don't even have a actual point I just wanted to say a bunch of really depressing things about the US. We are so fucking far behind and yet we seem to insist on disregarding our own abilities even more. Why a high school student would not be able to have an associate's at least upon graduation is ridiculous.

Essentially we've built a massive pay wall and lop off another four years of our youth's youth. So many people are working through college there's no time for any fun. We're sending kids out into the world with next to no education and massive debt at age 22, and next to no life experience. A 22 year old should have some fuckin wisdom but at this point we have 30+ year olds who are just fuckin lost.

But we're gonna keep voting Republican until we're boiled alive I suppose

>Had scholarship
>Muh depression
>Went to university counselor to see if I could just set up a schedule to vent with them once a week I mean it's not like they're doing anything anyway it's their job.
>Too much of a liability if I killed myself on their campus
>So they kicked me out
>Depression worsens
>Have done jack shit and never finished my degree despite on-again-off-again attempts while being homeless for one of them.
>Finally getting back into the wing of things and go for a summer term to mentally prepare for the fall.
>Pay four housing.
>Guidance counselor won't release me for classes.
>School policy won't let me just register, have to wait on her.
>She's not there for the summer term.
>She emails me about it, gets a response within an hour, and emails me back four days later after I can no longer register for the term despite me telling her I was going for the summer term two months in advance and she never released me for registration.
>Am no on campus but cannot attend any courses (for credit)
>Go to cancel housing
>No refunds because you waited four days
>Even though you were waiting because of our staff being unresponsive
>Pay $2,000 to sit in a dorm room and not get any class credit for a month.

I think I'm finished with trying to get a degree.

>I think I'm finished with trying to get a degree.
good
need more slave wage cucks anyways.

oh fuck off, you had yours for 8 years, go cry a river

>But we're gonna keep voting Republican until we're boiled alive I suppose

yeah because gun right, Jesus, and socialism is evil /sarcasm

>East europe

Russian engineering students are top tier, they also have way more advanced math than american engineers

Because it is good, so poor people value their education is a very beautiful dialectic mode, is a sample of why the United States is the most powerful nation that has engendered society.

>people don't value things they don't pay for

agree to disagree

What does Veeky Forums think of the british system? Are the student finance loans just as bad as the american system?

i dont think so. you dont even have to pay them back. it isnt the same as another debt desu.

Yeah that's what I thought, I was afraid there was some kind of catch at first because it seemed a bit too good to be true. You can essentially get into some of the best unis in the world (oxbridge; imperial), finish your degree and not pay a dime to them. You also get the employer reputation of those top unis which would be lacking from most mainland european universities, even if their teaching is just as good. So it's kind of the best of both worlds, both great reputation and more or less free, is there an argument against studying in britain? Apart from having to live in britain, I mean.

Just work hard in high school and you can get free college through scholarships. I did alright in high school and still got good enough scholarships to take out $20k in loans, which is easily paid off with EE.

>trickle down economics
>in 2017
>on Veeky Forums of all places
Kindly neck yourself.

>paying for joe schmoe and hoebo to go to college for some shitty, useless degree
I am all for donating to college scholarship funds for specific degrees, but having to pay all students is ridiculous. I dont want my money going to some interpretive dance major

well you do pay from your income when u get a certain salary but its not pressuring or big or anything. most people will not pay it all back; gets wiped off after a certain time.

not really. britains quite expensive and the loans are only for brits. internationals have to pay twice or 3 times the brit loan.

But look at the drawbacks to not allowing the economically disadvantaged easy access to further education. You end up with an unaspiring lower class that takes over unskilled labor which continues the cycle for their children. A strong indicator for the economic success for a child is heavily correlated with the success of their parents. It's a system that ensures the poor stay poor. Why would you ever give tax breaks for the upper class? It doesn't even need to be extra money from them, it could just be proportional to what most Americans pay in taxes.

>/sarcasm
You have to go back

Cuz' we're better thand you

This. Everyone complains about how we have to pay such insane tuition and housing, but another major cost is schools that have fallen for the SJW narrative forcing everyone to take liberal arts and "diversity" courses.

Because not enough people are interested in those departments for them to get willing students.

New Zealanders pay for university as well
The question you should be asking is why Anglosphere universities are superior to yurocucks unis in general??!

I'm from an EU country and got a student loan from UK govt...

cause every country has some cuck fetish

well eu's different, i cba to bring that into it because its always complicated. e.g. in scotland, eu students free, uk students 9k a year. guessing you dont get a maintenance loan.

I live in Romania, Eastern Europe and university is free. I'm studying EE at the best university in Bucharest(the capital city) and the only reason I didn't go to study in the UK is lack of money. You can always get a student loan, but the living costs are just too big for my family to afford. They can hardly provide for me here. I was the best at math in my county. I had stupid classmates during high school that got into Cambridge and Imperial only because their parents were rich. I fucking hate my situation and I hope that it will change soon.

My high school valedictorian's a poorfag, but he was really talented, my high school's an "Eton college" tier school, he was on scholarship and he's still on scholarship and now studying in University of Cambridge in Physics, apparently he admires people who were there like Issac Newton and wants to be like one of them, kid has big dreams.

>You end up with an unaspiring lower class that takes over unskilled labor which continues the cycle for their children.
It's gonna be hilarious when robots finally take over all lower paying jobs and America is suddenly 60% unemployed.

What country?

Americans are such good slaves that they only educate if it makes their bosses good money, so they fear their boss losses money because some guy wants to study something "useless" ( aka interesting and not for jewdrones)

"irony" plis user

yet they make worse engineers

hmmmmmm

What did he mean by this?

Western universities are built upon classic Latin liberal arts education, focused on building worldly, well rounded individuals who can not only think critically but also express themselves. You don't want your graduates going around and not knowing who Aquinas was or what Aristotle thought of comedy, because it is a sign that they are uncultured and unaware of the wider world they navigate. This was, of course, before the US government hijacked higher education to feed the military industrial complex by granting generous endowments to research facilities that give STEM fags an unmerited and unparalleled sense of arrogance. It's a shame that many professors have politicized their classrooms but liberal arts are just as important for a student's education as physics and mathematics.

Liberal arts courses are fine, I agree that you shouldn't get out of uni without knowing a bit about classics/philosophy or at least how to write a paper like someone who isn't retarded.

Political circle jerk classes forced on students because the dean caved to SJWs, on the other hand, should be abolished unless people actually want to take them.

If by funny you mean a riot that will have irreparable consequences, then yeah lol xd

Seeing neoconservatives become defensive about their universal gibs will be pretty hilarious though

user, those pools, fraterneties and sports arent going to pay themselves. Plus most universities are for profit too!

Leftists conspire to keep the cost of education high with the hope of keeping the population ignorant.

The reason why there is no German Ivy League is because most of the science isn't done at Universities. Most of the prestige comes from the science stuff done there and not from the quality of teaching.
