I wanted to read Dubliners, Portrait, and Inferno before Ulysses, of which I still haven't finished the latter. Once I'm done with inferno I'll get around to it.

would be nice to have read portrait after inferno, way more important to the context of portrait than ulysses, if at all. but its ok I guess
Too late, unfortunately. I'm already done Portrait. Which to be honest I found relatively disappointing, there were some highlights, but also some strong low lights. This may have been why I was slightly discouraged from getting to Ulysses too quickly

oh, I see. i personally enjoyed portrait quite a lot and ulysses even more. I can see very well why some people might not enjoy portrait though, but don't get discouraged by that, its a completely different novel

How is Inferno necessary
I didn't say it was necessary, I just want to. I'm sure reading Portrait isn't necessary either, but it (according to friends/peers whose opinions I respect) will bolster the experience.
not 'necessary' but in portrait of the artist the father 'sermon' is heavily influenced/inspired/based on dante's inferno
