Is it better to be a specialist or a generalist?
Is it better to be a specialist or a generalist?
it's probably best to not concern yourself with labels. As long as you have the required knowledge for a particular job or application, you're good to go, if not, you're not.
Better in terms of what?
>Is it better to be a specialist or a generalist?
You should know logic and set theory like the back of your hands.
Then you can go about learning whatever you like.
Which logic?
Isn't set theory usually studied as a topic of mathematical logic?
>Which logic?
Introduction to Mathematical Logic (Elliott Mendelson).
>Isn't set theory usually studied as a topic of mathematical logic?
Yes, it is.
But there's more set theory that just the one exposed in logic textbooks.
>Is it better to be a specialist or a generalist?
for what purpose?
Depends on you cunt, would you rather be a family medicine doctor or a cardiologist?
Why not both? This is a weird dichotomy.
You should *want* to be good at everything, but that doesn't mean you can't specialize in some things, too.
A knife pointy enough will always stab through armor.
Who are you trying to convince with such a stupid fucking analogy?
I kinda agree with him
What makes you say that?I know logic smart theory but vaguely what am I missing?
The west takes it as common knowledge...
in a stable enviroment, it is better to specialize, to be better at a specific task, compared to the competition.
in an unstable enviroment, it is better to generalize, since you will be able to better adapt to change.
Since we live in a rather stable world (at least in the west), i would say it is better to specialize
This is what capitalists actually believe.
But yeah don't concern yourself with labels
A hammer large enough will always crush bones.
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.
-Robert A. Heinlein
I'm a retard and I can't do half of those things.
-Robert A. (((Heinlein)))
Depends on the task at hand, but generalists with a high IQ will be able to find relationships between subjects which might lead to a pretty good discovery of the inner functions of the Cosmos.
>A human being should be able to build a wall
Hola Mr. Presidente. Can me get Green carta?
I cannot wait for genetic or cybernetic brain enhancements that increase the rate of learning and the amount of info one can manage at the same time. Becoming a generalist with the expertise of an specialist.
Life will change radically for humanity.
Then truly the greatest weapon of all is the explosion that burns brightly yet shortly.
:3
>tfw when I am very close to being the perfect human by some Jew, Chosen one standards
I am feeling fucking kosher today
A generalist with a sizeable array of specialist colleagues.
If you want to be a leader - a generalist. If you want to be esteemed in your field of interest, a specialist.
>not being a general specialist
Brainlets get out
>not being a special generalist
>program a computer
that computer would not exist without specialization
Anything since the 20th century = specialist
anytime before that in history = generalist
a) If you can pick the right specialty, it's better to be a specialist.
b) If you can't decide which is the right specialty, it's better to be a generalist.
Q : How do I pick the right specialty?
A : That is indeed the Hard Question.
Depends on your personality. Do you want to be able to understand everything you read, or discover something nobody else knows?
