Geology

Any geology bros here? I just switched my major because environmental science has very little science at all. Geology seems like a better bet.

What kind of careers are available, outside of petroleum? Anyone know about glaciers, environmental geology, or surveying?

Also post cool rocks and minerals I guess

>tfw wanted to study geology
>found out I was hopelessly colorblind
Those slides still give me nightmares.

...

I'm a Remote Sensing guy, and of all the fields I work alongside, Geologists are the the most bro-tier.

Thanks for talking NASA into launching the first LANDSAT and creating my field of study bros

>very little science at all
You take that back

paleofag here. (pic related: it's a trilobite pygidium from some of my research.)
just spent a big chunk of the afternoon grading labs by intro students who mistake halite for galena and can't tell augite from k-spar.

the various geological surveys (USGS + state orgs) need people, but it's a fairly small job market and I dunno what demand is like. that's probably your best bet if you like the surveying/monitoring/fieldwork side of things, unless you want to do academia instead.
other options include: ore geology, conservation paleoecology, hydrology.

Make sure you specialise

I think you made a good decision to switch from environmental science. One of my geology professors used to own an environmental consulting firm; he told me that instead of hiring three environmental scientists, he would rather one chemist, one biologist, and one geologist.

Take GIS and remote sensing classes if you have the option. Those skills can apply to almost any field of geology. Also hydrology is a growing field, as stated.

What is your academic background? Are most RS jobs in government? I visited EROS Center this year and was fascinated

Just at my college at least, I would have to take a few environmental-specific credits and then only like 12 supporting science credits....it's called environmental "studies" so maybe not the same as environmental science at a bigger college

>students who mistake halite for galena and can't tell augite from k-spar.
Damn user that sucks. I would love to do paleo but the job market worries me. Is there a big market for fossil preservation (when accidentally dug up by mining)?

>tfw geochemistry postgrad
>tfw GIS trained
>tfw field work followed by map making
/comfy/
Now all I gotta do is convince my supervisor to replace his broken ICP-MS with a LA-ICP-MS so I don't have to fuck around with sample digestion.

...

>environmental science has very little science at all.
Environmental Sciences nowadays is more about Politics & Sociology. The social impacts of Pollution. Political ways to preserve nature. Using very little math & a few dumb amount of Chemistry & Biology.
Environmental Sciences should be rooted in more hard sciences which uses more math as Geophysics, Chemical Engineering & Applied Math (to model climate in more precise & accurate way with computers)

not much of a market for fossil prep outside of museums, and that's a very small job market. there's some demand for private collection, but that's not really science-y and I don't think there are that many openings.
if you want to make money off of paleo, you can try micropaleontology, using pollen or diatoms or graptolites etc. to do biostratigraphy. the petroleum industry is realizing that seismic data is only as good as the interpreter and that biostrat is a useful tool in correlating between wells, so they're hiring new professionals to replace the old guard. (there's a big age gap in the industry at the moment; there are old paleontologists near retirement, and there are some young guns, but there are relatively few mid-career paleontologists at oil companies right now.)

How do they confuse galena for halite? Do you think it's because of the geometry?

How is the job market for a BS in Geology w/ GIS certificates? I'm considering this route or CE while doing my basics atm

In my introductory Geology class and I'm honestly afraid I'm gonna fail. I can't classify rocks for shit.

tell me about ecologists
also hoe does a poor faggot with no institutional resource get into clandestine remote sensing

>geology
>literally rocks

enjoy poverty, dumbfuck

I did a geology and geophysics double major and currently work in a grocery store. Job market is brutal right now. Going back to college as an engineer to try and un-ruin my life.

>i have crippling debt from college and a job thay doesnt pay very much so im gonna go back to college and get even further in debt
Good luck with that, user

Did you go to graduate school? It really doesn't matter what you major in, if you only have a BS you're not really that competitive.

I guarantee working in resources pays more than whatever your pleb tier """career""" does

How much do you get paid to look at rocks, bucko?

Hey geology bros, is moldavite legit or is it new age woowoo bullshit?

>assuming he had debt to validate your worldview
bugger off

which healing crystal should i get if i want to balance my mood chakra?

Jessis christ maire theyre minerals

Petroleum tho, I would do it but I like academia

not op but try opal

...

Not , but Arizona State University created a free, command-line base remote sensing program called Davinci. They also have a wiki on its functions. It can do any operation that a $10,000 remote sensing program can, but its command line based. That being said, you may learn more about what the functions are actually doing.

Haha. new field of research: searching for meme analogues within petrographic thin-sections

it's because they're mostly first years and mostly non geo majors and don't give de la fuck

I'm a junior in geophysics in houston, i'm starting to get worried about job prospects because every geophysics job opening i look up says either a masters or phd minimum is needed, that and 5+ years of work exp in your subspecialty.

is this even worth it if i'm going for a bachelors?

What do you actually want to do with geophysics degree? I'm not knocking it, but it seems like most people who would get a bachelors in geophysics already plan to continue to ms or phd because it is such a specialized field.

Either way I wouldn't be too worried, the background in math and physics you will have counts for a great deal. Try broadening your search to jobs in petroleum geology or engineering geology, I've seen those require degrees in geophysics etc. Or just expect to have to relocate after you graduate.

junior in geology who's taken GIS/Remote sensing courses here.

How are there so many of you dumb fucks who expect a job in a science without at least a masters degree? if you dont suck cock you even get paid to go to masters school and TA. This is expected in just about any science field too. like fuck, im glad I dont need a fucking phd like i would for chem/physics.

I'm planning on studying petroleum geology in grad school and trying to get a job at an oil company some day. I'm studying in NY state and its amazing how many other geology students are against fracking and all want to go into environmental, which is gonna be fucked in a few years with our current president wanting to loosen environmental regulations.

the power comes from within friend, just pick a stone that has some character and appeals to you. When you want to change your mood, just focus on him.

I would pick something fun and cheap like a nice colorful calcite.

tfw finished my only paleo classes already
man those fossil hunting field trips were the best. I dug up and kept two trilobutts (pygidium) from one trip.
Im in structural now and its all just measuring elevation from road cuts to calculate stike/dip (with a dip of only like 0.24%) Paleo was the shit.

my university has "environmental studies" and it's just a bullshit liberal arts degree. not even close to a STEM degree.

>"junior in geology who's taken . . . Remote sensing courses here."
>"I'm planning on studying petroleum geology in grad school"

Thanks for the lengthy autobiography as well.

Yeah, fracking only gets ugly when the well engineers take shortcuts or management pushes projects too fast. Unfortunately that's the case most of the time, then anyone who relies on groundwater (agriculture, rural communities, even some municipalities) end up getting fucked over.
Otherwise hydraulic fracturing is one of the most beneficial technologies that came about in the 20th century.

Since your taking structural now i thought i would share this nice monocline with you

honestly there needs to be some kind of regulatory scheme to make operators do a proper survey of the area before they start fracking to make sure the reservoir doesn't communicate with groundwater or fault zones. do that and everything's good; fracking = cheap natgas = lower demand for coal = cleaner air

unfortunately the anti-intellectual roody-poos currently in charge are trying to prop up coal and doing everything they can to make sure that petroleum interests don't get their feelings hurt by actually having to do their due diligence.

>What is your academic background?
Masters in Remote Sensing, bachelors in Geography but I specialized in optical terrestrial RS and GIS in my undergrad. I've further specialized in vegetative RS since then.

>Are most RS jobs in government?
Depends where you live, there are private industry jobs aplenty if you are in the right area. The private RS industry is in its infancy but it's exploding right now thanks to outfits like Planet launching cubesats like a madcunt.

>biochemistry major senior
>know nothing about minerals or advanced properties of metals

s-should I take Inorganic Chemistry?

If you want to do chemistry then yea inorganic is important

If u want to know about rocks, just take a basic geology course

Geology degrees usually only require chemistry 1 and 2 for a decent understanding
Chemistry 2 is probably most important in regards to geology

I'm op, here's an example of my college's environmental studies catalog. There's basically no upper level science, and for some reason general anthropology or sociology are comparable to urban design, and environmental literature can be a stand in for soil science or remote sensing. It's a load of bullshit.

I'm done with my degree in August. Got a job as an intern at a technology firm because I have a science degree. I'll do it for a few months to save up enough to take my GRE and ditch them

not that guy but with an undergraduate degree I got offered $100,000 a year 4 months after I finished school. With more specialization it just goes up from there

>moldavite
>a fucking glass

My school offers one of those environmental studies ba programs too. They take classes about environmental ethics and do "research" on plastic waste. The sad thing is some of them actually believe they are studying science.

Did you do your Bachelors at UNT? by any chance?

I am biology, but had a geology prof for an elective. I thought it was funny their offices were in the basement of a building on campus.

Anyway, here is some fluorite and lapis I have.

Clearly you need to drink some of Dan Aykroyd's Crystal Vodka, filtered through mystikal Herkimer Diamonds! Whoooo ooooo oooo.

from a local museum

...

...

i always have a laugh at environmental sciences. Environments arent even real from a merological perspective, they are externalities that are left over when a system is abstractions.
like Adolf Hitler said, "we are like islands in the sea separate on the surface but connected in the deep"

id go into ecology or earth system sciences if you want science, your undergrad doesn't matter if you understand biology, are decent at statitics and using R and can remote sense and into GIS, you would be an ideal candidate for landscape ecology. If you do end up working for development/petrol be sure that you do your best to hide the wild from them, also be a whistle blower and leak critical information to academic researchers, the media, local people, black bloc anarchists, and assist them in the fight. please dont sell the world along with your souls.

REEEE someone give me a GIS job

Well, environments exist whether you accept it or not.
Also,
>Seriously quoting Hitler to back up a scientific claim.

Know any good intro to geology/GIS books?

Just go to your schools geography department and ask if you can download ArcGIS for free
Then do some online tutorials for it to learn.

For geology, honestly theres plenty of decent textbooks out there and they are all about as good. Just search for a geology 101 textbook or something.

If you want to learn more advanced shit then look into minerology/petrology/structural geology for the more specific and in depth subject books

>Well, environments exist whether you accept it or not
i accept that environments exist. What i am saying is environments are purely virtual and not part of the actual world. Environments are thirds, as such they emerge from a reciprocal interaction of actually existing physical things, and the mental representation of such things. Boundaries are arbitrarily drawn by the reductive and symbolic nature of the mind, and some take these for granted as actuality. Environments are real, but only as the virtual byproduct of abstracting a system.
and that quote was by William James

Environments are to biology as sociology is to psychology

Also you are extraordinarily autistic and english does not seem to be your first language

>Environments are to biology as sociology is to psychology
this post made me sad. I study ecology i focus the most on earthscape ecology, ecosystem science and ecological networks.
environments are what exists outside of the system being analyzed, i was trying to casually talk about ontology and mereotopology but i now see just what i am dealing with.
Keep it in mind that you have no idea what you are talking about, not just this in particular, but in general. If you want to know what you are talking about, tell me what you know. Then i will take the time and put together a rudimentary study guide.
>Environments are to biology as sociology is to psychology
this is ultracringe

>the study of the system vs the study of the individual

Im sorry you are autistic user
Go take your math degree back to your containment threads

I cant imagine being simple enough to dedicate my life to the study of rocks. How do academics trick themselves into this time sink

>implying rocks are simple

>implying the stuff and processes that Makes the earth isnt fucking interesting

>implying macro scale chemistry and physics isnt interesting and important

Geology can be as simple or complex as you want it to be depending on how in depth you get.
Plus rocks are fucking cool if you arent a boring normie who cant think about them in abstract ways

Not the guy you were talking about but I want to know more about ontology.
Also if you have any resources for how to present statistical data in peer reviewed papers, I'll take it.
Thank you for your efforts in educating others.

What?

He fell for the philosphy and academia jews

I graduated in may and got a job in environmental geo and just quit for another job as a geophysicist making 35% more. Where do you live man?

i make 55k a year base salary and I just graduated. I have no kids and no mortgage. I'm rly enjoying my life atm.

realgar, put it up your AsS

This one, to distribute to the vibes to your charka effectively, thus allowing you connect to a higher plan of the earth sprite, crush it into a fine powder dissolve into a liquid solution and put it UP YOUR ASS, it helps if you have a friend playing stairway to heaven on his shackashuri near by.

...

>telling an user to shove an arsenic solution up his ass

please stop trying so hard

I'm a programmer without any formal education other then a Phd but I find geology fascinating and do you know why because it rocks!

rocks are overrated
soils are better

I respect soil science but rocks are still superior. Too much biology involved with soils for my taste

Now sediment i can get behind

Did you thrash around like the kid from Little Miss Sunshine?

>arsenic
only the first guy said anything about arsenic
i, being the later two posts, recommended that user swallow a solution of MDA with his unholy tunnel. This is something i recommend to everyone almost immediately after i meet them.
Dont get suckered into paying for sass, molly or any other drug for that matter, simply state that you wish to put it in your asshole. the law of the land is "if you boof it, its free"

>Any geology bros here?
Maybe it will interest you:

In Tengrism we got a universe of mythological entities, one of them is a particular mountain.
Now, most religions people study and invest a lot of time in something I consider mostly disrooted from the physical reality.
What do you think of the idea studying Tengri mountain just for the religious purpose of worship?

I did a bit.
On my way I realized that a vast array of scientific concepts are being learned on the way.
Now why a religious archetype such as a mountain and why Tengri mountain? One because natural phenomena such as mountains have hammered themselves into our nervous system and therefore it can be predicted that they will be important perceptional resources for many years to come, even if we set out into space... and two we work with the archetypes that have accumulated as more important in our tied to the physical reality religion intuitively thus I guess its resource friendly.
What do you think of that?
youtube.com/watch?v=UE7u3CvlPnE

>Geology seems like a better bet
should have gone with the sub-set of civil engineering called Geotechnical Engineering.

Geology is also shit, just like environmental science.

>Geology is shit
bachelors degree detected
MS/PhD in geology is god tier you fucking mong

Can you please say this in a more simplified way? I dont understand your point. Also what kind of mountains are we talking about?

Are you the OP? Or the one of the guys following me trying to discredit the validity? You have to understand in Turkey we right now have a very tense political environment and many people are really super triggered about my endeavor.

No im not OP or involved enough to care

I really just didnt understand what you were talking about. Im down with worshipping mountains and shit tho

[spoiler] >roach

So you think people mythologized mountains in general because they have some sort of great value unbeknownst to humanity thus far? Maybe people deified mountains because they're fucking massive and impressive?

Also what the hell is a perceptional resource? I'm not anti spirituality at all but you're not making lots of sense

Tengrism is celestial deism having developed mutually dependent with Turkdom, you have to know that religion applied for the environment it is formulated to be applied in, is generally a good concept because it is tied to actual realities, also displaying the state of the art of the sciences of the time and geography.
Only with time the written dogma diverges from the reality, the state of the art of the sciences and becomes less applicable often to a point it becomes very toxic.
Tengrism has only a very slim lightweight Dogma, and it's mainly an oral tradition, so it changes according to the necessities. Tengrism being an oral tradition and having developed mutually dependent with Turkdom, it also shaped the language, its syntax, the philosophical approaches... and so on, the experiences the individual tribes made on their ways exploring the world accumulated in Turkdom: Thus a large pool of mythological entities, approaches, words... all of these cultural values developed. None of these have universal validity, but are seen as a tool set.
Some of these mythological entities are more present than others, some are limited to only a few tribes, or maybe even to individuals only, because that's how life is like, some experiences are individual to you, some thoughts... and so on, others are being shared on a wider basis.

The most shared mythological entitiy is Tengri, whose symbol is the celestial sphere.
For example one only limited to a single tribe might a certain sub-species totem animal.
One of the most commonly shared is Tengri mountain, very important symbol, I don't know exactly why, some tie origin myths onto it... I don't care that much:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khan_Tengri
Now since we got that pool of mythological entities, that have accumulated in direct relation to the natural, wild environment it's the perfect basis for scientific study.
Totem animals can be studied religiously, the most common and shared by almost everyone is the grey wolf, and some lesser common ones shared only by singular tribes are sub species of certain birds... see where this is going...
Now Tengri when studying Tengri mountain, and I tired this, I saw I came across a vast array of scientific concepts, I need to learn in order to understand the mountain better, it's worshipping...
Like this we have neutralized a lot of religious traps, polluting the minds and instead tied it directly to science like it has been when people depended on Tengrism.

>Maybe people deified mountains because they're fucking massive and impressive?
Yes, it still holds true.
That's great.
>Also what the hell is a perceptional resource?
What you just said. Mountains are imprinted into our nervous system, since the time eyes exist to recognize them they have accompanied us.

>Maybe people deified mountains because they're fucking massive and impressive?
Yes, it still holds true.
That's great.
>Also what the hell is a perceptional resource?
What you just said.
Mountains are deeply imprinted into our nervous system, since the time eyes exist to recognize them they have accompanied our thinking.
>So you think people mythologized mountains in general because they have some sort of great value...?
They do, right?
Some you can get for example ores out of for people to make iron for swords. People do that for quite some time now. Everything people connote with the particular entity (especially when it increases survival likelihood) is reason for worship.

NNNNEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRDDDDDDDDDDDDSSSSSSSSSSSS

SHUT THE FUCK UP ECONOMICS MAJORS

Is it considered selling your soul to go into petroleum?

Of course not, only bitchy little faggots get worked up about "muh god, you sellout working for oil".

Only the environmental geologist fags complained about the oil industry and how bad it is for the earth, stay away from those faggots because those are the type of people who are limp wristed and wouldn't be able to hack it in the first place if they worked in the oil industry.

I know nothing about geology but I just wanted to chime in and say thanks for a decent thread on Veeky Forums.

Tfw those limp wristed faggots make up all of your undergrad classmates

Im not even who you replied to but holy fuck, there are a lot of enviro-cucks in geology. Guess that means less competition to worry about

I love lemon jelly

yeah well I once crushed some samples taken from Tengri for a study on ocean anoxic events.
what you gonna do about THAT?

Rocks never die
The grains get finer and the materials get rycycled

Thread cant die either

Anything Radioactive will give off the most "energy," I suggest getting some Torbernite

BOOM
Moon rock!
