Hey Veeky Forums first time visiter here and had a question for you. What is the sole purpose of a virus? Is it just simply to kill or does it actually have a place on earth?

>purpose
heh...nice spook, kiddo

A successful virus is one that can reproduce without killing it's host. The common cold is very successful. It "survives" by filling a similar niche to the mosquito. Viruses that kill the fuck out of people tend to run out of hosts and die out or go dormant for a while.

there's no purpose for a virus. it just is.

What do you mean that viruses have no purpose? They clearly have their niches they exist in. They are clearly suited to do specific things and they do those things rather than other things. Of course they have a purpose.

>reproduce
This. Organisms exist to reproduce. Viruses are no different, though whether or not they are organisms are up for debate.

/thread

Not that they exist to reproduce so much as it is that those that reproduce effectively tend to continue to exist

what is the purpose of humans?

>They clearly have their niches they exist in. They are clearly suited to do specific things and they do those things rather than other things.
Yes. But what does that have to do with purposes?

>purpose
*SO* sick of normal ppl

Nothing has a "purpose" you dumb cunt. It just lives and propagates, there is no reasoning or "design" to it, just like we do.

The only purpose of living organism is to survive and pass down their genes whatever means necessary.

> virus
>lives
>living organism
>survive

Viruses are simply not considered living because they need a host to reproduce. Definitions are arbitrarily defined and with just a simple change of words my more general point about living things would still apply to viruses

If you HAD to impose teleology on nature, horizontal gene transfer is probably your best bet.

But why would you want to?

You're not even good at being pedantic. There is no consensus on whether viruses should be considered alive or not.

>what is the sole purpose of a gipsy? Is it just simply to kill or does it actually have a place on earth?

What do you think the purpose of human is?
Is it just simply to fuck the environment up or does it actually have a place on earth?

What is the purpose of a rock? The only differece is thar viruses can replicate themselves if they are in the right context. The same happens with "living" thing, they (we) just have a major capability of replicability than viruses generally speaking. The rest of charachteristics of a living organism and a virus (I'm not going to enter in that battle now) are a result of those replicability.

this is becuase viruses will inject a dna sequence into your dna
which sounds like evolution within the organisms lifetime.

>what is the purpose of life

>What is the purpose of [organism]

If you ever find yourself uttering these words, you need to go over natural selection again.

How does natural selection explain the purpose of living beings?

If the world has taught us anything, it's that if it can exist, it will exist.

It doesnt. It suggests the process on HOW organisms change over time through minor variants between generations. WHY they do that isnt explained, best see a priest or something, or admit that "nobody knows for sure".

No metabolism = Not living, also no protein production system

Weed out the competition.
Naturally selecting the most able/ healthiest.
Killing the least healthy / less able.
Buy this way, Natural selection promotes Evolution.

>Buy this way...
*By this way...

parasitoid wasps also require hosts to reproduce. Are wasps not considered living?

They are using you as a factory to reproduce themselves;

"There is a steady process by which viruses of various sorts splice themselves into the genomes of their hosts, and this is part of the adaptive strategy of viruses that they are able to hedge their bets by sticking themselves into a genome and hanging around for awhile and then popping out, at a point which might be advantageous to them but inconvenient for their host.

However, it's a dangerous strategy because sometimes they stick themselves into parts of genomes that never get transcribed, and they never get out."

>First time visitor here
Nigga fuck off, you posted this thread last week or something.

Easy there buddy

>purpose
>organism
Viruses are byproducts of cell existence. They are just the random stones that fits a keyhole.

Don't listen to these faggots, Viruses were engineered by silicon-based lifeforms and sent to earth to destroy us. Pretty obvious when you think about it.

pointless post

t. butthurt brainlet who doesnt understand high school biology

Viruses r gud bois who dindu nuffin. Calling them not alive is rassist, shitlords.

t. virgin highschooler

they're not silicon based though, and silicon is a shitty element for life anyway as it is not very reactive

its a meme you dip

Define purpose, prove that a virus both has a purpose and that it is unique, then ask your stupid question.
