Flat earthers

Ok, i`m kind of out of the loop with this, are flat earthers serious? It seems like a giant LARP to me from people that think they are trolling or something.

it was a big joke until about a few years ago. kind of an exercise in questioning previously unquestioned beliefs and exploring the limits of logic and reason in a fun way

then people on youtube starting picking it up. there's a lot of people who are inherently distrustful of any kind of authority - think 9/11 truthers, shit like that. they look at scientific authorities telling them the earth is round and say "well that can't be right then".

it also doesn't help that the earth is just. SO large. that humans cant really grasp the scale. it's hard to argue with someone who looks out a window and sees something that might as well be flat at any scale relevant to their life. there's also a failure to understand the physics involved

Most of it is people just fucking around.
A small part of it is idiots who don't know that and think they're part of an inside know

I forgot how the saying goes.
But basically if regular people pretend to be idiots for long enough, they'll be joined by actual idiots who think they're in good company.

I don't understand how willfully ignorant people can be

you can literally take a lens with a narrow focal length, and under the causeway bridge on lake Pontchartrain you'll be able to see the curvature, you don't even need to the lens, it just helps

How do flat earthers explain the great circle in navigation?

...

they think when you circumnavigate the globe, you're really just going around the bottom of the disk

they really do believe that Antarctica is hundreds of thousands of miles in diameter, and that you can't go up to the continent because government boats will stop you

...

>they really do believe
Poe's Law

We can't be sure just what they believe, but yeah, I'm sure there are some true believers.

this video was actually uploaded by a "flatearther" who owns a p900

this thread is just
>I have never been at sea

you only know it when you see it first hand and then you realize how stupid everyone is

I love how he zooms back like he realizes that his world view just got crushed and he needs to find a good excuse.

The majority of flat earthers are memesters playing a joke, but a small percentage, growing constantly, are paranoid schizophrenics

You guys obviously haven't seen the proof

THE EARTH IS FLAT, And this video proves it

This is gold.

>stay flat

they already got around that. they reinvented the 'law of perspective' to make it so things dispensary bottom up on a flat plane. according to them, flat planes look like the surface of a sphere.

i didn't think it could get more retarded than this, folks.

Whenever I see a flat earth thread i just post this video.

youtube.com/watch?v=uexZbunD7Jg

It never gets any replies for obvious reasons.

What is the basic motivation for all that? The desperate attempt of being smarter than the rest?

It's a conspiracy by the government, they've employed numerous people to gaslight on their behalf. They are doing this for two ultimate purposes, the first is to weed out absolutely insane people who actually believe it and make society single them out and avoid them, thus removing them from the gene pool, and the second is to increase the amount of critical thought that society does, which will happen as people challenge the gaslighters. Another bonus is that it gives you a lot of people to argue with, which provides entertainment for many.

DO NOT FEED
Report, hide and move on
Sage goes in every field.

its because they're failures. maybe not all of them, but i would wager that many of them have failed at society in some way. thus, by proving society "wrong" in some respect, then they can prove they haven't actually failed.

flat earthers probably failed at school or something. thus, they have committed themselves to proving "the scientists" wrong about something fundamental. Usually academic failures just denounce the school system at large. you'll see a lot of videos on youtube dissing the school system for not teaching "creativity". or something like that.

failures in general commit themselves to de legitimizing the system that judges them to be failures. rather than admit to themselves that they are the problem, they are obsessed with proving that actually 'society' is the problem. This is why radical anarchists/socialists/communists are almost always losers.

for the same reasons, neets and robots want to prove that getting women is dumb and stupid because they failed at it themselves.

Clearly a ploy to discredit the conspiracy movement but at least its yielded some worthwhile insights. People really can be made to believe anything.

...

Of course the earth isn't perfectly flat, it's more like a dome.

There are plenty of people who are genuinely flat-earthers but none of it has anything to do with interest or investigation about the shape of the earth. They're just people who already believe that everything is an illuminati deception or whatever, 9/11 planes were holograms, Sandy Hook was fake, the govt is spraying mind controlling chemtrails, moon landing was fake, ISS is fake, space is fake blah blah blah. Earth being flat is just another logical step in this worldview.

Sure they come up with all sorts of retarded "evidence" for their claims, but it always comes after they've already committed to this way of seeing the world. Since everything is a lie, earth must really be flat! Literally nobody becomes a flat earther from just considering the evidence at hand.

There are many types of flatties. the most numerous are just trolling, but there are fundie christcucks and new age goons who legitimately are retarded enough to believe it.

The southern hemisphere makes so many problems for flat earth theory that it makes me wonder if there are any flat earthers down there.

>Live in Australia
>Realize you are not actually upside down
>wtf the earth is flat

Where does the moon go if the earth is flat?

Yeah, but you can also just look at the night sky and go "why isn't it moving the way that it should on the flat earth model? and why can't i see the north star?"

atmospheric lenseing and parallax effects make an optical illusion where it looks like the earth is in front of it if it move too far away

Though anything that is sufficiently flat or high would not experience any trouble, like maybe being on the ocean or up a tall tower or in a plane.

it works like this

Top row is what you see happening
Bottom row is what is actually happening, with the red line being the path that the light from the moon is taking through the atmosphere. It curves because of density differences

For most it is an inside joke. But there are a few who actually believe it.

Still doesn't make sense when it comes to being on an airplane.

What am I looking at

The earth is flat if viewed by a 4th dimensional entity.

A bunch of white pixels, with a couple of black pixels mixed in and a few red pixels to add a splash of color

Except you can't reproduce that result with any experiment. It's just made-up shit.

I wish I could take credit for this post, but it's wonderful copy paste that I can at least stand behind (paraphrased for more generic use):

"Flat Earth is an academic social experiment. The concept behind it is to reinforce rationality. The people who are devising those most complicated flat Earth hypotheses are those who understand the necessity for science to not make assumptions on its previous beliefs, but to always be cross-evaluating new information.

"If you come up with a flat or torus Earth that people have to work very hard to disprove, then you're cultivating a scientific mindset in your targets. If you make one that nobody disproves, then you're highlighting the fragility of the assumptions.

"Yes, you can disprove it by just going up into space and seeing for yourself that it's round, but that's not the point. The point is to expose you to your own blind spots.

"You could treat flat Earth model as one that can and should be qualitatively disproven. If you can't do that, then you're adding noise to the discussion.

"It's an important practice because this is a fairly sandboxy, safe case. It's easily verifiable. But we're entering an information age where we're carrying a lot of luggage from times past, and there will inevitably be alternate explanations for things that people will inevitably dismiss (e.g. supervoid coolspot on CMB vs statistical anomaly) and the fact that flat Earth has any traction - even ironic - shows how prone we are to blind bias. Most of the flat Earth posts are juvenile-level trolling, but there are some also that take considerable amounts of effort to evidence against.

"If you consider this trolling then you don't understand science. There are scientific ways to discredit something, and there are social ways to dismiss something that you feel isn't worthy of a response. What you do in that regard says a lot about you."

The moon will have the illusion of rising into the sky and then dropping down, just like I predicted with my light bending theory.

Checkmate.

You can see farther into the distance on an airplane. Round earthers even accept this as true, but claim it's just because you can see more of the sphere. In reality, it's just that the higher you are in the air, the more the sky would need to curve and refract in order for you to see the illusion of the land blocking the sky

>You can see farther into the distance on an airplane.
Fair.
>In reality, it's just that the higher you are in the air, the more the sky would need to curve and refract in order for you to see the illusion of the land blocking the sky
But how do you explain seeing the moon set from 10km up?

Say I am in an airplane directly above the ground based observer. What do I see and now does that work?

>The moon will have the illusion of rising into the sky and then dropping down, just like I predicted with my light bending theory.
The the angle of rise and set changes with the observer's latitude. Someone at either pole would see the Moon going round and round over days, while it gets higher and lower over the course of a month. At the equator, it's straight up and down. In between those latitudes, it's at an angle equal to 90° minus your latitude, on the same night. Your atmosphere paradigm does not explain that.

>Checkmate.
Nice try, but that's not valid until your argument has no counter. That means you have to wait for counter arguments.

While I'm at it, you also have to explain *why* light would bend so curiously, then design an experiment where you can show this to happen, and another experiment t o show how it *couldn't* happen. Then publish a paper explaining your hypothesis, experiment, results, and submit that for peer review.

You haven't even move a pawn yet.

Basically, for some people it's impossible to dispel their delusions. Rationality simply does not work.

It becomes even harder when you've got other people willing to affirm their delusions. So these people get it in their head that the earth is flat. And nothing you can say can convince them otherwise. And then they meet other crazies, along with trolls, roleplayers, and FBI agents willing to continue to affirm that belief.
