Are people who listen to music while studying brainlets?

Personally, I can only concentrate in absolute silence.

>I can only concentrate in absolute silence.
that's because you're a brainlet

Or is it because I am engaging in tasks that require peak levels of concentration whereas you are engaging in child's play?

typical brainlet comeback

Uhhhh, both applicable??

Depends on what I'm doing.

If programming/coding sometimes i like music. If studying concepts - no music. If writing - depends on what I'm writing.

>At Princeton he received complaints for regularly playing extremely loud German march music on his gramophone, which distracted those in neighbouring offices, including Albert Einstein, from their work.[55] Von Neumann did some of his best work in noisy, chaotic environments, and once admonished his wife for preparing a quiet study for him to work in. He never used it, preferring the couple's living room with its television playing loudly.[56]

>loud German march music

extremely patrician

Any intense thinking requires silence, if people like Von Neumann listened to music it was only for creative purpose. Music while studying is for brainlets.

Apparently you can't do two things at a time so it seems like you are the brainlet.

He preferred to work in noise, period. You were proven wrong with a counterexample. Brainlet.

I can only listen to music without lyrics, and something that isn't from any sort of media I'm aware of. (What I mean by this is, I couldn't listen to a video game soundtrack, even if it's amazing).

Typically I listen to Ludovico Einaudi. That man is a legend.

Silence for getting thoughts in, stimulation for getting thoughts out, simple as.

I like to listen to older video game music when studying because it's usually pretty simple and has no lyrics so it works great in the background. I find if I try to do stuff in silence I get distracted more easily but with a bit of background noise its easier to stay on focus.

A little bit of noise is good because it forces you to focus.

where are your citations sweetie?

this a science board

I've conducted an experiment on myself and have confirmed that noise indeed forced me to focus. I'll publish the entire paper on my blog soon.

reduces retention and focus, so yes

Perfect explanation.

Math concepts I want silence.
Coding I want fast electronic shit.

if the coding you're doing doesn't require to think about math concepts, you're doing something wrong

This.
The people saying they listen to music while studying aren't Von Neumanns. They're in community college.

Coding is mostly problem solving, and problem solving is aided by creativity, and creativity is aided by environmental triggers.

I'm not acknowledging your bro science until you give me some citations.

Now about that, you should leave the codemonkeying to the popsci app generation kids and focus on your field's theory and algorithms.

>absolute silence.
Problem is, street noise, elevators etc. forbid that.
Drown out external sounds by playing slow paced non-dramatic classical music, no singing.

I think its mostly to drown out the noise around me or just autism. But, I will always listen to a playlist I have when I start to work.

As autismal the game may be inherently, Minecraft's Alpha and Beta soundtracks are actually a decent listen for studying as well.

Background noise gets me drowsy. I always fall asleep in vehicles listening to engine and wind noises.
So I go for silence or music if I want to focus

That's why I have to plug myself into my ipod. Because otherwise, there are all sorts of tiny irrelevant noises that distract me.

Underrated

The correct answer

I play fast music to increase norepinephrine, and slow music to reduce cortisol.

cope harder brainlet
> not being able to divide your overpowered brain into 2 highly demanding activities at once

I listen to a lot of loli idol jpop while working and studying, and I'm probably smarter than 90% of this board.

I listen to the farts of my goddess while working and studying, and I'm probably smarter than 99% of this board.

i don't think music helps me study and i don't think it would help another person study and i wouldn't be convinced by an "argument" otherwise beause i've experimented heavily with this

>tfw you play Triarii while writing your thesis.

No, it's because you are a brainlet who can't abstract his surroundings and concentrate on what he needs to concentrate on.

Hows your precalc homework?

Thats because you can achieve a state of flow a lot easier than the rest of us. Music can help stimulate the brain while studying to enhance your focus IF you have a hard time doing it in silence

Not necessarily. Music can give rise to dissonance if there's no music you like. It can put you in the wrong state of mind for a given activit. It can be distracting in a number of ways.

Music is very subjective Yes, yes,I know, the music you like is objectively good)

Chances are you don't consentrate to the music, and the music doesn't have anything worthwhile to concentrate on. If you were able to concentrate on both at the same time, why don't you just listen to your study material at the same time? Why don't you read, listen and read in braille at the same time to maximize learning? Yeh, it isn't possible. So it's fairly redundant to listen to music.

People are different user.
Some people like broccoli, some don't. Neither are necessarily brainlets.

Music usually helps me to keep the thought flowing helping to focus, to coding is wonderful it will worn you out much less...

Usually I get worn very quickly if I code without music, it helps to keep in a good mood while doing logical stuff for a long time

To more abstract concepts I prefer some minutes in silence to let it sink in.

i have tinnitus, so i can never have absolute silence. i put some white noise or baroque in the background while I'm studying, and can't do so without it.

It's probably very personal.
Anyway I'm a musician and I would never listen to music while studying, because music is like a language to me.
It would be like studying while someone is whispering in my ears, I'd say something no one would ever do.

I'm also a musician, and I feel the complete opposite of this. I find it difficult to keep focussed without music; it sort of puts me in the zone and stops me from wanting to be distracted.
I find I actually focus more with more interesting melodies, the only detrimental songs or pieces are ones with jarring rhythms.

>he doesn't listen to rite of spring 10 hour full blast
No brainlets allowed

Quite the opposite. If your brains can still function with such noise on, they work fine. If you require total silence to perform a likewise task, then you are the brainlet.

I used to listen to happy hardcore and folk music in my freshmen phys. year. Along the road I switched to late-romantic classical music, if anything at all, unfortunately. 2stupidfordis.jpg

same bro, white noise is a godsend. Or library rooms with a mild level of chatter

>extremely patrician

just say nazi

> requires peak level concentration
What, studying? You are talking about studying like it involves disarming bombs. Normal people can learn science and math stuff with be occasional interruption and distraction, and we can definitely do it while listening to music. You must be a brainlet.

>german marches existed for hundreds of years before
>because nazis coped it now it's a nazi thing

i listen to piano music while listening..but at really low volume, so that I barely can hear it. Rocks

I can only stand music while doing some menial housework and while browsing sometimes.
I dislike music even when playing vidya and stuff like that.
As for studying, I turn on LichessTV and listen to taps, sometimes in breaks comment on players etc.

>fast electronic shit
Dude same, and I totally agree with that it helps prompt new ideas. I've also noticed it helps me to keep implementing ideas instead of staring at the screen.
Also hmu with your beats.

It's for the music I swear

I'll listen to rock and alternative/ a shizton of other genres too, but these are all examples of tracks I'll listen to while programming.

>he can't study with music

are you guys like on spectrum?

Of course people who listen to music while studying are brainlets. This question is answered by asking why they listen to music while studying.

Music is actually good when practicing, if I can do something while not fully concentrating I'm damn sure I can do the same thing even better with full focus. Also the rythm can help with some things.

...

>What I mean by this is, I couldn't listen to a video game soundtrack, even if it's amazing

That's the most normie tier thing ever.

I had to give up music (not that I had much) sometime during high school. I absolutely cannot do any work at all with music. Even in idle downtime, I don't care to listen to music. I really don't know many artists at all, lol. Normalfags can't get on my power level.

this, its distracting

This. I blast Britney Spears on repeat while doing functional analysis.

in my experience, music makes things worse unless you're already on a roll.

I listen to eurobeat or high nrg techno while solving problem or memorizing stuff, while reading stuff I usually just do it in silence. I find the hectic music helps me think of creative solutions to problems.

this

Personally I like to listen to John Cage's 4′33″ when studying. Probably one of the best songs to study to.

>Not listening to music while studying
>Not remembering the topics and concepts by hearing the beats in your head again and having a snapshot of what you studied
Come on, son.

>while studying brainlets
...why would anyone study brainlets??

To better grasp mental retardation and how to fix it

...

I prefer silence as well.
Sometimes music is the next best thing when surrounded by distracting noises.
Sometimes I just put on white noise. To hide a tree, use a forest.

Do you think it harms study?

If you can study, then you aren't a brainlet.

That's what separates the chaff from the wheat.

Don't do it or you'll end up like me, it's so stuck in my head I imagine to hear it everywhere.

I'm pretty normie I guess.
