The rest of the dialogue is a deliberate way to distract one from the question, "what's the third?" which actually refers to the three words and not the words that end in gry.

But then it wouldn't be a miscommunication joke. It's like asking someone to not interrupt during the Interrupting Cow joke.

I meant something like "consider the words that end in "gry". There are only three words in the English language. Angry and Hungry are two. What's the third?"

In this context, "that end in 'gry'" is not left out of the original sentence, so that in retrospect after being told the joke, the sentence would still make sense after extracting the information.
