Is time infinite?

is time infinite?

No, if it was infinite it wouldnt be 2017 because infinite time would still be passing infinetly forever and time wouldnt be able to move forward because there an infinite timeline behind any point on the line.

No, if it was infinite it wouldn't be 2017. If time were infinite any point in time would effectively stretch to infinity on each side like an elastic band. For example, if it were march the third 1983 time would expand so far in each direction around that point that the day would last forever, the entire calendar would be completely out of sync with the seasons.

That only exists in a static model of time. If time is merely a construct used to understand the physical world (which, it is) time has existed forever before us and forever after us. Right now, we use time to measure speeds and displacement of things that are always in motion. Imagine, for a moment, that every atom in the universe froze in place for exactly 2 seconds. If they all resumed after the 2 seconds, in exactly the same manner as when they left off, humans would not be able to detect it or even fathom it ever being possible.

so for all we know there could be blips/waves of time inaction

but what if time stopped for a year so it was actually 2018 but everyone thought it was still 2017?

Then it's 2017, because the human perception of time hasn't occurred.

But it was a year ahead.

Maybe. Time has a beginning that we can determine. Time does not have an end that we can determine. An infinite set can start with zero, so it could be infinite.

I'd also like to mention that these people who say no likely don't understand how to view a system probabilistically.

Did we experience the year?

No it wasn't. What we define as time is the occurrence of events. If events stop occurring, then by our perspective no time has passed, no matter how "long" events stopped occurring (we would have to measure this "length" by a different, external quality because nothing is occurring)

Actually time may have end. If the Big Freeze scenario is correct then when Universe last stars will cool down and last black holes will evaporate then nothing will change, ever. And time is defined as occurence of events.

A simpler answer would be

"so long as energy exists, time exists."

Yeah, I tend to overcomplicate stuff.

It may or may not. Big freeze, or big crunch could result in the end of time or maybe time never had a beginning, but was a result of a previous big freeze or big crunch. So even if those scenarios exist, time could just keep on going.

what is a year?
The rotation of the world over the sun right?
If all matter stopped for an entire "year", then this spam never occurred therefore it is still 2017...

"time" is just a construct to people understand what is going on, "day" "months" "weeks" "hours"
Are just constructs, which objectively donĀ“t make a lot of sense in the space...

If we saw an intelligent human form, our "time" would not be the same as them, we both would perceive time differently

3000 years would not make sense, without some point of commonality, a day an hours would not make sense to them.

Do you understood now?

>Do you understood now?

no.

it could be countably infinite and real analysts can be btfo'd once again

Time is a circle

Time requires matter - or at least bound massless particles. Matter won't be around forever, even if protons don't decay.

Time had a beginning.

Anyway, define 'infinite'.

Only correct answer.
Time does not exist as a thing that does something. To say that time does something would imply that it's a force, which it is not. A change in something is measure by humans using units of measurement, how long it takes doesn't matter as multiple variable can be added to change the the rate of change.
Changing a rate of change doesn't mean you add or subtract more time from whatever you're measuring, it means you add or subtract something of SUBSTANCE to change the outcome.
Correct as well.

when it gets back to 1/1/1970 it goes back to zero

time ends after the last conscious mind is dead.
space time however is different

Maybe. It's infinite until it ends.

I wish I knew

true enough

Infinite isn't real
