I like that there is an outreach program to the public to achieve higher participation in STEM.
I don't know of any better choices for esteemed "science communicators" besides those who are dead, so I'll say he was a good choice. He's an established astrophysicist that is the director of the respected Hayden planetarium.

The guy is a good speaker and science communicator even if it feeds into the emergence of pop-sci culture or "Science!" as I like to call it. However, I think by himself he's not a bad guy and at worst he can come off as intentionally being mystic and pretentious (like with the goldmine that is his twitter). I do hate the dickriders of Neil though, they are awful and worship Neil based off of the fact that he is a black scientist.
