>love reading about math and physics on wikipedia >love watching documentaries and read popsci about science projects/discoveries/experiments/scientists >have tremendous respect for phsyicists and mathematicians >fucking hate calculating stuff >hate solving boring problems (how big is this fictional geometrical body, how fast is this fictional body moving etc) explain this
I want to want to be a mathematician but I really don't enjoy solving problems
Alexander Diaz
You want the glory without the effort.
Alexander Sanders
You like "mindblown" type of shit but you don't actually like science.
Nolan Hall
The purpose of calculating properties of fictional things is to simply practice calculation and become familiar with the process of caalculating. It is your job to figure out why you would ever want to do this. It is your job to decide if there is any personal practicality to it, and whether or not you really want to give a shit.
Ryder Mitchell
You are a popsci junkie, OP. Nothing more.
Angel Ortiz
Typical pseudo-intellect who "like, is really into science and stuff", but only ythe cool parts
John King
to clarify I'm not watching Neil DeGrasse Tyson specials on black holes and thinking i'm a genius who "le loves science", I'm genuinely interested in mathematics. I'm in med school myself so I shouldn't be too much of a brainlet. It's just that I can't fucking get into math myself, although I want to
Robert Young
What the fuck do you want from us?
Adam Jackson
>im not a brainlet i swear >i like math >i dont want to do math why the fuck did you come here to blogpost? go to facebook or some shit.
Ryan Reyes
dude smoke weed lmao I want to have conversations about mathematics like when you talk about movies and trivia it's so interesting lol I don't like doing mathematics though
Brandon Nelson
...
Aaron Carter
How can you talk about math without doing it? It's not like doing science where you have to actually perform an experiment. If you have a conversation about math that isn't just "dude math what's up with that shit" then you are doing math.
Ryan Parker
>I'm genuinely interested in mathematics so start doing it is that so fucking hard?
Carter Torres
it means you're a philosophy major. No hate though, they do some interesting stuff.
Camden Lewis
Well, see, "real" math is all about rigorous proof writing, rather than doing trivial computations. Could be you have no problem with that and just hate the boring, mechanical aspects of computation.
Grayson Rivera
So you like math but you don't like problem solving? I don't know what you think being a mathematician is but it involves quite a bit of problem solving. Maybe it's a certain type of problem solving you don't like in which case fine, there's probably a branch of math for you, but you need to be specific then. It sounds like you want to be a hobbyist though, not really contributing just learning.
Michael Stewart
Don't listen to most comments here, they're just people that look for excuses to feel better than anyone else. Not anyone has to like math/physics in the same way as they do, and it's also a process (what you think about these subjects today is by no mean what you might think of them tomorrow). While it's true that if you don't like proofs and problem solving there isn't much to do in these fields, but I think that over time you'll start getting more and more into it (if you keep reading and exploring your interests). If you really like it, over time you'll want to experience the process of "doing" math and physics yourself, rather than just reading about it. If that doesn't happen, you shouldn't feel bad - not anyone has to be a head-on math and physics expert to be an enthusiast - you can still enjoy these things the way you do now. I seriously hate how everyone here is completely - "hur dur you have to be a real scientist to like science, you're only a meme pop-sci fan". People can have hobbies, science isn't different.
Oliver Reyes
You should try setting a concrete goal for your mathematical study. Something like "I want to understand the proof of the hairy ball theorem" or "I want to be able to prove that you can't trisect an angle with compass and straight edge" would be good mid- to long-term goals depending on what you know now. That way what you're doing will feel more meaningful.
If you still find math to be boring, then either you just really don't like math or med school is interfering with your ability to enjoy any academic pursuit.
Josiah Long

This is what watching too much pornography does to your brain. You get stuck in the spectator's mindset, seeking passive gratification rather than active gratification.

It's okay user ignore the meanies
I understand what you mean. I personally don't enjoy solving long multi page computational problems or doing proofs that much because it's a lot of effort and I'm a busy guy who works a lot, but I love math and science
I always took the hardest classes in school but now that I'm out of school the sort of "force" pushing me to do math to get a good grade is gone so I can't be asked to do problems anymore, but I still study math and am currently setting up to try and do a math bachelor's for fun, without the proofs or problem sets but only with the conceptual understandings of the mathematical concepts
I personally prefer knowing the concepts and understanding the proofs rather than doing the calculations and creating my own proofs.
I suggest reading math textbooks until you understand the concepts fully and enough to know when this would be useful rather than doing full problem sets. You're a busy guy with your medical school apparently from comments so don't worry, we all have our time priorities elsewhere in life sometimes
Enjoy user don't let anyone bring you down for having a casual appreciation of math. It seems like Veeky Forums hates "casual" math lovers even more than "math haters" and it's annoying
Elijah White

>I personally prefer knowing the concepts and understanding the proofs rather than doing the calculations and creating my own proofs. If you don't do the proofs, you won't understand the concepts. There's no way around this.
Kevin Miller
Because those sorts of people don't love maths, they love themselves. They want to feel smart without actually doing the work.
Charles Watson
You can read the existing proofs and understand the concepts. You can also read a problem, understand whether you would be able to do it if you wanted to, then move on without wasting time actually writing it down on paper. It's not hard.
Chase Miller
Another meme. The internet is raising a generation of kids that speak only in memes.
Mason Reed
Proofs are when math becomes interesting. Just analyze the "why" and then even the most elementary mathematics becomes fascinating.
Parker Reed
>kids >is an adult Whoa, such a deep par! Try harder, newfag.
Kayden Edwards
Trust me, you won't learn anything doing that. Many, many undergrads have made that mistake before you.
Julian Flores
It sounds like you dislike computation rather than problem solving. Maybe look into a real analysis or abstract algebra book and try doing some proofs.
Tyler Gomez
OP is confirmed fedora pop-scientists Only seeks out science stuff to feel like he is a part of the group, without ever having to do any of the work or giving a shit about the actual nature of the stuff. OP is a fag.

Andrew Walker
If Veeky Forums's reaction deters you, you dont care enough to begin with. Therefore, to reiterate:
FUCK YOU AND FUCK OFF

There's a difference between solving problems and making calculations. There's a really big difference.
One requires insight and the other is a mechanical task.
Jose Martinez
yes, but the guy is also a lazy faggot, anybody can read the latest popsci facts etc etc

Trust me this isn't Veeky Forums as I know it to be. This is Neo-Veeky Forums which is /pol/'s infiltration populous dominating this once great slow board. Veeky Forums was never political, EVER. Now every thread is shitted on something political. Everybody is suppose to lurk on here, not post. Old Veeky Forums with all the other boards on Veeky Forums left to different forums, or left entirely. Veeky Forums is dead--ran by Facebook, twitter and tumblr. I come here to cry every once in a while. The quality of content nosedived into oblivion. There used to be geniuses here posting and lurking, but shitposters scared them away.
