It's not to give people special privileges, it's to take away the special privileges some people already have because we assume everyone is equal and spend huge amounts of money to adjust the reality that people aren't.

Preference does not mean the school is going to be majority minority, you doof. It means that the entrance requirements are shifted to increase the proportion of said minorities above their normal acceptance rates. I'm not even white. It effectively works that way for many, many schools. Especially medical schools where you have B students being accepted because they happened to be the right color. Students who end up dropping out almost immediately anyway.
Who does this help? Why use this massive amount of resources on people who won't be able to provide returns? I can understand funding poor people based on merit, but I will never understand creating some system where merit becomes secondary because people need to fill up their minority collection.
