Python

Any recommended resources for learning Python (ideally free and online)? I originally posted this in /adv but didn't get any real responses. I'm applying for PhDs beginning next October and it would be useful for me to familiarise myself with some scientific programming.

Other urls found in this thread:

scipy-lectures.org/intro/
biopython.org/DIST/docs/tutorial/Tutorial.pdf
imperial.ac.uk/wellcome-bioinformatics-phd/

greenteapress.com/wp/think-python-2e/

read the docs. they are better than most books.

Bump because same problem as OP.

Is Stackskills any good?

Look up codecademy first, its a very easy way to get started. Then go here scipy-lectures.org/intro/

Do the exercises! Don't just read them

Will check that out, thanks!

this. also maybe read other peoples code, it helps a lot. you could do a project.

Depending what you getting your PhD in python might be a bit slow.

Good python book for medical automation and math:
biopython.org/DIST/docs/tutorial/Tutorial.pdf

Computational physics by Mark Newman. The first 5 chapters are available for free on his website and they're an amazing introduction. Do the exercises!

That seems interesting. An example of the PhDs im applying for where it would be relevant is this one
imperial.ac.uk/wellcome-bioinformatics-phd/
literally says part of the training stuff involves learning some python and the other phds im looking at mostly involve learning some programming.

maybe try back on reddit instead of Veeky Forums

If you want to learn high performance python

ianozsvald.com/HighPerformancePythonfromTrainingatEuroPython2011_v0.2.pdf

...

Just do C++ instead. It's hard but its drastic improvement in performance is well worth it over wasting your time in p*thon

>using cpp scientifically
Absolutely atrocious

>asks for python
>gives compiled languages

Top kek

I can recommend greenteapress.com/wp/think-python-2e/ , OP.

>compiled languages
>he doesn't even know what C# is
OP should just go ask /g/

Nice one, thanks

Damn was gonna do a MSc Bioinformatics at Imperial

>implying c# isn't a compiled language.
The more you talk the dumber we become

If you're applying for PhD programs and you haven't already learned python then it's too late for you.

Yeah seems really decent, get like £27k a year in stipend money and fees paid for too! Unfortunately there are only 5 places on that PhD programme per year :(

Spyder IDE is great
