Blowing up is just one of the many 50/50 things that could go wrong. Either this thing will work or it won't. Total destruction is the worst outcome. Also, rockets have been known to explode randomly.

Because even though rocketry is pretty well understood, combining expensive equipment with a tube full of pressurized explosives that have to be kept just so or else they go boom still leads to nervousness (and of course sometimes people make mistakes or some part fails and the rocket goes kaboom)
