>none of my passions make economic sense >can't get a job in history, literature, philosophy >even then, probably spend most of it begging for funding or living hand to mouth. >writing essays won't help my CV when I apply for retail
I'm not saying I disagree with capitalism, this is just a personal feel. Anyone feel this feel?
Austin Bennett
>wishes he could be paid to do his hobbies
Yes obviously everyone feels that way.
Blake Foster
I feel like my parents and teachers got me real good by telling me over and over again how important it is to "find a job that you like" when I was young and impressionable
Now that I'm studying something that I don't care about at all because it pays I keep thinking in the back of my head how the option to not do that exists when, in reality, it probably really doesn't
It would be easier to cope with hating my job like everyone else if they didn't do me like that, even if they just meant well and wanted to keep me from ending up where they did
Sebastian Rivera
Yeah I guess. My father got his masters in comparative literature from Berkeley and ended up working at the post office. He was always very clear that I should be pragmatic about my education.

I don't get why the economic system matters. Even in socialism your passion for history or philosophy would be equally worthless. It wouldn't suddenly add more value to the system.
Elijah Hall
I'm on the hating capitalism train too, brother. Thinking I might learn to keep chickens and a garden to prepare for the inevitable collapse.
Oliver Cruz
the fall of capitalism will be swift and without mercy
Asher Lee
>Even in socialism your passion for history or philosophy would be equally worthless.
that is...actually true
Robert Hill
When you spend multiple years on here, you realize that this particular website is primarily filled with teenage nihilists, as cruel nihilism has always been the meme thought here as early as I can recall (2006) so if you have even a modicum of talent these days there is a good chance you can get something printed and make an income. If you lack the vernacular or capability to write then you were never destined for those careers anyways.
James Gutierrez

sometimes i just wanna live at a comfy countryside where i tend to a farm at the morning and do my reading and writing at the evening
Charles Turner
We all want this user
Christian Hernandez
farming isn't nearly as glamorous as it sounds. its hard fucking work. gotta clear the fields. till the soil. plant every goddamn crop. water them all the time. and if a bad storm wipes out your crops you are fucked for the entire year
and dont even get me started on animals. have fun scooping up shit every day
Christian Torres
>trying to blame it on capitalism God damn you are stupid, capitalism is a godsent if you want to have a good comfy life. You just have an idea and start a business. I started a national (not usa) nutella clone production when I ended highschool 5 years ago and make over 750k a year now while visiting my production line thrice every week for a few hours.
Btw I was born into a rather poor family, but worked and saved my entire teen years so I had enough to start the company when I wad 19. My family did help me with around 20k (all they had) though.
Just start a business already.
Asher Rodriguez
Why else would most philosophers and academics advocate for socialism or Marxism? It's because their professions have no real value.
Jack Ward
Well being a lucky bastard isn't a fate endowed to all of us user, plus starting a business in America isn't easy. We'd rather starve writing our magnum opus anyway, thats the type of aspiration an artist has.
How middle class are you? Christ this board is in the shitter.
Isaiah Perry
Have you ever farmed a day in your life?
Ethan Flores
I've seen you post about your goddamned nutella clone at least 5 times on Veeky Forums and you've never once managed to make it sound interesting.
also >born into rather poor family >who gave me 20K
Benjamin Campbell
Actually value is drawn away from society when people are not working explicitly to grow and perpetuate it. Being a wageslave is just as bad (if not worse) for society than spending your days philosophisizing. The money gets funneled to the top in are technocrat post-industrial society and the classes become so far separated that we will soon enter into a type of neo-feudalism, where people barely get by on either government provided amenities; or they're pressed into labor by large corporations. Theres no way out; unless we (of Veeky Forums) decide to form a secret commune on an uninhabited island or something.
Connor Edwards
>money gets funneled to top >people so poor they're forced into slavery by "large corporations" >who evidently have no one to sell their product to

Brandon Roberts
You're out of touch. Actual poor people don't have 20K to give to their little ghetto nutella scholar.

Kinda astounded that they'd give their 19 year old their life savings
Aaron Young
I fed myself since Im 12 working almost full time everyday after my classes. My family isnt rich and lived a very modest life. They saved up as much as they could + interest so that I could go to an university without having to work part time. I'm not out of touch.
95% of "actual" poor people dont want to work, are consumerisn, or brainlets.
Xavier Hughes
>muh capitalism Shut the fuck up. Even if you have a full time job, you still have far more leisure time then past peoples. Pick up a skill, use it to provide for yourself, stop spending your leisure time on Netflix/smartphone/stupid shit and instead spend it on what you're passionate about.
Anthony Mitchell
I do this though (apart from now)
Bentley Lopez
Capitalism is as shit as every other state-sponsored system. The difference in the average person's amount of leisure time has to do with technology, not economics. >b-b-but capitalism and the free market spur scientific innovation! Yea, because it was the "free market" that paid for the development of nuclear fission and rockets that could reach space outside the realm of theory. This should not be read as a defense of the state; it's further evidence that the "free market" can only exist when the state protects and taxes "private property."
The most marketable "innovations" are things like a better algorithm to determine what a facebook user will buy using "likes."
James Martinez
patricians like us aren't supposed to be involved in the economy, the philistines should be taxed and their money should be given for us to

Honeslty, most of you Veeky Forumsiots are just not creative regarding employment and working.
>I enjoy reading/writing but I won't work in law, government, advertising, publishing, marketing, film, education. I also won't work in a communications capacity for technical firms. I also WON'T start a buisness that assists STEMweenies with writing patents or grants.
Can you please get your shit together, there are so many things you can do.

To the people hating on capitalists in this thread: how exactly would switching to another economic system actually make OP's passion for history or philosophy any more valuable or worthwhile?
Caleb Green
>20k lifesavings
Come on, dude. I'm 24 and I have more than that already. You just gotta work smart.
Ethan Rivera
Yes. Main directions are finance, management and IT. It's also easy to complement by nearly any grad program and your undergrad studies will still be massively useful. The only quirk is that it is rather unforgiving to brainlets, so if you are one you shouldn't waste your time, cause you'll just drop out in a year or end up with an abysmal GPA.
Charles Hall
Wouldnt having a family make it harder to save money?
