Not so long ago in a similar thread someone posted a link to the tumblr account of some webcomic artist who had written a few short pieces on Veeky Forums that were actually pretty insightful. Not surprisingly, the author had made an honest effort to engage with the site's culture. Wish I could remember the name of his account.

Socialism isn't the same thing as a welfare state. Workers have never owned the means of production on a large scale. The closest thing to true socialism is a cooperative.

Communism is diffuse enough for Bolshevism's wild "success" to mean nothing to the majority, just as it is for the whole of socialism.

Remember Communism isn't even necessarily Marxist.

Because the establishment of a welfare state is part of the Social Democratic Movement which has socialistic tendencies in it's reconciliation of democratic liberalism with socialism more broadly. Saying that true socialism won't be achieved until there's an absolute dictatorship of the proletariat is a reductionist definition.

Perhaps, but that requires a level of nuanced understanding that would be over the head and therefore besides the point in trying to argue with someone who would make such a puerile statement to begin with.

We're talking about whether socialism has been tried. Whether social democracy is socialist or not is pretty important to that conversation. So is rigour.

I disagree. I think he was trying to make the very familiar argument against communism, that whenever it has been tried, it hasn't turned out well, and was therefore conflating communism with socialism, which is very common in the United States.
btw, are you an American? it would probably clear up this whole argument pretty quick if you aren't
