The reason mathematicians tend to hide theorems is that they think the idea could lead to a proof of something more important and they don't want anyone else stealing it in hopes that eventually they will find some amazing application of it and then publish a more important paper. This is especially the case for very famous people like Newton and Gauss (who also hid many theorems) who are already doing so much work they don't need to publish minor results so they just keep them in hopes that they are the key to something bigger later.

As for why he then felt angry when some minor mathematician actually published the result was maybe because he felt he was stolen the chance to prove another great theorem as now everyone will know the new technique and given that he was autistic obviously he would not know how to properly respond to this.
