I think it's bullshit but I some dudes say it works.

Getting steady pussy probably works just as well.

Wouldn’t mindfulness help you get pussy?

it just works

the people who need to meditate are too stupid and "busy" to do it

the people who do meditate probably don't need to do it and already have decent mental stability and awareness

>Getting steady pussy probably works just as well.

I keep forgetting that permavirgins actually worship the vagina, this mysterious, endlessly remote, gape-mouthed, all-healing entity...

Here you go.

lol

What does meditation do though? My friend keep saying "awareness of the awareness itself". Is this accurate?

gay

There are, broadly speaking, two types (with many variations):

Mindfulness meditation, wherein you study the contents of your own mind and, in many versions, practice not reacting to thoughts and sensations.

Concentration meditation, wherein you attempt to focus your consciousness to a single point.

It takes a long time to become good at meditation.

Meditation is just clearing your mind and focusing on nothing, preferably while depriving your senses. All it does is clear your mind. I once hallucinated while meditating, was weird.

That's one type of meditation.

Acutely, you are entering into altered states of consciousness. Chronically, you are improving your ability to clearly perceive what is going on in your own mind and your ability to control said mind.

Meditation is a big old meme. Literally useless, except as a way for new agers to feel superior without doing anything.

>controlling my own consciousness is a meme

Imagine being this stupid

Not to drag the conversation too far afield, but for me the separation between Catholic thought and Buddhist thought is a leap rather than a chasm. There are days where I still nurse the suspicion that Christ may have been another transformation body of Shakyamuni. So much of the Gospel seems reflected in the dharma. It is challenging at times to peer into my own assumptions and to see where I have allowed too much cross pollination between my experiences of either faith.

Jesus was doing something for all those years before he started preaching, right? He was meditating in the desert

>meme buzzwords are a meme
Yes. Go control your consciousness somewhere else.

It's pretty fuckin pointless. It lets you think about your day and calm down. Just like a self-conscious form of controlling your mind.

This is one topic where /x/ would probably be more helpful.

Buddhist philosophy assumes that all the products of the unconscious are illusions that should be eradicated by the practice of meditation

In fact, these symbols are what's connecting us with our deeper self, with the rest of the world, with our history, and our destiny. Even if these things can be painful or confusing at times, when listened to, they're what stimulates our self growth, giving our life the sense of fulfilment and meaning

Buddhism is contrary to the hundreds of years of the religious and secular western tradition, in the end arresting your personal development, just because these pussies can't stand the pain of living, and choose desensitization

It's truly awful.

You don't have to be Buddhist to meditate. People in the Western traditions have been meditating forever as well.

I'm not going to comment on your Buddhism stuff. I've never been attracted to Buddhism myself and don't know very much of its philosophy. Suffice it to say though, if someone is trying to eradicate the products of their unconscious mind they're doing a form of meditation very different than I've ever heard of.

This sort of reminds me of Nietzsche's critique of Buddhism btw

youtube.com/watch?v=c6Avs5iwACs

Utter tripe. Secular western tradition and eastern philosophy run hand in hand when you know what you're looking at. Buddha nature and 'Christ consciousness' are one in the same--aka nonduality. You make it seem like buddhism is some ceremonial form of suppressing selfhood, but from their view it's actually removing the things that obscure the deeper self. Think about it this way--you had no thoughts or subconscious symbols as a baby. So were you not connected to your deeper self then? I'd posit that you were actually closer to it then than you are now, precisely because of the discursive, discriminatory, subconscious mind which sorts things into like and dislike / desire and aversion. Those facets of the human experience aren't some divine aspect of mind, it's entirely conditioned. When I have a strong aversion response to approaching a girl, it doesn't mean God is guiding me to some other purpose, it's because I got rejected in middle school and the conditioning that resulted from that has carried on to my present experience.

That's the exact opposite of buddhism, bro. It's not about desensitization, it's about resensitization, learning to experience life fully and presently.
Part of some kinds of meditation requires you to sort of shut out or pay less attention to some stimuli, e.g vision (closed eyes) so that you can pay more attention to what's going on in your mind. It's like shooting a gun. You don't need to pay attention to everything else around you, it's just you, your breathing and heart beat, the gun and the target. You need focus in order to complete the task of removing all the illusions/delusions in place in the mind.

At least, that's what it says in the meditation book I've been reading. But there's only one way to truly find out if there's truth to it, which is to test it for myself.

Buddhism:
All is suffering.
Alleviate suffering.
Now go...do.

I've read some studies saying it works on many levels. None of which are nearly as exagerated as yogis would like you to believe, as you can certainly still be a cunt and be an expert at meditating.

>tfw ket moose never shuts up

It definitely works on many levels, doesn't take a study to see that. However neuroscience has been totally enamored with pleb-level mindfulness practices for quite some time and have yet to really tackle the full range of what meditation can do. Check out the book 'The Mind Illuminated' by John Yates, it's pretty comprehensive and outlines the full arc and development of concentration & insight meditation

Expiring without exhalation for a few moments, then rapid exhale will compress the vagus nerve, slow down your heart rate and make you feel calm for a few moments; a parasympathetic "high".
Probably works better than the yoga meme

yeah people think meditation is almost exclusively what you just described, pleb level mindfulness meditation for ten or twenty minutes at a time.

it gets much, much deeper than that.

Jesus was just a hippy like the Buddha. They both followed the Golden Rule. It's pretty simple and anyone with empathy "gets it", those guys just put it into practice 24/7 (though even Jesus flipped his shit at least once),

one good example is thich quang duc, who was able to control his own body ( and thus mind ) perfectly while burning to death. if meditation can allow you to do that, I'm pretty sure it has some real-world applications besides chilling out when you're stressed

nvm though fellow autists, meditation is clearly a meme. better go do some more math problems and cry into your pillows later instead of learning to control and understand your mind

>Getting pussy
Dude, gross.

I don't think you realize how stupid you sound.

One guy burning himself (and inspiring numerous copycats) is probably not a great defense of the mental heights meditation can offer. Besides that's surface-level control of reacting to sensations (you cannot vouch for the contents of his mind, maybe he was aware of every horrifying second and just chose not to react. If so he still suffered.)

I't helps you control your consciousness, Veeky Forums has a sizable amount of normies who dont meditate and are most likely married/accept usedgoods, ignore them. My tips are: meditate in a cold shower (helps you not fall asleep), do this for 3 weeks 2 hours each day. After this, you'll literally have mind superpowers, you can learn programming/advance mathematics/whatever in a short amount of time because of your increased grey matter. Depression will also be guaranteed to disappear.

i forgot, the shower must be really cold. It's fine if you dont want to meditate in a shower, but it will take 6 - 8 weeks to reproduce the same effects

you expect me to mediate for two hours a day in a fucking cold shower? go fuck yourself... seriously

...

No, most of all minds are autopilot unconsciousness. No, he just had discipline due to his lifestyle and was able to ignore the pain. Of course, you can do exactly what he did with some drugs...it has nothing to do with what meditation tries to get at. It was simply a highly-disciplined monk burning himself. Discipline doesn't mean control or understanding.

>this mysterious, endlessly remote, gape-mouthed, all-healing entity...

Put that description in your novel. Brilliant

Meditation has shown efficacy in a whole bunch of studies. It is not just some voodoo meme like cupping or acupuncture.

Busting raw inside a woman is the closest I have come to enlightenment.

I get that. I meant that there is a large collection of esoteric texts which have their own techniques and teachings. I doubt many here have the same depth of knowledge on these topics as someone on /x/ would. There are a lot of idiots on that board but some people are really well-versed in eastern and western systems of meditation. When done properly these practices go beyond being form of relaxation to an entirely different state of mind.

>hurr durrr i want to rewire the most complex organ of nature in a few minutes

Is this a joke?

>meme meme meme meme meme
Totally convinced me bro, all those studies are wrong, you're right meditation SUCKS DICK

no its not. Try it yourself before complaining retard.

ok sparky

We can vouch for at least some of the contents of his mind. If you're able to control you're body while burning, you're exercising great mental control as well.

I'm sure he was suffering, or at least was aware of the pain to some degree. That just makes it more impressive. I fail to see how a level of physical and mental control most people would consider superhuman is not a good defense of some of the more obscure potentials of meditation.

What form of meditation would you recommend for this, user?

I don't know about you, but I have actual shit to do. I don't have time to sit under a fucking shower for 2 hours.

People shouldn't begin by meditating for two hours at a time, that's a shit idea

If you need the shower to stay away, you aren't meditating to begin with

Go contemplate why you shitpost so much under a burning hot shower

Whenever I read these threads I wonder how burgericans can be more ignorant. Then I stop, clear my subconciousness.

Damn are Americans dumb as shit.

>also this many religious fagnatics

Also on
>meditating is a meme
there are people right now that are immune to pain, have a focus like laserbeams and can actively control their immune system as results of meditation and the like.

How can you optimally use your brain if you can't control your thoughts?

This is what mediation allows

The moment you're dependent on a moisthole for happiness or a fulfilling life you're never going to achieve it.

>t. virgin

Look who is talking.
Lets be honest here, everytime I have sex I can't help but feel disapointed. Sure it isn't bad, but it's seriously overhyped.
The first time I had sex all I could think about was how mediocre it was, the ego boost I got from it felt better than the sex itself.
It's simply not worth the effort and emotional taxation of having to deal with women.

But feel free to keep on worshipping the church of pussy for those short injections of "happiness". I'm sure your angels wont ever cheat, break your trust ever or nag ever.

The Four Noble Truths
1Life is suffering
2This suffering is caused by desire
3This desire creates a longing and attatchment
4You will be reborn over and over again, coming back to this horrible world of sickness and confusion, the state of which you return is determined by your conduct, (im a deformed manlet this time around) and you can escape this SAMSARA by following the 8fold path witch includes MEDITATION, but is mostly about detatching yourself from the precieved pleasures of life to achieve NIRVANA, which is really ETERNAL OBLIVION which athiests believe they attain regardless of their conduct on earth.

top fucking kek

Solved :
Kys in every life until you hit the jackpot

so let go so you can never exist again or what?

>all those studies
They're crap.

"Many uncertainties surround the practice of meditation. Scientific research on meditation practices does not appear to have a common theoretical perspective and is characterized by poor methodological quality. Firm conclusions on the effects of meditation practices in healthcare cannot be drawn based on the available evidence. Future research on
meditation practices must be more rigorous in the design and execution of studies and in the analysis and reporting of results."

Yeh I am gonna need a TL;DR for this whole thread.

Just gonna leave this here

we don't know

Nasty nuts! EW EW EW! :^(

lol this is like when a porn star claims that she's a "meta art performer"

really? I bust in my gf every night and past the few seconds the orgasm lasts it's nothing very special.
Cuddling gives a lower but steadily oxitocin profile though, i'm addicted to that shit.

There a case study of a Tennis player using meditation or rather self hypnosis during recovery from a surgery. He wasn't able to leave his bed, but with the power of his mind he was able to keep training his muscles. Even while bed ridden his arm muscles showed an increased muscle mass from imagining himself practicing.

If pure thought can make your body grow, why can't it make your mind grow as well?

Are you cut?

Holy crap. Pretty ironic how only brainlets are stupid enough to think making your mind do nothing for hours will somehow make you a genius.

Yes, Nietzche totally didn't understand Buddhism, either.

No.

>Discipline doesn't mean control
What did he mean by this?

wat

Your mind isn't doing nothing, that's impossible. You're focusing on one thing and ridding your mind of all other distractions. It improves focus and self-awareness. It also decreases stress and negative attitude. Maybe you should try it...

I'm kind of afraid to try it. What if it changes my mind significantly? Some buddhists' idea of "bliss" is a complete absence of thoughts. Sounds rather scary desu. Also there's this meditation cult thing...

>Chronically, you are improving your ability to clearly perceive what is going on in your own mind and your ability to control said mind.
Isn't that very tiresome? I''ve bpd and too much introspection is not always good for me.

They should invent a new form of meditation that reduces saltiness.

List is in order from most theoretical to most practical. Practical means using the spirituality actively, theoretical means describing it and laying down the fundamentals. Both of them lead to the Truth.

one who FULLY AWAKENS to ANY of these powerful concepts will change his life and all his future lives and also help us all in transcending limitations.

It won't. It will improve your ability to focus, specifically on things that are external rather than your bodily self.

Thanks dude. I just recently got into this stuff and I'm feeling the happiest I've ever been. The world is truly great.
