I'm not saying you're wrong, but I do see why he isn't gonna release it to the public. He's spent his entire life working on dwarf fortress, imagine putting that much of your effort and soul into something and then opening it up to the public and seeing your life's work getting shit on by random strangers online. I don't think the game will progress much further though, every update since the overhaul has been more flawed than the last. The bugs pile up and the performance is getting unbearable, I think we're starting to see his limitations. At this rate eventually the game will be virtually unplayable from the lack of optimization. I wonder what will happen then. I also wonder if he'll release it on the event he's injured or dies or is otherwise rendered incapable of working on df.

He has expressed no interest in releasing the code in the past. His viewpoint seemed to be that Dwarf Fortress was for him, his hobby. It wasn't for others.

He has stated that if he "dies of natural causes" that the code will be scheduled to be released.

I can see your point, but all things considered, his ego is getting in the way of progress of the game and the community. We are already stuck with a highly complex and yet highly unoptimised game. He is, for multiple reasons, unable to optimize it and yet he keeps on adding more and more to it.
I really believe some sort of a centralized open source project is possible for DF. Something like Linux, maybe, he can get full creative control and godlike veto power like Linus, but at least fucking let experienced programmers and managers help with the poor coding for free.

Again, he can keep full creative control, that's his forte. Let him write code for his ideas and let the autists rewrite that to do the exact same thing, but more efficient.

DF frustrates me to no end precisely because it's a great project bottlenecked by a bad programmer who refuses to acknowledge that or even brags about it ("I don't know anything about parallel programming and I can't be bothered to learn"). Precisely because of that ego he can't provide himself and the community an opportunity to become much bigger and better. In truth, the longer we wait, the longer we'll be way past the "fixing shit" point. We are probably already in the "just rewrite it from scratch using his source as a guide" territories. Even rewriting it completely would be something a decent group of autists could do in maybe half a year.

As for the donations, maybe. Look at lichess for a decent open source example where the main guy draws salary.
As for the forks, that's always a possibility but I don't see why is that bad. "Real" DF will always be more popular by default unless he fucks something up real bad.
