Depression

Is there any scientific reason for depression? Is there a cure?

Hace you tried anime?

Daily exercise and a healthy diet

these two gentlemen know the key to happiness

>reason
It’s a response to nihilism, other times it’s biological
>cure
Antidepressant treatment or cognitive behavioral therapy. Ketamine treatment has been shown to have some efficacy too, but it’s still being researched clinically

So, 5/8, still have a depression and have bad grades in college while being an undergrad with 25 despite learning 4 hours every day.
Sorry, but eating healthy, drinking water and exercise regularly is a fucking meme and doesn't help shit.

Fuck, 4/7, not 5/8.

...

If i had the energy and desire to do all that (except drinking water and sleeping I guess) I wouldn't be actually depressed, would I?

Like I wrote here , it's a normie advice for people who doesn't have depression to begin with, it's for people who feeling "bad", everybody with real depression, like me, will run into false expectations and will fall even deeper into his mental illness because it doesn't help shit.

your mind is weak

fucking normalfags

If all you do is sleep and drink water, your depression will go from psychological to physical, caused by deficiencies of vitamins and blood sugar. Either do something about it or don't. It's your problem, not ours, motherfucker.

Funny thing is that this doesn't work. Happiness is a very cruel and mysterious thing.

t. bitter virgin

neanderthal genes may have contributed it. maybe that's why niggers are always happy.

Depression is just the natural state of a low_T/beta male. Electronic entertainment has allowed men to ignore it, but the only cure is pussy

>Is there any scientific reason for depression?
Negative life events cause the brain to become depressed. I guess if you're miserable for an extended period your brain becomes misserable as its default state.

>Is there a cure?

I've heard magic mushrooms can "reset" the brain for a couple of weeks. Other than that good diet, exercise and a comfortable lifestyle can help.

I was very depressed a few years ago (suicidal 24/7) and now I'm just mildly depressed. I slowly just stopped hating everything. I'm not sure why.

Its not a magic bullet. A good social life is a bigger part of it.

not entirely true. porn and drugs are responsible for most of the depressions that caused by dopamine deficiency. but i have pussy regularly and i am still depressed most of the time.

maybe it's not depression precisely but over procrastination and laziness.

>have bad grades in college while being an undergrad ... despite learning 4 hours every day
Maybe you're depressed because deep down you're realizing you're a brainlet?

Too much serotonin.

just make sure you don't pass it on to the next generation

>response to nihilism

when you get beat down by your problems rather than feeling hyped to fix them, like if you said that a rocket design was shit and pointed out some issues but instead of the designer fixing it and saying thanks for the advice he just cries.

Finally, someone else who knows how to roll a propper joint!

Other way around, I think. Theys why they give you SSRIs with your antidepressants and why candy-kids have suicide tuesday's.

I fulfill 5/7 and think about killing myself daily. The two that I lack and believe to be the most important are "Fulfilling career" and "active romantic and social life".

Depression features ruminating, repeating thoughts such as "I'm hopeless" that one responds to as if they were reality. Mindfulness meditation teaches de-immersion, to be able to experience your thoughts as just mental phenomenon instead of a reality one is immersed in. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy has been shown to be just as effective as medicine for depression and anxiety, and has become very popular in the mental health field for this reason.

If you have depression, The Mindful Way Workbook can be a great help. In addition you may be able to find MBCT groups in your area.

Depression is an intricate interplay between the individual brain and the environment.

It's not something that you can fix by just looking at the brain (which is why SSRI's work so badly), but it's a state of being that is mostly characterised by aimlessness. In other words, the brain environment interaction is badly calibrated, and the things you are doing do not make sense to you or provide you with any dopamine.

Almost all vertebrates can get depressed. It's a state of learnt helplessness. Because you have seen so often that your actions do not result into the required rewards in the environment, over and over again, after a while, you simply stop trying, because you know it is not worth the effort. Many caged animals show similar behavior to depressed human beings.

The unique part of human depression is that it is also strongly linked to our social lives, as we construct a sense of self, based strongly on how others view and treat us. When this view is bad, you think of yourself as bad as well, and try to rationalize why this is the case (rumination, feelings of worthlessness, suicidal tendencies). Together with the observations that other people do show signs of a well calibrated brain-environment interaction, this is extra enforced into tricking the individual brain that for some reason, life is simply not worth it.

As the brain uses a predictive coding algorithm to constantly predict what's coming next, the only thing it is predicting, after so many failures, that there will only be failure next, which keeps the brain from turning thoughts into actions (why carry out an action which is destined to fail). After a while, all the brain does is sit around and feel miserable about itself because its a self enforcing cycle.

Much of these modern depressions are based on expectations. As I said, the brain uses predictive coding to generate consciousness. When expectations have always been high, but reality fails to map neatly onto the previously thought expectations, everything you do, even if its average or above average, feels like failure.

This is exceptionally problematic when you see how kids these days are raised. We can all be the next movie star, president or doctor (even in cases where it is statistically and logically very unlikely that a person from a certain position becomes that, there are limits to the individual's strengths and willpower).

So yeah, you can have 5/9 of the things the other user posted, but still be depressed as fuck.

If your prior expectations were wrong, or nobody socially cares for you, or you just keep failing and failing, you can develop a depressed state of mind.

In other words, its scientifically and medically flawed to view and treat depression the way we currently do. It's not just a brain disease that is treatable by boosting a certain neurotransmitter. It's a systemic misalignment of the individual brain and the environment that can only be resolved by figuring out which parts of the clockwork run out of sync.

It's often a part of it (you can more easily develop these misalignment's when your neurotransmitter profile is messed up due to genetics or undernourishment), but it's definitely not the entire picture.

>It's not just a brain disease that is treatable by boosting a certain neurotransmitter

what if higher levels of a certain neurotransmitter can help you meet your own expectations?

As I said, it could help. Having a dopamine deficiency is not very useful. A good neurotransmitter profile is indeed necessary, but it's not the entire picture. The serotonin hypothesis is extremely flawed and short sighted, primarily aimed to sell as much drugs as possible, while it's life itself that is making you depressed, not a slight chemical imbalance.

Can anyone actually define depression first? It looks to me like any negative symptom can be called a symptom of depression. You're sad all the time? Depression. You have no confidence in yourself? Depression. You have no energy? Depression. You retreat socially? Depression. You can't focus? Depression.

dopamine helps you ignore hopelessness and depression while giving you the focus to do interesting things.

This. While it might not help if you have a serious chemical imbalance or something like that, but youd be surprised how often your "depression" is really a product of shitty lifestyle habits.
Also, whenever I've got a bad case of the blues or just feeling particularly shitty I go to a barber shot and get shave with the hot lather and a straight razor. Hard to not feel like you're king-for-a-day after that, and its only a couple bucks.
