In how the grinch stole christmas the grinch's heart grew 3 sizes.

In this case a size is defined as a grinch heart.

Before the movie his heart was x1 grinch heart in size, at the end of the movie it grew 3 sizes.

Is his heart now x3 as big or x4 as big?

What I mean is.

If it grew to 3 sizes then it increased by x3, if it grew 3 sizes isn't is new size x4 since it was x1 then it added x3 on top of that?

...

quality post.

The official study was unable to accurately measure the heart change. Their equipment broke. Pic related. I suggest you go look into the literature a little more before you start posting more asinine questions.

It grew 3 sizes

So it was one size then it grew 3 sizes so now its 4 times as big.

If it said it grew TO 3 sizes then it would grow 3 times as back

If it was 1 size and grew 1 size, then its final size is 2 sizes so it is 2 times bigger.

Apply the same process to 'grew 3 sizes' and discover that his heart is now 4x as big.

You're assuming that his heart started at the minimum size here, which I do not think is supported by the narrative.

You are assuming that "his heart grew three sizes" means his heart grew "3 grinch sizes". First of all, it could just be some sort of generic heart measurement unit, and the grinch could have easily been a size 0 or size 1/2 heart before the events of the movie/book. Also, increasing in size does not mean that it multiplies evenly. With common things like shoes or hats maybe you measure size in inches or millimeters, but hearts may have size "1" be a moderate size and size "2" just be slightly larger. For example, in karate belt lengths are measured with a traditional method, where size "0" is 80 inches, size "1" is 82 inches, and size "2" is 88 inches etc. Not very orderly.

Furthermore, even if we knew what the proportion of growth was, we do not even know if the size increases reference a single dimension (such as height) or are based on volume. I don't think it's volume because in the film the heart seemed to grow much more than just 4 times in volume.

>In this case a size is defined as a grinch heart.

To 's point, I don't think we know what a heart-size is.

I'm too lazy to do this, but if someone wanted to go to the film and measure the heart's starting and ending sizes (read: widths at the widest edges of its lobes) in terms of screen widths (or area in terms of screen area), then we would be able to subtract initial from final, divide by 3, and find out what a heart-size is.

From there, we could measure the original grinch heart in terms of heart-sizes, and find the actual change.

OP here

It doesn't define what a size is.

youtube.com/watch?v=VOrN2gkhB9A&t=1s

Starts at 19:20 It says: "And the grinchs heart grew 3 sizes that day"

At first the movie showed the initial size. Then it grew in size and paused. Then it grew another size and paused. Then it grew for a third time and broke the machine. Unfortunately after it breaks the machine the size fluctuates a bit so I may not be able to get a precise size on the final size.

In this case why couldn't we assume the grinch's heart is more or less speaking the standard size of a grinch heart. Such that his heart prior to the enlargement x1 grinch heart.

Similarly humans have an average size for their heart correct? Lets be more specific and say a male heart. A standard size for a heart should be x1 male heart (where male heart is the accepted average)

Even if we didn't want to use average, since it isn't defined, can't we just define that a size of 1 is the exact size of the current grinchs heart.

So as to get to: If it grew 3 sizes it gained the size of 3 grinch hearts. Collect like terms and you discouver his heart is 4X as big as it was before when it used to only be X as big.

However the size increase in the movie could just be arbitrary whoville designed sizes for a heart such as is saying.

If he had a heart, it would be 4 sizes. If not, 3x would be acceptable

The Grinch's heart was shrunk to begin with, we're not starting at size 1.

initial size

?
Relative to other grinches the grinchs heart is not shrunk.

I don't think the movie explicitly said he had a shrunken heart, just that he was a grinch.

Heart after the first increase

Heart after the second increase.

He is the only grinch (a "what") so you have to compare him to "whos". They said his heart was three sizes too small to begin with so the Grinch is actually starting at size -2 and ending at size 1.

last frame

much much more than 4 times as big

Whoville needs a better heart size system.

>They said his heart was three sizes too small

Do you have a time citation on that statement?

No, look it up

Does there exist any lore regarding the measurements of the device?

>a size is defined as a grinch heart
Where's this assumption coming from?

>in terms of screen widths
Won't work, if you look. the "camera" zooms in on the Grinch as the equipment breaks. So the size of the heart increases more in terms of screen size than it grows - with the zoom, it would fill more of the screen even if it did not grow.

The correct way to measure this would be to compare the Grinch's heart size at the start and end with the size of his eyebrow - the only bit of Grinch fully on-screen before and after the zoom.

You could maybe use the decorative bit between the stick and the frame of the heart-o-scope, but since the stick bends when the device breaks, it may be moving towards or away from the "camera."

It is also important to note that OP's gif does not show the complete growth sequence. The initial heart is smaller than where it starts in OP's gif.

Vid related, start around 25 seconds in:

youtube.com/watch?v=GKZB7CBddmM

It is stated that, as the story begins, the Grinch's heart is two sizes to small. Pic related is the visual.

That would seem to be pertinent to OP's question.

>"And the grinchs heart grew 3 sizes that day"
It actually says "The Grinch's SMALL heart...[emphasis added]" implying that he suffers from postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome or whatever the Grinch equivalent of that is. We don't even know how severe. By growing 3 sizes bigger it could maybe just be returning to a more normative healthy grinch sized heart.

This is incorrect, it is TWO sizes too small. When it grows THREE sizes, he has MORE than the normal amount of heart, and becomes an exceptionally good... entity.

So the grinches heart would be one size bigger than the standard grinch heart at the end of the movie?

If it was -2 in size of a standard hard and went to size 1 can we determine how much of an increase it was? From this can we determine the sizes grinch hearts?
