not even close

Bullet to the head is the best, or a poisoning if you're a woman or a weakling.

Why did he kill himself? Was there a woman whom he'd lost forever in his youth and could never find her again? WHY?

He went off an antidepressant he'd been on for years in hopes that it'd help him write and it just fucked his shit up instead.

Nothing as romantic as that, meds stopped working.

Not even close. The most Veeky Forums suicide was Pasolini's. I posted this in another thread (boards.Veeky Forums.org/lit/thread/9344416)

He went off his antidepressants because he didn't like the side effects. When he realized he still needed them and started taking them again, he found that they had lost their effectiveness. His wife found him hanging in their garage next to the manuscript of The Pale King he had spent his final moments editing.

Sauce on that? Didn't think so.

Definitely Virginia Woolf. It's hardcore as fuck to fill your pockets with rocks and walk into a river, after writing an extremely moving suicide note to your husband.

He wasn't depressed, that's bullshit. He killed himself because he wanted media exposure. Just like Pasolini, with the difference that Pasolini did it a hundred times better than him.

Yeah my man look at this rascal faking his death XD
Wake UP you silly

The guy hit him in the head. When he was already dead the guy mangled his body with a car. They were in agreement.

Virginia Woolf drowning herself was kind of intense.

This thread has made me realise that I can't think of any writers (or philosophers, artists, musicians, etc.) who committed suicide before the twentieth century. It seems to be a very modern phenomenon. I must be missing some obvious ones here, can anyone enlighten me as to who I'm overlooking? I can only think of Socrates, who doesn't really count.

Socrates' execution was part of his masterplan. Also Seneca when he was exposed as a conspirator against Nero.

Back in my day, not dying -meant- something.

Suicide is a cardinal sin. Fear of God is a powerful thing etc.

Yup. One of the primary reasons it became a sin was so that Roman slaves wouldn't kill themselves.

This is a godly retarded post
1) Socrates didn't commit suicide
2) There's a lot of artists who kill themselves before the 20th century. Just think to the many Romans like Seneca, Lucretius, Cato the Younger, probably even Petronius

>drowning herself
>"kind of" intense

I'd go straight for full adjective in that case.

Are you joking? Cato the Younger has one of the most famous and impressive suicides in all of history. Both roman and eastern history are littered with distinguished suicides. The taboo only came about because of Christ-cuckery.

This, easily

Socrates absolutely committed suicide. He had the option to flee Athens, but he chose to drink the hemlock.

And you call that suicide? It's much more of a death sentence, you brainlet.

Read the Phaedo, brainlet. Socrates embraces death while fully acknowledging that he could choose to live.

Emilio Salgari walked in the middle of the woods while the sun was rising up, sat down and tore his stomach and throat with a razor.

chamfort, kleist, schumann (attempted), adalbert stifter, van gogh. religious taboo only made it less visible.

Pasolini was killed by mafia, user.

>A Carabinieri squad car stopped a speeding Alfa Romeo near Rome. The driver, Giuseppe (Pino) Pelosi, a 17-year-old hustler, tried to run but was arrested for theft of the car, which was Pasolini's. Two hours later, the director's body was discovered. Pasolini was murdered by being run over several times with his own car, dying on 2 November 1975 on the beach at Ostia. Multiple bones had been broken and his testicles crushed by what appeared to be a metal bar. His body had been partially burned, the autopsy report revealed, by gasoline after the point of death. It has long been considered to have been a mafia-style revenge killing, extremely unlikely for one person to have carried out. Pasolini was buried in Casarsa, in his beloved Friuli. Pelosi confessed: Pasolini had picked him up and they ate a meal at a restaurant the director knew, the Biondo Tevere near St Paul's basilica, where he was known. Pino ate spaghetti with oil and garlic, Pasolini drank a beer. At 11.30 pm they drove towards Ostia, where Pasolini "asked something I did not want" – to sodomise the boy with a wooden stick. Pelosi refused, Pasolini struck; Pelosi ran, picked up two pieces of a table, seized the stick and battered Pasolini to death. As he escaped in the car, he ran over what he thought was a bump in the road. "I killed Pasolini", he told his cellmate, and the police. Pelosi was convicted in 1976, with "unknown others".[17][18]
Twenty-nine years later, on 7 May 2005, Pelosi retracted his confession, which he said had been made under the threat of violence to his family. He claimed that three people "with a Southern accent" had committed the murder, insulting Pasolini as a "dirty communist".[19]
Other evidence uncovered in 2005 pointed to Pasolini having been murdered by an extortionist. Testimony by Pasolini's friend Sergio Citti indicated that some of the rolls of film from Salò had been stolen, and that Pasolini had been going to meet with the thieves after a visit to Stockholm, 2 November 1975.[20][21][22][23] Despite the Roman police's reopening of the murder case following Pelosi's statement of May 2005, the judges charged with investigating it determined the new elements insufficient for them to continue the inquiry.

It's not a suicide, shithead. You commit suicide when you have no alternative. That's an act of protest, even if forced by the court of Athen.

Yes as a matter of principle man, if there wasn't a council of men who considered him a threat to society he would have zero inclination to poison himself. What that user said, it hardly constitutes as a suicide, more of a martyrdom, since sticking by your principles and your word actually meant a hell of a lot more than it does today

>if there wasn't a council of men who considered him a threat to society he would have zero inclination to poison himself
this

Did you take that from wikipedia? The sources I've read provide a total different version. Even the smallest details like the restaurant: I knew it was Pomodoro, not the Biondo Tevere. Also, Pasolini's works are full of clues that lead us to believe he had been planning his death for 25 years. Which is far from impossible, since he liked a lot to take advantage from the media exposure (as a form of protest or not) and he was fucking terrified by the idea of being forgotten after his death

Have you found the secret to Pasolini's death, user? Why are they hiding the capital-T Truth? What is their end-game?

He had an alternative. Read the Phaedo.
David Wallace wouldn't have offed himself if his medication had worked. The fact that there are external reasons for a suicide doesn't make it not a suicide.

Nah man, I haven't found anything. I'm just impressed by this version, which is the most convincing out there:
liberoquotidiano.it/news/personaggi/11841119/Pier-Paolo-Pasolini--l-amico.html (sorry if you don't know Italian).
I'm not a fucking conspiracy theorist btw

Suicide is suicide, jackass.

>Read the Phaedo
As if I didn't!

>Wallace wouldn't have offed himself if his medication had worked
LMAO you believe he was depressed! KILL YOURSELF

Right well if you're talking purely technically without disregard to intention and circumstance then sure, that wasn't my angle though.

>he tries to make the ancients reason like the modern do
Next?

I did take that into account. If Socrates had not been given an out, it wouldn't have been suicide. But he was, and his ethical stance led him to choose death regardless.

1) That's why I said he doesn't really count.
2) That's why I said I must be missing obvious ones and asked Veeky Forums to help me out.
Why so aggressive? Are you okay? Did somebody hurt you?

>Did somebody hurt you?
Yeah, the idiocy of this board

Yesenin

What is this Kino meme? Someone care to explain to an autist?

>chamfort
>cool suicide
yeah no

>Cato did not immediately die of the wound; but struggling, fell off the bed, and throwing down a little mathematical table that stood by, made such a noise that the servants, hearing it, cried out. And immediately his son and all his friends came into the chamber, where, seeing him lie weltering in his own blood, great part of his bowels out of his body, but himself still alive and able to look at them, they all stood in horror. The physician went to him, and would have put in his bowels, which were not pierced, and sewed up the wound; but Cato, recovering himself, and understanding the intention, thrust away the physician, plucked out his own bowels, and tearing open the wound, immediately expired.
>On hearing of his death in Utica, Plutarch wrote that Caesar commented, "Cato, I grudge you your death, as you would have grudged me the preservation of your life."

I think it means when something is better than it has to be.

Like if a dumb action movie turns out to be genuinely great when all it needed to do was entertain mouth breathers with big explosions, or when the plot of a porno is really entertaining when all it needed to do was get person x and person y in a bedroom alone.

he was killed because he was gay. not a suicide you faggot

I always found Woolf's suicide incredibly sad and poetic

killing yourself to state that people are biased towards life

I forgot the link could someone paste it here? Thanks in advance.
