Definition of Mathematics

describe the meaning of "mathematics" as you would for a six year old, without using the words "number", "value", "add", "subtract", "multiply", "divide", or any variations of these words

A study of quantities

...

You have a set of symbols and a set of strict rules for how you can use them. You proceed to see what you can write. English is kind of like this, but its rules aren't as strict.

All math is defined by 2 fundamental objects, "set" and "element", and a single operator, "is an element of"

the study of how an amount interacts with another amount given a variety of defined user operations. this study is used to further mankind's understanding of the universe and its laws.

mathematics is the study of universal properties. if you have 2 oranges and take one away, you're left with one, and this didn't depend on the objects being oranges

Mathematics is an isolation filter.

What makes you think english rules are not as strict?

Because everyone breaks them constantly, and rather than being corrected, a lot of people are celebrated for this

Math is the way we think size (analysis) and structure (algebra)

This

Pretty much the same can be said about math. Think imaginary numbers, noneuclidean geometry, cantor's infinities etc...

Also, no one really breaks the rules of the language in my opinion. Sure, people make typos and use words with unconventional meanings, but the understanding is still here, and no rules are fundamentally broken. It's pretty much the same as making minor mistakes in math papers - it's not what matters. Also, rules are not really that strict considering that over the past several centuries rules changed a lot.

I had a Math Logic professor that was fond of saying "mathematics is the study of mathematical structures"

Yes, and a lot of people actively protest when that happens. Do you realize how long it took for imaginary numbers to become accepted? Significantly less time than new words are in English. Strictness can be seen through the ease of acceptance of new ideas.

*more time. I'm a fucking idiot

Way of experring logic in pure form
