On one hand clearly the blonde guy is winning for the moment, he's on the high ground, he's defending all those women. The artists must be suggesting that this is a good moment.

Even though for the present things are going well we know it's only a matter of time before the Russians win and the blond fellow dies. So it's a sad moment.

Hmm, that's a good observation.

But I think the subtle halo is more evidence of his impending martyrdom than it is suggesting a good ending.

It could but given the context I think it's more likely to signify martyrdom.
